Re: [ubuntu-uk] Just ordered an iPod.. Have I just made a big mistake?
Hi, The new iPods do have some issues. Apple have implemented some kind of encryption/hash that will only allows the iPod classic and new nano to update/sync with iTunes. http://ipodminusitunes.blogspot.com/2007/09/apple-cuts-us-off.html I don't know if someone has figured out a work around yet, but its just a matter of time. Personally I'd wait until Rockbox gets released for the iPod Classic then buy one, as you then get Ogg support. Hope this helps. I'm pretty sure that, at the present time, the iPod Touch and the iPhone *aren't* supported under linux but I guess given a few months that will appear. I was at the iPod launch last week and was *that* close to buying an iPod - god knows how I resisted but I did - they are *gorgeous* :) Pete -- ubuntu-uk@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-uk https://wiki.kubuntu.org/UKTeam/

I'm thinking about getting one myself at the moment so have been reading up on the linux support: doesn't seem to be any problems using the ipod but a few of the docs I've found say you need a windows or mac machine to set up the ipod initially (formatting the disk, updating firmware etc.) Before I do buy an ipod does anyone know of any other music players with 60Gb or more of storage? Every other player I can find with that kind of storage is aiming more at video so is bigger, has worse battery life and costs more than an ipod. If it plays FLAC and/or ogg it gets bonus points. Amarok in the repos doesn't support the classics out of the box. You need to get and compile libgpod? from they're cvs, and then you might need to rebuild amarok. I haven't tried it yet, wimped out on time constraints. Might have a go tomorrow though. -Matt Daubney -- ubuntu-uk@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-uk https://wiki.kubuntu.org/UKTeam/

(I vaguely remember something about Apple changing something on the newer iPods so they didn't work on Linux but I'm pretty sure it was fixed). I was just wondering what the support in Ubuntu was like... Are there any things I need to look out for when I'm using the device on Ubuntu? As I understand it banshee supports these devices. Maybe not the version in the repo, you might need to compile one from upstream, but I'm pretty sure at UDS the Banshee guys said they supported all iPods now.
