[ubuntu-uk] Ubuntu pre-installed
Hi there . Last week at the local LUG meet, I was talking to a guy who told me about Cougar Extreme: http://www.cougar-extreme.co.uk/ who sell barebones computers. I have been talking to Patrick at Cougar, who tells me they are quite willing to supply pre-installed and to test with Linux and recommend a different motherboard if there are problems. They produce a range of pre-specified builds, but are happy to build to your spec. Sounds good to me. And they are only 20 mins at most from where I live. Any chance someone with write access could add them to the barebones and pre-installed web pages? Kind regards, Barry. -- Barry Drake is a member of the the Ubuntu Advertising team. http://ubuntuadverts.org/ -- ubuntu-uk@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-uk https://wiki.ubuntu.com/UKTeam/

I wonder if it would be possible for Cougar to create a page on their website advertising Ubuntu PCs? I couldn't see one when I looked, but if Cougar could do that, I'm sure it would help them lots more exposure within the Ubuntu community. The first guy I talked to was very garded and said at first that they didn't have any dealings with Linux at all and didn't support it. Then when pressed, he admitted that they had sent out a couple of machines with Ubuntu pre-installed. Then he put me through to Patrick who said they would be delighted to supply pre-installed. I guess they don't want to advertise so that folk come to them and then need support with the OS. They seem really on-the-ball though. The whole concept of pre-installed PCs with Ubuntu is surely that those who would not install for themselves have an avenue to go down to get the OS? Sounds like these folks are great, if you are happy to accept wink wink, nudge nudge but aren't prepared to put it in writing - I think that is worse than not doing it at all. Not impressed, and I'm going to fire off an e-mail to them to tell them so. Sean -- ubuntu-uk@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-uk https://wiki.ubuntu.com/UKTeam/

[ubuntu-uk] Fwd: [lugmaster] Richard Stallman in Birmingham - 6pm August 25th 2011
FYI Begin forwarded message: *From:* Tim Williams t.m.willi...@cs.bham.ac.uk *Date:* 8 August 2011 15:28:11 GMT+01:00 *To:* UK Lugmasters lugmas...@mailman.lug.org.uk *Subject:* *[lugmaster] Richard Stallman in Birmingham - 6pm August 25th 2011* *Reply-To:* UK LUG Masters' private discussion lugmas...@mailman.lug.org.uk Hello all, Richard Stallman will be giving a talk at the University of Birmingham this month. This talk is officially being organised by the School of Computer Science, however, thanks are due to Mez (Birmingham Co-Lugmaster) for arranging the initial contact which has led to this. Thanks are also due to Bob Hendley in Computer Science who has done the work to make this happen. RMS will be talking on Copyright vs Community in the Age of Computer Networks. Abstract: Copyright developed in the age of the printing press, and was designed to fit with the system of centralized copying imposed by the printing press. But the copyright system does not fit well with computer networks, and only draconian punishments can enforce it. The global corporations that profit from copyright are lobbying for draconian punishments, and to increase their copyright powers, while suppressing public access to technology. But if we seriously hope to serve the only legitimate purpose of copyright--to promote progress, for the benefit of the public--then we must make changes in the other direction. The talk will take place in the Haworth Lecture Theatre, University of Birmingham. The Lecture theatre is in building Y2, which is the main School of Chemisty building, it's just down the hill from Computer Science on the right (not to be confused with Chemistry West). Start time is 6pm on 25th August. The talk is open to all and will be followed by the official Birmingham LUG meeting which will take place in the Bratby Bar, Staff House. My apologies for not getting this message out sooner, I hope this doesn't spoil too many holiday plans, but it has taken longer than expected to confirm the arrangements. I talked this through thoroughly with pcspecialist. It was all down to a question of full support. They tried selling a range of equipment with Ubuntu pre-installed, and found that currently, they were not up to giving Ubuntu OS support. A manufacturer is legally obliged to give proper support, and this applies to Cougar, so I fully understand their reluctance - they just don't have Linux aware staff. However, Patrick obviously knows enough to be happy testing and guaranteeing an Ubuntu install - but only if the product is going out to a Linux aware customer like you or me. Perhaps a job opportunity for a linux user? Anyone who is interested could could offer their services as either staff or freelance.
