Re: [ubuntu-uk] Government spending cuts should affect us!

2011-01-20 Thread Dianne Reuby
Here's the response from my MP (Rob Buckland, Swindon South,
Conservative):

Thank you for your e-mail and for all your suggestions about saving
the Government money, which are gratefully received. If you think of
any more, or know of any more examples of waste that should be looked
at, please forward them to me.

The Government had a consultation exercise last summer where they
invited members of the public to write in and contact us with such
ideas. They may have picked up on these ideas about IT, but I will
forward them to Francis Maude in the Cabinet Office for a response.
When Francis responds, I will forward his response on to you.

Dianne

I should have added that linux is greener than windows and Mac as they are
more future proof you can always go to a XFCE or LXDE if your pc is out of
date.

Would you agree with this? If so I think it's also a good selling point

My MP already answered.

Dear Andres,
Thanks for getting in touch and sending over these informative links. I
don't know the answer, but I will certainly pass this information on to the
Treasury department.
Very best wishes, and thanks again,
Zac Goldsmith

I've just posted the below to my MP. How's about if we all do something like

Hi Vernon There are millions of pounds to be save on IT by all our
government departments.
Take a quick look at any of the following. Is our present government looking
into this? If not,
why not.

1) Specsavers upgrades to Linux:

2) Gendarmerie Nationale upgrades to Ubuntu:

The current Gov have been making the right noises for Open Source for
ages now:

The days of the mega IT contracts are over, we will need you to rethink
the way you approach projects, making them smaller, off the shelf and
open source where possible.”

Clearly it doesn't hurt to lobby your local MP but use some of their own
rhetoric where possible.

George Osbourne reckoned he could save £600m using open source in a
speech about 2 years ago... The Conservative have been on this case for
sometime.

Of course, the proof is in the pudding as they say...

Cheers
