[ubuntu-uk] copying data from one PC to another PC

2012-05-19 Thread Norman Silverstone
This is probably elementary but it is the first time I have ever needed
to do this. A new machine has been set up with Evolution and I want to
transfer those files containing the data to do with my emails such as
old mail received and sent. Also, I would like to transfer the bookmarks
and, I suppose, cookies for Firefox.

Which files would I need to copy and what is the simplest way to do
this, please. Thanks in advance.

[ubuntu-uk] Multiple soundcards

2012-05-19 Thread Dave Hanson
Morning all,

Bit of an odd probably daft question...

I use a program called mixxx as a DJ tool. The thing is I currently use USB
headphones to listen to the music but would really like to use the same
pair of headphones to monitor the 'other' track.

Is it possible to trick Ubuntu into thinking it has two sound cards so I
can use one for the main channel and one for the monitor channel but both
would really be output on my USB headphones?

Just trying to establish if it's physically possible before I head off to
get an external 5.1 sound card and new headphones which I'm told will do
the job - I'd rather not spend a fortune if there's an another solution.

Thanks

Dave

This may be possible with 'jack', but I haven't used it in anger for
some time.

Secure Boot doesn't prevent the installation of additional software.
Everything it does happens before the operating system starts up.

 TBA are particularly glib

Yes, UEFI ensures that only the 'correct' OS starts, but after that, as
I understand it, the OS takes over responsibility for allowing only
trusted software to be installed and run. I gather that Win8 will
default to only allow apps from the Windows store, although this can be
changed if you dig deep enough into the settings, but this will still
only allow trusted digitally signed software. Plenty of opportunity to
influence matters.

Retroland is also called the countryside. As you know there are a lot
people outside major urban areas whose broadband doesn't get any faster
than 1Mb. Long live plastic disks!

[ubuntu-uk] Adding bookmark or dragging folder to sidebar isn't working

2012-05-19 Thread Gordon Burgess-Parker

12.04, clean install this morning, fully updated.
In File manager, with sidebar enabled, if I highlight a folder and click
on Bookmarks - Add Bookmark, nothing happens.

If I drag the folder to the sidebar, again nothing happens.
How do I get the facility to make a bookmark in File Manager?

Rather confusingly the Add Bookmark menu item does not work like that.
It bookmarks the current folder that nautilus is displaying. So to
add a bookmark open the folder then Bookmarks Add Bookmark.

The separate problem of it not working by dragging may be this bug:

Dragging a folder onto the sidebar works for me.

But then my move to 12.04 was a messy, broken upgrade from 11.10 :-)

Interestingly if I open a sub-folder and drag the name of the folder
from the address bar into the sidebar that works too!

Re: [ubuntu-uk] copying data from one PC to another PC

2012-05-19 Thread Carlos
Hello, I am quite interested on this question too... In a couple of
weeks I am about to upgrade a 10.04 LTSP Server to an 12.04 LTSP... and
I am going to backup home... Evolution Mail and all it's settings need
to be transfer back for each user (Old Mail, Folders etc) and how do I
go for creating the users again to replicate the old system.

Thanks!

Re: [ubuntu-uk] from 10.04 to 12.04 (was HUD vs gnome do)

2012-05-19 Thread Andres Muniz

I hope to show off new OS some time this weekend in a cafe. I'm sure
all will go   well! I just have to manage not to drop coffee.

I managed to impress but it was much too slow. Is it possible that 12.04 is a
lot more resource hungry than 10.04?

Highlights she had from 10.04 was wobbly windows and the 4 desktops. And tiding
up windows with super+S. (It suprised me!).

In 12.04 She liked the dash to find music files, and also liked it for running
apps. The hud was slow to come up but thought it was intersting.

Setting up ubuntu one was confusing for me and her, the window seemed to be
loading/syncing but we hit next and seemed to be done. She accidently set to
write documents on side by side arangement while on spread mode and I was
unable to maximize minimize nor close because the top bar dissapeared.

She will consider get more ram but it might be difficult to find because it is
something older than ddr I think (dpci?). I said that if it was too slow there
where still alternatives (xfce I was thinking).

Over all I spent over two hours with her. But I think she really did not need
any of it given that for 10.04 we did not even speak and it worked fine for her.
