[ubuntu-uk] [marketing] great-grandma-takes-internet-shopping-by-storm-with-ubuntu

2009-03-31 Thread alan c
I have posted this expos'e of how easy it is for a great grandma to do
internet shopping on her own with Ubuntu
http://dnc.digitalunite.com/2009/03/31/great-grandma-takes-internet-shopping-by-storm-with-ubuntu-linux/

It would be great to think it might get some good coverage, any
suggestions please about where I could post about it?
Or mention it yourself elsewhere by all means.

I tweeted about it on @otfrom, but I think digg, reddit or slashdot
would be the place to go.

2009 - The year of the linux desktop for Great Grandmas?

Can I use it in Full Circle magazine next month?

We did a story a good year or so ago on a similar theme, written by
Knightwise, about his 'Ubuntu Granny' using Ubuntu on her EEE that they
bought her.

BTW: just don't let her near Twitter, it's too addictive!!! ;D

If anyone else has Ubuntu themed stories/articles we're always looking
for stuff...

Yes please!
Either in full or edited.

If you can also give the DU site a plug it will be useful too because
until I recently came along they thought the world was only Windows.
:-)

I hope that an active interest into their site re Ubuntu will awaken
them to how useful a reliable secure and stable OS is - for elderly
and vulnerable novices. I would have had nightmares trying to do this
with credit cards and Windows in the circumstances.

It is a long little old piece, I will be happy to work with you to
shrink it and if that is needed please give me some guidance?

LOL

At the moment she is happy that the internet is one very big shop.

Do yuo have a link I could refer to? I am not into stumble, does it
work like that with a link?

It also says a lot about PC training courses - I know
they can't tailor a course for every student, but they don't seem to
offer stuff that will be useful for the average new user. I know my
widowed cousin asked about a course that was running locally, and was
told she was too old to learn! I wonder how many PCs are sitting unused
because the surviving partner can't use it.

Yes I had to smile when she told about the friend who could invert a
printer font

Stumbleupon works by people having a toolbar in their browser. Two
things happen.

1) People submit stuff they 'find' but clicking a little thumbs up
icon. They give it a description, tags etc and that's it, it's in the
stumbleupon database.
2) People get bored, and click the 'stumble' button in the toolbar, if
their profile matches the tags on that submitted page they may get to
see it, and they can then (optionally) thumbs up or thumbs down the
article.

You can visit stumbleupon and find the link to the submitted site but
that's generally not how it's used.

Cheers,
Al.

What a gross, ageist attitude to take with regards to training courses.
My brother, who is knocking on 73 runs a course arranged by Age Concern,
for his contemporaries and younger.
