The Desktop PC last had a re-install for 10.04 and has had version upgrades since then to 11.10 and that is the one that shows the new feature from the 11.10 upgrade. The EEEPC had 11.04 installed and was upgraded to 11.10. There are other detail difference between the two. I'm not a fan of popups during the upgrade. I like to set an upgrade running and go off and have my tea, or something. It's very irritating to come back two hours later to find a popup waiting to be answered and the upgrade only half done. Normally "meassaging" intergration and other notification support is provided by extensions/plugins which need to be installed and enabled to take effect. I will guess that one of these was an upgrade from an older release and kept the older notification enabled, whereas the newer install got the defaults at the time. One of those features of our upgrade path I personally find confusing for sure, I would like to see a popup to tell you you might want the new stuff or something on upgrade. -apw -- ubuntu-uk@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-uk https://wiki.ubuntu.com/UKTeam/

It is the empathy icon (a sort of green square voice bubble) that alternates with a sort of alert symbol. To me it is a bit irritating as I always get it when I start Empathy because I get messages from the freenode NikServ to tell me that I am identified for my TonyP nickname. I have to click the icon, which brings up the chat window, to stop it flashing. Less irritating is when my brother messages me. Strangely, I don't get any of this on my EEEPC Netbook, but the mail icon does turn blue. Wish I knew why. They both run 11.10 with same Empathy version. Let me know if I'm wrong (which is possible as I don't use empathy anymore) but do you not get a thing in the messaging menu that you can click on to bring the message to the front? That's how it works with email. I know it's not as convenient as clicking the notification, but it's not much slower (the icon should be just above the notification). -Matt Daubney -- ubuntu-uk@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-uk https://wiki.ubuntu.com/UKTeam/

Empathy in Unity presents that pop-up at the top, in response to which you need to hunt down the appropriate Empathy window and type into it. Any attempt to interact with the notification causes it to become invisible. Gnome shell presents a pop-up from the bottom which you can respond to by clicking on and typing into. Alternatively, you can hunt down the Empathy window and type there if you prefer. -- Avi -- ubuntu-uk@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-uk https://wiki.ubuntu.com/UKTeam/

[ubuntu-uk] Attractive Features for Ubuntu
Hi all, I've been using Ubuntu for a few years now, since Karmic, on several computers. These days I mainly use Ubuntu (Oneiric 11.10) on my desktop and Xubuntu (Oneiric 11.10) on my netbook. Recently, though, I've been experimenting with Gnome-Shell on Fedora and, although I still prefer Ubuntu, there a few features I really like in Gnome-Shell and I was wondering if there are any equivalent/similar features for Ubuntu (Unity/XFCE mainly as they're what I use) The main think I like is the notification system. When logged in with Empathy, if I receive a message a small notification appears at the bottom of the screen with the message, which I can then click to reply straight away or ignore and allow it to disappear like a normal notification. Does anyone know of any way to get this sort of feature or anything similar? Joe -- ubuntu-uk@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-uk https://wiki.ubuntu.com/UKTeam/
