2011-07-30 Thread Alan Pope
More SFD details...

-- Forwarded message --
From:

Subject: [admin] [Feedback] Announcing the launch of SFD Registration
To: ad...@lug.org.uk

Pockey Lam sent a message using the contact form at http://lug.org.uk/contact.

Hi UK Lugs,

This is Pockey from Software Freedom International. I see that there
are so many lugs in UK ;-) and only 5 teams registered so far
(http://softwarefreedomday.org/map) , it would be great if you can
help us to announce the launch of registration to all the lugs in UK.
I prepared an email, please feel free to improve / modify it. Thank
you very much!

Announcement starts:

You must have heard about Software Freedom Day already :-)

If you plan to organize a Software Freedom Day (SFD) event this year,
but haven't registered yet, you should definitely go to register as
soon as possible to get some goodies on or before August 2nd!  SFD
Goodies availability is subject to first come first served basis and
each pack will include 3 t-shirts, 20 stickers, 10 tshirt transfer
labels, 3 dvds, 20 balloons and a 2-meter long banner :-)

Registration is very easy, you just need to :

1) create a wiki page of your event under
wiki.softwarefreedomday.org/2011, and then
2) go to http://www.softwarefreedomday.org/cgi-bin/register.py to
submit your event information.

If you have any issue regarding registration, you may read our howto
on http://wiki.softwarefreedomday.org/CreateYourTeampage or contact us
via email: sfd-discuss(at)sf-day.org or IRC: #sfd @freenode server.

If you wonder what is SFD or how to organize or participate in a SFD
event? Please go to our website on http://www.softwarefreedomday.org
and read our startguide on
http://wiki.softwarefreedomday.org/StartGuide

If you already registered your SFD event, all the best to your event!

Please help us to promote Software Freedom Day by placing a SFD web
banner on your website / blog:
http://wiki.softwarefreedomday.org/Promote and link back to your SFD
event page or softwarefreedomday.org front page. Thank you!

Announcement stops

Look forward to hearing from you!

Regards,
Pockey

Hi Rob
Tuxedu primary would definately be good for a surestart centre - it is
ment to be run live and you will not be able to access the internet or
any files on the computer while you are using it - so you can safely let
small children explore - you might want to load lubuntu or ubuntu as the
main OS for adults with full funtionality and have Tuxedu as the option
for when children use them.

As I said it's still being developed but should be ready fairly soon and
once it is i'll let you know.

We are developing it so that it can be shared and we will also make
documentation we create for tuxedu and for the schools project generally
available for everyone to share - we are hoping it will be a
straightforward way to get children and teachers involved with and
confident about using open source and moving away from completely
windows based systems.

Some years ago I ran a business and my accountant insisted on my using
Sage. I thought it was dreadful. If I were in business now, I would
probably use Gnucash. It is fully configurable. Sage is a bit like
Windows; you have to work the way it wants you to.

* I am using a Learning Platform which is Cloud based so all courses will
run through that but I would want to give access to local resources. I am
trying out ESOL and TEFL courses, English and Maths. The centre will also
act as a facilitator for anyone wanting to hold events Computer based or not
so I will provide conference facilities including IWB.

* Yes I think you are absolutely correct and over the years I have tried to
say to educationists that we are not Microsoft Trainers we are there to
enhance learning by using technology, word processing not Word, Spreadsheet
simulation not Excel skilled people. For me it is about transferable skills
using technology not merely learning Microsoft products.

* Yes I have already sent a request to libertus through the website so I am
waiting to hear what they say.
I am really excited about the prospect of using Ubuntu and Open source
software to support my new venture, I just wish I had the skills to do it
but then in my view learning comes through collaboration and already I have
learned much from ubuntu-UK contributors.

* Thanks for the quick response

Hi

I work for a company that runs Degree and Masters courses online.

We use Ubuntu on our servers and Moodle for our learning management software.

All our software is open source.

Contact me and I will try to help.

Hi Mike,

Welcome to the community!

To clarify things I've asked a bunch of questions below.

Is this computer based training?
What are are the courses in? - i.e. are they Ubuntu related or are
they generic computer courses like "How to use office" or something
more generic?
Courses that have already been written in some specific format or
something yet to be developed?
By "network" I take it you're talking about a training room of
computers with a setup people can just turn up and use?

Heh. Perhaps Microsoft products are in their comfort zone.

By managed system do you mean a system to track student progress?

On this mailing list you'll get community based help. If you're
looking for paid-for help with the project then I'd personally
recommend these people:-

http://libertus.co.uk/

It's run by Alan Bell and Alan Lord (yes, lots of Alans around here)
and they're both on this mailing list.

Cheers,
Al.

[ubuntu-uk] Network support

2011-07-30 Thread Mike Carter
Hi Everyone
I have just started to use Ubuntu recently on a stand alone computer and I
think it is amazing. I am setting up an educational training company and I
have been trying to get some help on setting up the network. The local
people I have asked for help have said I am crazy to want to base my new
business on Ubuntu and are advising using Microsoft products. I do not want
to do this I have made a decision to use Ubuntu and I want to make it work.
Canonical suggested I ask for help through the forum, although I have worked
with computers for a long time I am not a technical person. I want to use
small form factor computers and a server in house. The whole venture depends
on having access to courses and I really need some sort of managed system. I
am willing to be educated in running the system but I will have enough on my
plate setting up and running the business. I am convinced that Ubuntu will
provide the necessary system I need I just need someone to guide me and
check that things work. If any one like a challenge then please get in
contact.
Kind regards
 Mike
