Be reasonable. How shall that work, if you are using a host OS which
isn't supported at all? That means nobody tested it.

I used VirtualBox in the past but switched back to VMware Workstation,
because it's has a much better performance, much more reliable and much
more features, which really working.

I work the whole day with VMs - at least 4 in parallel or in other words
I virtualized my whole desktop. I used Ubuntu 9.10, then 10.04 and un-
fortunately in the moment W7, because of the support contract, but will
change in the next months.

So my recommendation would be for professional use VMware Workstation
and for non-professional use VirtualBox, if one wants a easy to use
environment.

Good choice - ESXi 4.1 has a even better performance and reliability.

Jip it is based on VT enabled hardware!, I found it easy to install, run and
manage. But then I had the virtual hardware settings for it, Make sure in
your BIOS that it is turned on and supported.

I run Virtualbox on the desktop, and manage three KVM servers running 19 VMs.
I've been doing this since Hardy. If you want an easy solution for virtual
machines on a desktop, especially VMs with a GUI, use Virtualbox. If you want
a headless solution, KVM is fine. But it is NOT as easy to use as Virtualbox,
nor does its GUI work as well. There is no fair comparison between virt-
manager and the Virtualbox GUI.

I've been using Virtualbox since Hardy came out, as it is pretty slick
and mostly pain free, but I took another look at qemu-kvm after the
recent announcement from Oracle, and armed with a little foreknowledge,
I feel happy I could switch to kvm without losing very much, if
anything. There is a gui for creating and managing VMs (virt-manager),
and I tend to want to know how to do everything I do in Virtualbox from
the command line anyway so it can be automated if necessary. I thought
it was going to be a big job to get it working, but all I had to do in
Lucid was install a few packages, add a few lines to the network config
and remove Virtualbox.

VMWare Server 2 uses a web-based admin panel. VNC inside the browser requires
a Firefox plugin, which works on i386 and amd64.

Um... why do you need to do anything with Firefox?

Last time I looked at VMWare Server on Ubuntu 10.04 (shortly after 10.04
was released) I couldn't get it working, either VMWare Server 1 or
VMWare Server 2. In the end I replaced Ubuntu with 8.04 and VMWare
Server 1.0 which works great.

I keep meaning to look at it again to see if any fixes have been released.

Hmmm... I run VirtualBox on my laptop (running 10.04 32-Bit) although it
seems to me that VMWare offers better performance/stability although
VirtualBox does the job for the odd bit of virtualisation I do on my
machine.

Eventually when I get a machine that supports Intel VT-x or AMD-V I'll
look at KVM.

I've never been able to get ESXi running, I think it's the hardware I
have which just isn't supported (and I haven't got a NAS).

I stopped using VMware a while back and have been using VirtualBox since
then, with many distros installed as virtual machines. It's great.
VirtualBox originally was not as good as VMware but it has improved so
much as to be a real mainstream product.

And it can work with vmware files too.

Good luck with VirtualBox. You can also download virtualbox VDI disk
images of linux distros from sites like http://virtualboxes.org and
http://virtualboximages.com
