Thanks for the advice. I've found another approved supplier that does
more of a custom build, looks into these things, and actually answers
e-mails from prospective customers!

If you can stretch your budget, go for a Thinkpad as others have
suggested (albeit from suppliers you've said aren't suitable):

People can only speak as they find, of course. I would not reject Dells based
on my own experience.

I've not had a Dell desktop, but never had any problems installing any
mainstream Linux distro on a Dell laptop. I would only be wary of installing
stock Debian becuase of the difficulty in getting wi-fi to run, but that is not
specific to Dells.

Heartily endorse Thinkpads. All those I've had have been variously dropped,
kicked, trodden on and spilled on and continued to run perfectly. They don't
bend when you lift them up off the desk one-handed either.

Strongly agreed. Especially for this particular machine in the light
of the comments on the Arch wiki -- I would run not walk away from
this. I have used/supported several HP laptops; I do not like them
much. (Marginally) better than Sony, (even) worse than Dell.

Lenovo are the best, with Toshiba a distant second. But I wouldn't
spend my money on anything except Lenovos from the Thinkpad (*NOT*
IdeaPad or anything else) range, TBH.

Good UK sources:

(My last one came from there.)

http://www.tier1online.com/

(Comes well recommended but I've not tried them myself.)

I usually have a look on the Arch WiKi to see if there are installation
problems.

I would not recommend this one from this page.

Your best bet is to get a second hand corporate ThinkPad or similar
machine. These all run Linux well and because it is used you get a lot more
bang for your buck.

[ubuntu-uk] Any reasons why Ubuntu(-MATE) wouldn't work on this laptop?

2017-06-19 Thread Adam Funk
I'm shopping around for a new work laptop, & we have to buy it from
Insight. I'm thinking about this one:

http://www.uk.insight.com/en-gb/productinfo/laptops-and-notebooks/0004363583-0001

HP ZBook 14 G2 Mobile Workstation14" - Core i7 5500U - 8 GB RAM - 1 TB
HDD

and I wonder if anyone could take a look at the specs & tell me if
you see any reasons why Ubuntu-MATE wouldn't work on it.

Thanks,
Adam
