Hey Sean,

I'm happy I managed to solve your problem. I've finally started to
learn enough through my own Ubuntu experience to be able to help
others.

Do you live anywhere around Essex? If so I'll take you up on the offer ;)

Forget that last comment.. it just seems to have reverted with the install.
Have changed back to UK and (touch wood) it's fine.

Thanks all,

Jai, you're a genius! :-)

If I ever meet you I'll buy you a drink... it was as simple as that... just
installed the xserver-xgl package.

Now I've just got to work out why my keyboard has reverted to US... is there
something I need to do in XGL different than to normal?

What card is it and what driver do you have installed (ie do you use the
restricted driver?) ATI cards don't work nicely (if at all) with Compiz,
though much depends on the age of your card and the driver you're using.

If it's an older card and it doesn't work with the free driver then it
probably won't work at all. If it's a new card then you might want to
try using the latest driver direct from ATI (ie not the restricted
driver from Ubuntu) which should work now (as of about two days ago). If
it's a middling card (like mine) then you can either a) stick with the
free driver or b) try getting Compiz to work with a proprietary driver
and XGL - something that I've never managed :(

Hey Sean

Have you tried installing xserver-xgl?

Launch Synaptic Package Manager (System ->> Administration) and
install xserver-xgl. Now restart Xorg (ctrl+shift+backspace) and try
to enable desktop effects through appearance. This has worked for both
my grandmother and my father.

[ubuntu-uk] Compiz and ATI

2007-10-29 Thread Sean Miller
I have tried very hard to get Compiz to work with my ATI onboard graphics
card but have never succeeded.

I have therefore come to the conclusion that the two simply don't work
together, but can't really understand why... surely the thing has been
around for a sufficient time that folks could have made it compatible?

Feel I'm missing the opportunity to show off Ubuntu's wonderful new 3D
interface...
