[ubuntu-uk] Constant crashing

2014-05-30 Thread Gareth France
I recently installed Ubuntu on a friends computer as it was running
painfully slowly with Windows. It is an older machine and the
performance is now acceptable. However it appears that it is regularly
hanging and requiring a forced reboot to cure this. When working on
their broadband setup yesterday I witnessed this three times in a row,
gave up and used my laptop instead. I have run the memory check that
comes with Ubuntu and found no errors. I just wondered if anyone had any
ideas how to track down the fault. Although slow Windows did not crash
like this.

Hi Gareth,

Can you please give the model and specifications for your friend's computer?

Unfortunately not, until I return there this afternoon. Being a desktop
it may not even have a model. All I know off hand is that it is a Pentium 4.

If it never had a memory upgrade, you could be struggling with lack of
memory and excessive use of swap. Take a note of the memory size and
the size of the swap partition. You might consider one of the
lightweight *buntus as a better starting point. I have a Windows 2000
box that had been upgraded both in memory and motherboard. Performance
is well below average with Ubuntu, but with Lubuntu (I think that's what
I put on it), it performs really well.

OMG! That's really old by today's standards. No wonder it feels slow.
Everything will be; memory, disk, dma.

As a guess I'd take a long hard look at the hard drive... Run a few
sanity checks on it.

Hi,

On that age of machine I would consider lubuntu or xubuntu or even
crunchbang (not a *buntu but Debian based lightweight Openbox os, hope I
don't break any list rules straying from *buntus)

Also look at how much RAM the machine has, it can be picked up for a few
pounds now !
