The CompTIA Linux + is the same 2 exams as for LPIC and NCLA, the only difference is if you take anyone of the last 2 you only get that cert, if you opt for CompTIA you get the option to ask for the other 2 certs, the exams are exactly the same for all 3. CompTIA is partnered with LPI now http://certification.comptia.org/getCertified/certifications/linux.aspx Objectives and topics for each of the 2 exams here: LX0-101 http://www.comptia.org/global/Libraries/DE-Docs/CompTIA_Linux_Powered_by_LPI_LX0_101.sflb.ashx LX0-102 http://www.comptia.org/global/Libraries/DE-Docs/CompTIA_Linux_Powered_by_LPI_LX0_102.sflb.ashx If you take and successfully pass both of the above exams you get awarded CompTIA Linux +, Linux Professional Institute Certification Level 1 and Novell Certified Linux Administrator. [ubuntu-uk] Linux Courses/Certification/UK
Has anybody got info on Linux courses running in the UK? If so, could they share it, please? I'm currently going through the University websites and searching for Linux courses. My base is South Wales. UWCN (University of Wales, Newport) is the closest Uni to myself. What I want is to become Linux Certified - initially the LPIC-1 is the certification I need by the look of it. There is an Open University beginner's course. This might be a good start to getting qualified but the next enrolment is Oct 2010 according to the webpage. I'm looking at trying to find either distance learning, online learning, flexible learning or plain old evening classes or whatever it takes. Barry T Hi Barry, I would say that it's a good introductory course to using the command line within different structured areas of Ubuntu : https://shop.canonical.com/product_info.php?products_id=533 Any experience using command line is useful. It is aimed at Sys Admins. After a while the knowledge needed is extensive, so is the knowledge gained : there is no end to the learning process. With a background in networks, I wanted a structured course in order to gain experience with Linux/Unix command line, which is extensive. This course has really got me into Ubuntu. I found the book 'Ubuntu Linux' by Chris Nergus and Francois Caen to be useful in broadening and sometimes deepening the course. The Ubuntu Prof Course has more command line than the Linux equivalent LPIC-1 and is less explanatory. The two are now considered separate qualifications. Although the Ubuntu Prof Course really needs to be done in the context of providing the basis for the Server and Cloud Computing Courses. Each module ends with a quiz and the course is just completed : unless there is a surprise exam waiting for me ! The course is self-paced with a maximum of one year to access the materials on-line. One surprising aspect of the course was that i was also able to quickly understand the Windows file and command system. My hope is that the Server and Cloud Courses come up to the professional level of Cisco Certification Courses. It would be good to build learning groups around the Ubuntu Prof Course. Hope This Helps ! John -- ubuntu-uk@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-uk https://wiki.ubuntu.com/UKTeam/
Re: [ubuntu-uk] Linux Courses
The OU also allow you to use tesco clubcard points to pay for some courses (this one included) The problem i found when looking for courses/certification is that most of it is almost always outdated or unrecognised. Comptia Linux+ for example has sample questions, one of which asked what the default X server for linux desktops is: the answer they give is Xfree86, which due to licensing issues was forked to X.org around 2004, so their material is about 7 years out of date. The only certifications i personally would trust is the LPI qualifications. Having said that, LPI-1 can be passed by anyone with minimal linux admin experience, so you would need at least LPI-2 to prove your worth. Re: [ubuntu-uk] Linux Courses
Dino T. wrote: It would be both, for my CV and learning experience. I dont want to be investing time and money however on a course where it'd be worthless as a qualification. I think you're going to hit an oft-encountered problem, in that there's little intersection between the two. LPI appears to be the 'standard' Linux qualification but it doesn't require much real-world knowledge to pass. As is the nature of exams, it's relatively easy to treat it as a brain-dump, rather than a test of understanding. I gather Linux+ (the other main qualification) isn't a lot different. Even being the standard qualification, it's not really held in very high regard by the sorts of people you're looking to manage you, but might be by the people doing the hiring - recruitment, personell departments and agencies love initialisms. The usual source for getting 'real' training is to hire a consultant, really. UKUUG used to occasionally send me details of such courses, where they'd hired a consultant and were selling tickets, but they've stopped doing so since I stopped giving them money. The problem you're going to see is that for a lot of employers the first measure of how good someone is is their experience. Linux being both sorts of free, and community driven, means it's not hard to gain experience without it necessarily being *paid* experience, you just need to rent a server, stick a web page on it and not get hacked :) If I were in your position, I'd look at doing a course that does some proper training in Linux with a view to an LPI, and then getting an LPI at the end of it. If you're looking for Linuxy admin work, though, nobody is likely to hire you unless you're already running a server of some sort. The above is almost entirely based on me asking the same questinons about a year ago, but then somebody gave me a job before I had a chance to put any of it into practice :) Some of it might be different now. -- Avi -- ubuntu-uk@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-uk https://wiki.ubuntu.com/UKTeam/
