[ubuntu-uk] BT FeatureLine Phone (again for some)
Hey Everyone on the list, I've just been provisionally given a small office at the school I attend for our school CyberMentors group, and we're going to turn it into a office as well as a mentoring room. We're allowed use of the BT FeatureLine phone system, provided we buy the featureline phone (priced at a hefty £80 inc. VAT). They have stated that they won't offer support for our phone if we don't use the BT phones on the system, and as it's something that I am not familiar with in the slightest, I'm not going to be able to resolve if it something does go wrong. (Yes, I have been told that it is possible to use a standard phone on the featureline system, as it's all programmed at the exchange, but it doesn't sit well with IT) As a school student group, we don't make money and never will, so even buying a "Argos Value handset" is beyond our scope (yes, it seems daft with it being a fiver, but no jokes we don't have *any* money). If you could donate a FeatureLine phone, we would be so grateful. So long as it has a power supply, we would be able to use it. It doesn't have to be the latest one, so long as it's in working condition we would be very happy :) I'm able to pay postage,or if you fancy anything (can be more than one thing!) from my section on the SwapShop page on the London Hackspace at http://bit.ly/bW7QCQ I am happy to swap any of it :) P.s. Some of you may have already got something similar if you are on the LHS mailing list, and I do apologise, but the auction for the really cheap BT FL phone I saw quickly went above what I could afford, and all the others are either too much or in such a bad state that it would be worthless buying it just because it was cheap. [ubuntu-uk] Ubuntu UK Community Events Banner
Hello All, After the confusion regarding location at the GeekNic on Sunday, I thought it would be wise to raise this point; Is it possible to have a Ubuntu UK Community Event Banner? It would most likely just be a rather large banner stating "Ubuntu UK - Local Community Event" or similar (include hashtag/twitter/website?). Perhaps an (AlanBell Shirt!) Aubergine colour for the font too? I am, at very best, a junior designer, and as such am quite frankly shocking when it comes to things like this. I think it would be nice, however, to have all the ideas submitted to a pool. The wiki page for the creation of the banner is at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/UKTeam/EventsBanner Get Designing Peeps! [ubuntu-uk] Suggestions/Comments/Feedback for the GeekNic
Hey everyone! It was fantastic today, we had great fun, the weather was lovely, and Hyde Park was (somewhat) green! There are pictures floating around the twitterverse, as well as on the facebook event, so do have a look if you have the time! Just one thing - if anyone has any feedback, comments, suggestions or improvements, please email them to me! joseph.od...@googlemail.com Everyone that I've asked (and popey has asked people too!) says that it is something to do again, so if there is anything you want extra next time, please suggest! I have already been informed that it is an idea to get somewhere a lot closer to toilets - I thought there would be in Hyde Park, but that is something we will definitely look at next time! Oh, and we'll try and use somewhere close to the Boris Bike stations, as that could prove useful (well, at least if the keys worked!) Thanks once again everyone, and I hope you all enjoyed it as much as I did! [ubuntu-uk] ANNOUNCE: GeekNic Tomorrow
Hello All, The GeekNic is Tomorrow, and as such, there are 2 final things to say! 1. Arrival Time I shall be at Speakers' Corner from about quarter past 12, and we'll make our way to somewhere in hyde park just after 1. We will endeavour to post our location on twitter/the wiki as soon as we find a permanent place in hyde park. (Most likely GPS lat/long co-ordinates!) 2. Food & Games There will definitely be food there but, as mentioned in previous messages, anything you can bring is appreciated :) Also, keep in mind when you bring park games that there are going to be lots of people there, and so not something that's going to float off half a mile away! See you all tomorrow! Sean, You are getting too pernickety about bloody top posting. Excuse Me? He never ONCE said "I can't be bothered to cut from this second window". Sometimes there are technical issues which mean that it is hard to no top-post, and I do not think that it is much of a problem. > And the PROBLEM is that when you let guidelines be ignored 90% of the > time then "everybody jumps on the bandwagon" and things will get much > worse for those who don't want e-mails 200 lines long where only the > first 20 words are relevant. What, emails 200+ lines long like yours? No-one is going to "Jump on the bandwagon". This is a mailing list for christ's sake, not a bloody gravy train. People do it occasionally because they can't due to issues, because they are in a rush or because they just don't want to. You are "punishing" the whole spectrum, whereas you should be focussing on the latter. > And a "quiet private e-mail" wouldn't have initiated a discussion, > which is what I wanted to do. Because it's not just Neil Greenwood > who does it... David Jones just illustrated this, with a particularly > "wind up" e-mail where he top posted loads and loads of stuff "because > he could" -- that's not good, is it? Oh, so you wanted to stir it up? And yes, a private email would have been better, as the person in question probably didn't want their email exploded across all four corners of the Ubuntu UK Mailing List. And as for your previous email: > If they are making phones that "make it impossible to not top post" > then "they" should be told of their mistake... are you saying the > iPhone does this, because if it does my friend Hugo is in charge of > that particular development at Apple in California and I can ask him > for his views on it... as somebody who has been on mailing lists, like > me, for years I think I can safely say that Hugo will say "no it > doesn't, they're just being lazy". You do realise that we, mailing list users, equate for less than 25% of people worldwide - they are not going to make a special mailing list function for a phone for something like the iPhone, because there is not a high enough demand. You may well have Hugo who is in charge of Apple Development, but if it doesn't need to be on a phone, they aren't going to put it in. --- Joe O'Dell GreenerClassrooms Project Co-Ordinator http://www.greenerclassrooms.org.uk Fedora Ambassador & Contributor (FreeMedia) http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/User:Ascenseur bedsLUG Co-Ordinator beds.lug.org.uk DFEY Member (SouthEast) dfey.org On 7 Aug 2010, at 08:34, Sean Miller wrote: > On 7 August 2010 08:14, Joe O'Dell wrote: >> For reference, for anyone that is actually bothered by mailing list >> etiquette, here is the Ubuntu Mailing List >> Guidelines: http://www.ubuntu.com/support/community/mailinglists > > > Proper quoting is very important on mailing lists, to ensure that it > is easy to follow the conversation. Whoa, Whoa, Whoa, WHOA! Ease Up - I know some people stick to the mailing list etiquette, but sometimes it's not always possible. I try to where I can, but I don't expect to get a mouthful if I don't have time to etc. Personally, I don't always see the direct need to post underneath quoted text, as it's not always relevant, and can also be a hinderance when reading the email, but I follow most of it anyway. And who is going to get upset? I don't think there is a normal reason to cry over a mailing list, even if it was for a mistake. > Meanwhile, the folks on "daily digest" are going to be *so* thrilled > to keep being confused and are going to be *so* grateful to you (not) > that you've "apologised" (though repeated "P.S. Yes, I can understand that it's not in line with how you *should* post on mailing lists, but just a kind reminded privately via email would have sufficed. [ubuntu-uk] GeekNic - Last Call!
Hello All, The GeekNic is occurring This Sunday, so we need to highlight a few issues and important things! 1. Food We've left this as a "bring and share" type of thing as it's not viable/fair for one person to bring everything. If you could all bring at least one thing, that would be fantastic. I'll try to bring at least one picnic blanket to make nomming easier :) (Bear in mind there are ~22 people coming to the geeknic!) 2. Travel We've put up info for travel to the park on the wiki at http://wiki.ubuntu.com/UKTeam/UKGeekNic2010 Basically, there is the bus stop and underground at Hyde Park Corner, with car parking at Marble Arch or Park Lane. 3. Location We are all going to meet at Speakers' Corner at 1pm - from there, we will move to our preferred location. If you want my mobile number so that you can catch up with us later, please just ask :) 4. Games Finally, if you have any park-suitable games, please bring them as well! There will be a mix of ages, and so it'll be good to keep everyone entertained! (I suppose this is more along the lines of Frisbee or Football, but I suppose Twister is suitable too!) Have a fantastic week, and I can't wait to see you all on Sunday! For reference, here is the Wiki page: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/UKTeam/UKGeekNic2010 Basically, it has all ground to a halt because I have received little to no response outside of the Doodle Poll, (which has 7 people on it); Editing on the wiki for ideas fizzled out after the first few days also. Anyway, if anyone has any ideas at all, or would suddenly like to attend, please scribble them on the wiki and add yourself to the doodle poll. A location and date will be decided within 2 weeks. Hey everyone, I just wanted to let you all know that I have been in contact with the Science Museum (for issyl0's organised outing there in April), and they have free WiFi access available. All it entails is that we collect the key from the Information Desk when we arrive, which is no hardship seeing as it is free! I've included the email below if anyone is interested. Re: [ubuntu-uk] Alex (laptop, not person)
That would be good for the "silver surfers" that struggle with computers, and it promotes linux at the same time! I can't wait to see when this comes out - It looks as if you get a USB Key that enables you to log into your desktop from any other Alex machine. Now that is a good idea, but what happens when you don't have an Alex machine? (Although it is a laptop, so you can carry it around with you!) Thanks for pointing that out Johnathon! However, if you were to follow the "after-school" route, I dont think IT support would take kindly to you dismantling their PCs! (but, they wouldn't like it if you wiped their disks clean either - so it is a fair point). Isn't it possible to "lock down" a live-usb edition of ubuntu? that may be another solution, (if it can be done...) Re: [ubuntu-uk] Not receiving emails - latest
Des, I'm currently using talktalk too - although I havent dare ring up the support department because (and you may call this unfair) but all previous ISPs I have used, their support department is about as good as hitting your head against a brick wall. I've only just joined this group, so I'm not sure what problem you're having - is it something to do with email? I've got a laptop with 8.04 that uses TalkTalk POP email - I'll see if I can help you! If you want to email me, please feel free to at joseph.od...@googlemail.com Joe On 7 Jan 2010, at 11:45, Des wrote: > Thanks for previous tips. > sadly still no emails from talktalk since 22 Dec > > I cancelled batch downloads and that semmed not to help. > I tried a ping . Re: [ubuntu-uk] Ubuntu T-shirts
Petra, If you could possibly send me a few to distribute to other Ubuntu people where I live, that'd be great. Any number and type of shirts would be good, although it looks like I would need quite a few mens (if thats possible, if its not thats not problem either). It'd be postage within the UK, so I wouldn't mind paying something towards shipping. Thanks. Joe > Hello Dave, > > Hope that everything is going well.
