I have Linux on all my computers, and yet I know I have at least 4
devices which can view NetFlix. All the while that it's possible to use
NetFlix on Wii, Xbox, PS3, iOS, Android etc there's less need for it on
the Linux desktop. Be nice if they did, but companies generally don't do
"nice" things, they do things which are financially viable and
profitable. The number of people who have Linux desktops who _don't_
have any other device which can use NetFlix is probably not that huge.

You could always try the youtube streaming, I know it's not the
monthly subscription service. But in Ubuntu if you goto the video
lens and type in the movie you are after many will show up with a 48hr
rental from youtube, I've not tried it myself. But I'm assuming it
just unlocks access and streams as normal.

People replace their HD TV with "Smart TV" for a number of reasons, not
just to get that one app. Putting NetFlix, Youtube etc onboard is a
'value-add' for the manufacturer.

I have an HDTV in my lounge and will likely replace it when an Ubuntu TV

So no new players on the market in those 2 years, makes sense. There's
Nintendo, Sony, Microsoft with their consoles and a wealth of TV and
set-top-box manufacturers, but not many new ones. Google Chrome OS is
probably the newest along with a few smaller far-east upcoming TV

They one day maybe there will be Ubuntu TV with commercial arrangements

In my opinion we've seen a massive shift in how Linux is perceived since
I started using it in 2006. When I first installed Feisty nothing
worked, a week of banging my head against the screen might bring me
sound and webcam, just look at it now. We've seen the recent work with

No.

Or "yes" if you install Windows in a virtual machine and watch via
that. Not ideal, but about the only option.

Not true. Chrome OS is a proprietary operating system based in part on
Linux and GNU tools. They add in bits to enable things like NetFlix
which we don't have on other Linux distros. You might be able to hack
the bits out of Chrome OS to make it work, good luck.
