Should have added use DeVeDe to make the DVD file from the mpg/mp4. This
saves an iso file that can be burned to disc. Works well for me. D

Well, possibly, but where's the fun in that? :¬)

I am unsure whether merging the fairly-well-known "cog = settings"
symbol and the pretty-much-universal "power off" symbol was inspired
brilliance or a bad move. It's clever but I suspect too clever, and
the symbol doesn't shout "important menu here" - it's the end of a row
of little icons.

OTOH I can't come up with a better idea.

I am amused that some of the screenshots on the Ubuntu site and wiki
still show the old, 11.x pre-cogwheel power symbol.

Thanks George

Openshot seems easy to use, I can use the Resize tool to drag the still
images along the time line to match the sound track. I'm exporting a
stupid test video as a dvd video in PAL &c with a sound track. I get an
exported file with the .dvd file extension.

Everyone

What do I use to burn this to a DVD disk? Brasero has been sitting at
the 'converting video to MPEG2' phase for some 10 minutes now... The DVD
burner works as I make ISOs on DVD discs...

cheers

try openshot it's in the repositories. Import images as a sequence, define
frame rate then add an audio track. You can then save the movie in a number
of formats.

[ubuntu-uk] Still images + sound track = DVD any suggestions for software

2012-12-04 Thread keith
Hello All

I need to take some still images and a sound track (pre existing audio
file) and produce a video that can be burned to DVD and that will play
on standard DVD players in the UK. I need to be able to 'cue' the images
to the sound track (which is people talking about the images).

I've tried PhotoFilmStrip as found in synaptic and I'm getting errors
when rendering (python error from deep in the GUI) a silly test project.

Any suggestions for software that will 'just work'?

PS: I'm on Gnome Ubuntu Remix

This page seems to dodge the question...
http://askubuntu.com/questions/10228/whats-the-right-terminology-for-unitys-ui-elements/19166#19166

... But the menu that results from clicking on TCITTRHC is "the
session menu". So that's a step in the right direction.

Hang on a sec' - you are conflating 2 different questions here.

Q1: does it actually suspend & then resume?
Q2: when it resumes, does it stop & prompt for a password or go
directly to the desktop?

Telling if it suspends can be a bit like trying to tell if the little
light goes out when you close the fridge door. If you can see, it's
not closed yet so it stays on.

But there are ways. Normally if a portable suspends, it goes silent -
the fans stop, the hard disk spins down, etc. It will often go cool if
not 100% cold. The power LED may blink or pulse slowly, or a special
sleep LED may light up. E.g. on my Toshiba Satellite the LED pulses
slowly, but on my 2 old Thinkpads, the power LED stays on but a small
crescent-mood LED lights up to tell you it's asleep.

Firstly, is your machine sleeping? Once we have verified that, /then/
we can work out why it's not asking for a password. But if it doesn't
sleep, then it doesn't wake, and if it doesn't wake then it will never
ask for the password.

I wasn't criticising anything, I was stating that it does mention Linux
