Re: [ubuntu-uk] External hard disks and backup strategies
I use Simple Backup to do automated daily backups to an external USB drive. The drive is Fat32 formatted so if anything goes wrong with my Ubuntu installation I can easily restore my home folder. It seems to work well. I would naively assume that as USB is now well-proven technology, these would work just fine with Ubuntu, but is that the case? How easy would it be to automate backups to such a disk? Would it mount with a persistent mount point, or would it change with every unplug or system reboot? Then there is the question of what backup strategy I should actually use. I was assuming that an automated rsync every week would be the easiest, but perhaps there are other possibilities? Something automated, once configured, without requiring user intervention is an absolute must: the whole point of doing backups is that I don't have to remember to do it! "WHSmiths Watch" Hello everyone, As the is a nation wide listing, I wondered if my experience was replicated in the rest of the country. The plethora of "buy new cool Vista magazines" seems to elbowing the three Linux magazines out of existence in Wolverhampton and Bridgnorth. My main concern is that my favourite magazine "Linux User and Developer", to which I have subscribed for a couple of years, seems to have gone very ominously silent: no replies to emails, no replies to telephone messages. The web site is still functioning although cobwebs seem to be gathering on it. Is it me that they don't like, or have they gone belly down?? -- Regard, Howard Supporting Open Source Software. http://www.fsf.org/ And Open Standards http://www.oasis-open.org/who/ I have had a similar experience. Being new to Ubuntu I thought I would buy a Linux magazine or two. I couldn't find a trace of any Linux magazine in central Edinburgh. I know I have seen a couple on newsstands in the past. Incidentally, I noticed that amazon.co.uk has many books about Ubuntu and I was wondering if anyone could recommend a good beginner's title.
