[ubuntu-uk] Upgrade instead of install
Hi, I wish to go from Dapper to Edgy without doing an installation and loosing all my settings and other bits which are installed on D. U/K/E and the rest have made the installation process very simple by the use of a live distribution which can be installed, but I would like to have the opportunity to upgrade from D to E, keeping everything on the existing system. I know I can upgrade on the net as I have read the appropriate pages of instruction but I want to upgrade from CD. Is this possible from the live/install disc or is a different disc required? For future releases, is it possible for the live CD to have an upgrade icon as well as an install icon, or would it be better for a different CD to be issued? As more and more computer ignorant users like myself are persuaded to join the Ubuntu camp, this upgrade business is going to be increasingly important so that it can be done without losing all the present system. One thing which will scare off the ordinary user, is saying that upgrading is a doddle, all that is needed is to issue the following commands, and then quote a long incantation of jargon which is virtually meaningless to anyone but a computer geek. The GUI has been very successful as the way for the ordinary user to interface with the computer. The necessary command has been issued by clicking on an icon; what that command is the user doesn't care so long as the end result is what is wanted. Any help which anyone is able to give will be very much appreciated. Berni. -- ubuntu-uk@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-uk https://wiki.kubuntu.org/UKTeam/

I changed the Print Command to kprinter and kept the quotes. Should I have done? Firefox does print now, but the dialogue box is very much curtailed and there would be no way to put the Print Command back in. The Print Command box is no longer displayed. I have looked in the package management program, but can find no reference to Kprinter, either installed or to install. Been there, done that, just waiting for the T-shirt. That was my first port of call as I am already aware of that US idiots-in-crass-y. I think it must be a virus which affects almost all programs and printer drivers. I even tried setting to A3 for one of the printers, which prints that size, but I still get the same message. I have also re-installed Firefox, but that made no difference either. This is the only program which will not print, and I don't know where to kick. > > I seem to recall that Firefox isn't very good at making this a 'sticky' > selection, and you may have to re-select it every time you start > Firefox. :-( Par for the course. Yes, when printing from many packages, it is very difficult to make A4 the default. When using Ovation Pro, I get a warning if the output is being sent to US Letter or A4 when the page size is A3. I am sure that I have had printer output from other programs when the page size was A4 and the printer setting was for US Letter, but Firefox just simply will not print. Many thanks for your help with this problem; if you, or anyone else can think of something which I can do, it will be very much appreciated. > > -- > | David M,__| replyto email valid <365 days | en, fr, (de) | > | Edinburgh, Scotland. | but on-list replies preferred | | > *Trim quoted text & interleave reply comments: it's MUCH easier to read* > *Filter triggers: No-context, excess-quoting, slug-trails, zero-content* > > Thanks for these instructions. [ubuntu-uk] Firefox no print
Hi, Can anyone help with this. I cannot print from Firefox to my postscript printers. I always get a message saying that the printer will not print on that size of paper, or words to that effect. This is of course nonsense as an A4 printer should be able print A4. I have no trouble printing from Mozilla or Opera or Konqueror or Galeon. I installed the other browsers to check that they all printed OK. I am using Firefox 1.5.0.7 on Ubuntu 6.06. What is wrong with my setup? How can I investigate this problem? All help gratefully received. Bernard Hill -- ubuntu-uk@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-uk https://wiki.kubuntu.org/UKTeam/

I changed the grub kernel line to read: kernel /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.15-27-386 root=/dev/hdb5 ro quiet splash vga=791 I kept the vga=791 because I had some difficulty earlier with the VDU going out of range during boot-up before the desktop was reached. I now have my boot-up screen instead of a complete blank, and it is nice to know that the filesystems etc are all OK. It was interesting to see that everyone has their favourite editor; I used gedit. I could, of course, have used kate! All help very much appreciated. Berni. -- ubuntu-uk@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-uk https://wiki.kubuntu.org/UKTeam/

I have looked at MENU.LST and it contains this line which I think you are referring to: kernel /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.15-27-386 root=/dev/hdb5 ro quiet=vga=791 Does this need to be changed? I think I can change the line if necessary. I am sure a need to be SU to make any change. Is that correct? [ubuntu-uk] Bootup screen
Following one of the recent updates, the splash screen and boot up information between the the Grub display and the desktop, has disappeared. The system boots up OK but the screen stays blank until the desktop shows up. How can I recover the startup screen. Kubuntu 6.06. I hope someone can offer some assistance. Best wishes, Bernard Hill -- ubuntu-uk@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-uk https://wiki.kubuntu.org/UKTeam/
