In the interests of sharing the knowledge this is what he had to say: Hi, this is something which often happens. You have a printer which is newer than the Ubuntu version which you are using. HP is releasing new versions of HPLIP (HP Linux Imaging and Printing) more or less every two months (on http://hplipopensource.com/) and we are putting the newest version before Feature Freeze into each release of Ubuntu. On http://hplipopensource.com/ you can look up whether your printer is supported by the most current HPLIP version. Independent of this, HP's printers (or their communications protocols) do not change much between generations, so often the driver for an older model works. Which printer model did you select to make your printer work? Do not report a bug on CUPS. CUPS is not supposed to deliver drivers for new printers. [ubuntu-uk] Printer problem ...
Hi there I've just installed my printer on xenial. The printer I have, is missing from the database in cups. I had to get the driver from HP. The printer is an HP Deskjet 30558 all in one. Is this something I should report as a CUPS bug, or is it an HP problem that I need to report there? Any suggestions please? Obviously my printer is working just fine now. I can not see why it has happened, why should one want a password to print something ? I realised last night that if your problem was caused by an update, it could only have been part of CUPS. Looking through Ubuntu web archives, someone with 10.04 did have a problem with a CUPS update. Not quite the same problem though. My wife is still on 10.04 and has a stand-alone printer. Also she had not done an update for a few months, so this morning I ran all the updates except for CUPS and then checked the printer before updating CUPS (4 updates) one update at a time. All done, and sadly for you, no problem. I think my final suggestion is to back up absolutely everything, and do a complete install from scratch using the current 11.10 Oneiric Ocelot. I know this is a pain, but without access to your computer, I don't think any of us are going to get any further with the problem. It just is not repeatable on other equipment. Make sure you back up the printer driver and if needs be, I'll talk you through the printer installation again. Sorry to seem unhelpful. When you said 'update', I did wonder if you meant 'upgrade' to 11.10. I can't remember where you began - I seem to think it was Natty - 11.04 when we spoke on Skype back in September. Upgrades are almost guaranteed to throw you out of kilter. If you did an upgrade, you will almost certainly need to re-install after backing up all data. I re-install every six months now using the latest release. Obviously it means re-installing your printer afresh, but first prepare to be delighted if your printer is found and installed automatically. This happens with hardware and new releases. It could be that completely un-installing and re-installing your printer (automatically) might fix the problem. I have a suspicion that this might be the case if you did an upgrade, as Ubuntu could have re-installed the printer on upgrade. There is normally no such thing as a print authentication password - passwords are only asked when you try to use something installed by another user - and an upgrade would have been carried out by 'root' as you gave permission for it to do so when you ran the upgrade if that were the case. My suggestion when all else fails: struggle on until April when 12.04 is released. DON'T upgrade to it; just re-install. When your printer is installed to your new 12.04, it will work as before. Obviously all your data will get lost in the re-installation, but you will have it all carefully backed up somewhere (won't you?). Glad to hear your health is improving. Try turning the access control setting to deny everyone, add your user to the white list and try again. Then try setting it back to allow everyone and delete your user from the list. See if either of those help with the problem. [ubuntu-uk] printer problem
After running update manager two days ago, and rebooting as instructed, my printer (Epson RX620) is no longer recognized. The system claims it is not connected (which the printer is, via an USB port, which I have changed twice). I have also tried rebooting with the printer disconnected and then switching it on, as well as rebooting with the printer connected and already switched on. It is not out of ink and it carries out its independent functions correctly. It seems to be a hell of a coincidence if the printer has gone faulty at this reboot. Has anyone any ideas or suggestions - gratefully received - ? [ubuntu-uk] printer problem
The printer in question, an HP P1505n, is connected to a router by a cable as is a laptop running Ubuntu 10.04. Several months ago the printer was set up and working using the laptop and, in addition, was working wirelessly with a desktop machine running Windows XP Pro and wirelessly with another desktop machine running Ubuntu 9.10. A few weeks ago both of the Ubuntu machines would not print files and, despite trying all the tests I can find, I have been unable to sort out how to put things right. Two days ago I set up another desktop machine running Windows XP Pro which is happily printing files wirelessly. Please, can someone suggest how to troubleshoot this problem. Ahh I see. I did notice that the Printer application had changed since the last release.
