[ubuntu-uk] Test drive and V-Box ..

2011-02-16 Thread Barry Drake
Hi there Someone (was it you Alan C?) suggested TestDrive as an
easy way of doing regular tests on the Alpha Natty. I've been trying
TestDrive with VirtualBox as the engine. Nice idea! BUT, behaviour is
very different from running a CD. At the moment, I have the well
reported problem with Compiz/Unity not being compatible with Nouveau.
Now, if I boot from the CD, I can see the Unity interface, but there are
a few known problems, and it's easy to crash Compiz. If I run the same
ISO through TestDrive, Compiz crashes at boot time, and Natty defaults
to the Gnome desktop.

Any thoughts?

Incidentally, I love the Unity desktop (Barry dons tin-hat).

Regards,Barry.

If it weren't for the fact that Natty needs 3D for the Unity desktop,
which you won't get out of the box booting a CD on
Testdrive/Virtualbox.

Due to the VirtualBox extensions not being present. Have you tried
doing the install inside virtualbox and then adding the extensions,
then rebooting the VM?

The other day I downloaded the latest VirtualBox, and tried Natty. I
did not try too hard but I seem to remember that the version of X in
Natty is too new and not supported by the extensions.

Works a treat actually. You need Virtualbox 4, which isn't in the repos,
but comes as a .deb file and install the virtualbox guest extensions in
the guest, then sit back and enjoy all the compiz powered unity goodness.

I was trying VirtualBox 4.0.2 on a 64 bit Windows host. I was at work

what was wrong. Can you please let me know what version you are using,
as I may want to try and run it at home on a Linux host. Thanks.

VirtualBox version 4.0.0 r69151 on 32 bit Ubuntu 10.10 host with Natty
64bit guest (yes, you can do that too). Not entirely surprised the
windows host didn't work as it relies on passing through OpenGL and

[ubuntu-uk] Test driving a new version (was Re: natty with unity)

This is a slight tangent, but I'd like to see this but don't fancy upgrading

 Windows) all as options?

As it's stored in a subdirectory of the windows partition, if the answer is
 no I'd ask why?

I don't know the answer to your specific question, but trying a
test-drive of the new version is precisely the Use Case for the
testdrive application. If I remember correctly, it's available in
10.04 (just checked while looking for the following link, looks like
it is). There's a nice GUI for it in 10.10 too (there's a PPA for
10.04) - try looking at Dustin Kirkland's blog on
http://blog.dustinkirkland.com/2010/02/have-you-taken-lucid-for-testrive-yet.html

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:testdrive/ppa
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install testdrive

Also install testdrive-gtk if you want the GUI.

If you don't want to use the command-line to install, open Software
Centre, choose Edit Software Sources on the menu, click the Other
Software tab then the Add button, enter ppa:testdrive/ppa and
click the Add button. Close the Software Sources and go back to the
Software Centre window and search for testdrive.

As an aside, it'll create a virtual machine from other ISO images, not
just Ubuntu.

Cofion/Regards,
Neil.

P.S. Sean, sorry if you get this twice, but I cc'd you when I changed
the Subject line.

That's not the servers fault, but googles.

Anyone who signed up for a Google Mail account before the court case
in which it was revealed GMail was a trademark held by another company
would have an @gmail account. Those who registered after would have an
@googlemail account. The problem comes in that google still accept
mail addressed to @gmail to people with @googlemail accounts. However
when people with @googlemail accounts send email it appears to come
from @googlemail and not @gmail.

This means that people with @googlemail accounts believe falsely that
they have a @gmail account. So they sign up for mailing lists (like
this one) as foo@gmail.com and then wonder why their mail to the
list bounces because they're not subscribed. The reason being that
mailman will send the confirmation mail to @gmail but any mails the
user sends to the list will appear to come from @googlemail and as
such mailman spits it out complaining that the @googlemail is not
subscribed to that mailing list.

In my mind that's googles fault for not educating the users about
their address and the implications of having an @googlemail account,
and not rejecting @gmail mail for @googlemail accounts.
