Re: [ubuntu-uk] Ubuntu - Wrong Direction?
Hi I am one of, seemingly, many users who does not like Unity or Gnome3. If that were the end of the story then I would be looking for another distro too. However, one of the strengths of Ubuntu is its variety of flavours. If you like Gnome 2, take a look at Xubuntu. Xfce is now a lot like Gnome 2, but with less bloat and more common sense applied. Xfce's main shortcoming is that its file manager, Thunar, is a little lacking in advanced functionality, but you can always install Nautilus which works just fine. Re: [ubuntu-uk] Ubuntu - Wrong Direction?
I think you hit the nail on the head there. I mean I don't have a problem with the 6 month schedule but it does mean Unity needs several cycles before it can be considered done. One thing I think is obvious here, we have a great experience with unity but it sounds like some people don't. So there is still plenty of work to be done. I think it's a shame this work couldn't have been done whilst the old Gnome interface was still standard but we're here now so let's make the best of it. I think they needed to move on and change style, we couldn't sit with a 1995 styled OS forever. What should be done is to do away with the six month development cycle, which is far too short for the amount of work needed on Unity. An 8-12 month cycle would have been far better and allowed time for more bug fixes. For me Ubuntu 11.10 is blisteringly fast and is so easy to use on my desktop computer. I regularly have quite a few apps open at a time and the icon layout on the Launcher bar things so much easier to find. Mint 12 worked fine in Virtualbox, however lagged really badly as a full system install. I've never been a fan of Mint, but hey at least I can say I've tried it. Re: [ubuntu-uk] Ubuntu - Wrong Direction?
I certainly do not wish to partake in a flame war. People are naturally conservative. Take for example how long it took for Lubuntu to gain adoption. If you are unhappy with Unity, then try any of the other flavours of Ubuntu. I have to disclose an interest in Lubuntu as I've been with it and helping since 9.10. I echo the words about Unity, getting a new build is no mean feat!. Regards, Phill. On Fri, Dec 2, 2011 at 12:03 AM, Gareth France wrote: > I don't think it's going in the wrong direction, no. Re: [ubuntu-uk] webcam for ubuntu
I had one like that a couple of years ago, it was cheap Chinese junk that broke within a few uses. The microphone had rubbish sound quality and the resolution was more like 0.5Megapixels. Look for a webcam that uses a UVC driver as that works straight away in Linux. I've tried a couple of Logitech webcams and they've worked absolutely fine. Re: [ubuntu-uk] Ubuntu - Wrong Direction?
I don't think it's going in the wrong direction, no. Firstly bare in mind that old Gnome is dead, whatever they chose to do the problem of a buggy, new interface would be there. You said it yourself, mint is so great but MSGE regularly crashes, so they aren't doing any better are they? Yes you have to be open to Unity and take time to adjust to it but I've been getting along just fine with it. There are some things I'm hoping they will change but for the most part it's all good. I'm not seeing the system being unresponsive or any memory leaks at all. The distrowatch figures are meaningless, they only show how many people are taking an interest in the distrowatch pages. I am already a Ubuntu user, I already know where to get Ubuntu, so why would I look at the Ubuntu page on distrowatch? Besides Ubuntu is back on the up, over the last week and a half the figures have been steadily climbing back to their old selves. Take into account the surge caused by Mint's new version release this week and it won't be long before all is back to normal again. All this referring to distrowatch figures as proof of a decline is scaremongering. Just remember Unity was built in 6 months and has only had a further 6 to mature. All things considered it's a miracle they built a working product in that time at all! I'm sure once it's finished cooking Unity will be fantastic. [ubuntu-uk] Ubuntu - Wrong Direction?
Is Ubuntu going in the wrong direction? For starters, it seems as though hordes of users - including myself have switched over to Linux Mint and Arch in some cases. I've been using Ubuntu since Hardy and am sad to leave it go, but the last two versions have been buggy beyond belief, and furthermore Unity is for tablets and Netbooks, not Desktops and laptops. The attitude of Canonical is so poor - so many users have been saying what they want; they've ignored, and Linux Mint has filled the hole. Mint 11 was perfect; Mint 12, I'm not liking Gnome 3 MSGE, regularly crashes, but they're supporting MATE - which is the future as far as I am concerned, along with the old Gnome 2.x as well. Ubuntu just lags and lags and is so irresponsive. The memory leaks so badly lately - which was the reason I made the Mint switchover that so many are doing. Not trying to start a flame war, but I loved the OLD Ubuntu, now that Ubuntu is Mint. Ditch Unity, change the attitude and we're onto a winner again. Is this a sneek peek of Win8, supposedly 'tablet/mobile and desktop', in a way I kinda hope so ;) - at least Windows will be gone. Seriously, you only have to look at DistroWatch to count down the days before Mint overtakes its base, as Ubuntu did with Debian. -- -- ubuntu-uk@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-uk https://wiki.ubuntu.com/UKTeam/

Re: [ubuntu-uk] Printer Authentication
I have not resolved my problem, can anyone tell me why I should need an authentication password to print anything ? I have not been able to find reference to the issue anywhere.Michael From: michae...@hotmail.co.uk To: ubuntu-uk@lists.ubuntu.com Date: Wed, 30 Nov 2011 21:53:35 + Subject: Re: [ubuntu-uk] Printer Authentification Thanks Neil, the authentication demand seemed to appear after an Ubuntu update. Mine is not a networked printer, I have, again, searched the internet for help, all seems to relate to network printers. Nothing found in cups help, so I am still trying to remove the authentication requirement which appears after requesting any document print request.
