What you've just posted, may as well be written in Urdu, the user the

just to get a usable desktop. What they need is a selection that
explains in plain English this is what you do if the normal method
doesn't produce a desktop. Why was the safe graphics mode option ever
 removed?

Maybe we should even get grub to create a 'safe graphics mode' entry,
that way if a user later experiences video issues they can at least
 get to a desktop.

Old nVidia hardware is an absolute nightmare in my experience, and
I'll be keeping clear of nVidia for a long time. I experienced bug
220951 on a system which failed to start X. What to do then. Unusable
tty's and no X Screwed. A safe graphics mode in my boot menu would
have made life so much easier. I've learnt, and changed my grub conf
 to always create one.

I think you hit the nail on the head.

as long as we have to rely on binary closed source drivers direct from
manufactures. these drivers will struggle to keep up with open-source
development.

in the meantime i think new and general users should run the more stable
Long Term Support release (LTS). as it is generally the most stable release
compared to the 6 monthly release. tends to upgrade to next LTS more
reliably than the 6 monthly to 6 monthly. also the LTS is a 2 year release
cycle. allowing longer between updates. (not sure this is made clear enough
for new users).

I was trying to run a N500 today from a live CD and it would not boot

not want to do this so I booted from a live usb stick (10.04)

I saw a reported comment that the n500 by default does not have the
bios set to boot from CD.

I got to the boot order menu by using F12 at the first screen, then
choosing usb. If I had edited the bios for a changed boot sequence I
think I would still have needed to use F12.

Assuming the remote machine is running linux, then you should also be
able to use the -a option (which incorporates a few common used

 work.

Slightly off topic but might be useful to you, I had a external HDD, it

i had similar issues with fat filesystems on target.

from : http://sial.org/howto/rsync/

Normally, the -a option can be used to perfectly mirror the files. However,
if the target filesystem does not support permissions, a different set of
options should be used to avoid warnings from rsync. To synchronize data to
a USB drive with a FAT filesystem, I use the -rlt options.

man rsync

-r, --recursive recurse into directories
-l, --links copy symlinks as symlinks
-t, --times preserve modification times

[ubuntu-uk] Fwd: [dundee] DVWA at the society 8th

2010-04-06 Thread azmodie
-- Forwarded message --
From: fi...@finux.co.uk
Date: 5 April 2010 19:10
Subject: [dundee] DVWA at the society 8th
To: dun...@lists.lug.org.uk

Hi Guys,

As a trip down memory lane, i'm sending out the reminder for this meeting.

The University of Abertay Dundee Linux Society;

Are proud to announce that Tom Mackenzie of Random Storm will be
talking to the Linux Society on Thursday the 8th of April about Damn
Vulnerable Web App (DVWA). DVWA has rocketed to forefront of its
competitors for its amazing talent of teaching web developers, ethical
hackers, and interested individuals how web application can be both
secure and insecure.

TALK ABSTRACT;

The talk is going to consist of three sections.

The first section is going to be a brief introduction about myself, my
background and how I first got into this line of work.

The second section is going to look at DVWA which is an open source
web application created by Ryan Dewhurst and has been recently
acquired by RandomStorm LTD. DVWA stand for Damn Vulnerable Web
Application and was created as an aid for security professionals to
test their skills and tools in a legal environment, help web
developers better understand the processes of securing web
applications and aid teachers/students to teach/learn web application
security in a class room environment.

The third section is going to look at specific web application
vulnerabilities i.e. SQL Injection and Cross Site Scripting, how they
work and how they can be prevented. DVWA incorporates a high security
level which will be used here to present what security should be in
place in that particular environment.

END OF ABSTRACT

The talk is free and open to everyone, including non-students. This
is a fantastic opportunity to get into grass roots security testing,
and you never know you may actually learn a thing or two.

Feel free to pass this around to anyone you think may find it of interest

 Hi Folks,

I joined this list a couple of weeks ago, and tonight I've had my first
reason to post something. Been using Ubuntu on and off since 6.06 and with
every release I'm getting closer to making it my main OS (I dual-boot with
Windows Vista at the moment, which is my main reason for finally wanting to
 ditch Windows...)

Until now I've always used 32-bit versions of Ubuntu and was happily
running 9.10 on this machine. Tonight, though, I decided to do a fresh
install and go with the 64-bit version. I was hitherto unaware that my
machine would support it, but that turned out not to be the case.

What's annoying me is that I have a list of kernels that appear on the GRUB
menu that I no longer have installed. Indeed, when I try to boot into any of
them, the boot process stops. I deleted all the partitions that Ubuntu
originally resided on and recreated them all from scratch, so I can only
assume that the grub list that comes up is stored in the MBR, which should,
in theory, be on my main windows partition.

Back in the old days I was able to edit /boot/grub/menu.lst or something
similar... where are the grub configuration files kept these days? There
seems to be quite a change in 9.10.

 Thanks in advance.

In my experience some of these network drives don't use TCP/IP but a hacked
version of IPX. Did you have to install drivers for it in Windows?

 Simon

I have a netgear NAS1100 which uses samba shares. which as you say just
mounts in winxp no problem.
trying to get it to mount in linux had me going round in circles.
eventually turned out i needed to mount a share not the root of the machine
eg. //192.168.0.3/media/ not //192.168.0.3/ and use the name of the share as
username with blank password.

sudo mount -t cifs //192.168.0.3/media/ /media/fnd/ -o
username=NameOfShare,password='',file_mode=0777,dir_mode=0777

this may not be the case but hey worth a try.

2009-02-03 Thread azmodie
2009/2/3 Ciaran Mooney general.moo...@googlemail.com:
 Hey,

My computer monitor just died. :( Booo. So I'm in the market for a new
TFT screen. Just wanted to garner some opinions about good value
 monitors.

Also I don't think my current graphics card can handle a larger
screen, it can only just cope with basic desktop effects! So I'll
likely be needing a new graphics card too. Now I know this means going
with ATI or nVidia, both of which have either rubbish open drivers, or
dodgy evil closed ones. I've used nVidia before, and they seem to be
less painful. However I again have no idea about which graphics cards
 are good value.

It'd be great if there were any commercial cards with open drivers
that'd be great. Essentially I'm lazy, and open drivers tend to be
 less hassle.

 Any ideas?

I just boght 2 of these 19 monitors from tesco
http://direct.tesco.com/q/R.204-4733.aspx
resonable price and the screens are very bright. max resolution is 1440x900.

as to graphics card. i have nvidia in my desktop and ati on one laptop
and intel in other laptop. was not happy with the open drivers for
nvidia or ati so closed source it was. all seem to work resonably.
only problem i had with intel was that there was no opengl support

hope you find the help you need.

Re: [ubuntu-uk] Im buying a new phone!! How compatible are android and Ubuntu?

2009-01-26 Thread azmodie
I opted for a Openmoko Freerunner last august. development has been
slower than some would have expected and there are a couple of
hardware buzzing issues. (there is a fix but requires soldering) There
are plenty of distros [1] for it including two based on debian and
there is also a beta port of android released by koolu. status etc
here [2]

although android on the freerunner is not quite ready as a daily phone
many others are using other ditros quite happily.

as far as i know androids filesytem on the g1 provided by t-mobile is
readonly. it has been cracked twice and then patched again in updates.
google is offering a developer edition of the g1 which solves this
problem but this would not come with the unlimited data contract from
t-mobile.

also worth noting that there is also a g2 handset on the way. which
does not feature a keyboard. Thus awaiting the cupcake release which
should include a virtual keyboard. some great guys in the community
have added a virtual keyboard to the koolu release but it has issues
with not being able to input text in some of the dialogs.

as for the android os look and feel. i realy like it. some nice
visuals and snappy screens.

Hi Ken, You dont say in your email the area you are located which
would help to find more lugs closer to you.

In Dundee we have The Abertay Linux society (http://www.thelinuxsociety.org.uk)
as mentioned in Linux Format issue 115 (page 14) alongside Edlug.

Quote from site :
You don't have to have any Linux experience to come to a meeting and
you will find lot's of people who enjoy helping people understand how
Linux works. Our meetings normally consist of a informal presentation
on numbers of subjects relating F.L.O.S.S (Free, Libre, Open-Source,
Software) and current events happening in the software world.

The society promotes the use of non proprietary software as a core
replacement, with a friendly and relaxed approach and with a variety
of experience a good discussion is normally always expected.

Although we are affiliated to The Abertay University, the society is
open to both students and non-studenty types.

all the best in your search.

well lets just say there have beed some intresting projects including
darpa challenge team axia used a ps3 to power its navigation and the 8
ps3 cluster simulating black holes.

yellow dog linux now owned by flickstar has added the ability to use
the rsx-gpu ram as swap almost equivalently giving you 512mb.

this is intresting tutorial too from a media center point of view.

i'm sure someone can find the press release o the rsx-gpu thing.
