I've seen something like this with a couple of USB devices. It turns
out to be a module had loaded for the device and hence was tying up the
device. After unloading the module I was able to attach the device to
the Virtual Box client.

Might be worth having a look to see if your printer loads any modules
when it is turned on/attached and if so, try unloading these modules and
then start Virtual Box.

That's what I did. The settings indicated that the USB port was
enabled. It appeared in the menu with the printer as seen by the VB
container. But it was greyed out and I couldn't tick the box. So
although it was seen, it wasn't actually passing the port through to the
client OS...

OK, I wasn't clear enough in my statement. You can only change the
settings for the VM when the VM isn't running or suspended IIRC.

So, when WinXP is running in the VM, you need to choose the Machine >
Close menu option, then choose "Power Off" in the screen that shows
next. After this, you should be able to change the VM settings in the
VirtualBox window - the Settings button above the list of VMs will
become enabled.

tried from the menu at the top and from the setup screen. The setup

Thanks for answering, Tony!

I got the same driver but on the Japanese site (it was the one that came
up when I googled...). The .rpm is specifically -i386...

For printers, I always go to www.linuxprinting.org.

Their entry for this printer is

http://www.openprinting.org/show_printer.cgi?recnum=Canon-
PIXMA_iP2500

It says to use 'Canon driver from Canon website'. Which is here

http://software.canon-europe.com/software/0027215.asp

Is that what you tried?

I thought that 64bit Ubuntu was Multilib?

Multilib means it has *both* 32 and 64bit libraries.

I might be wrong here but I kind of thought that was the whole point of
Multilib...

Personally I have never seen a reason to warrant using 64bit. Many of
the plugins and codecs are not built for it, neither was Flash until
very recently. And there is little benefit ti using it unless you have
more than 3GB or RAM.

If the printer is usb then why not try installing virtualbox and this
will then let you install a 32bit ubuntu guest and pass the printer
through to it. This would at least let you test it before deciding if
you want to reinstall your whole system.

No problem.

I had some issues with a KM printer before. The important bits of the
driver for CUPS, including the gzipped PPD file (this only contains
text, it isn't a binary) I was able to extract from an RPM and then
manually install in the right directory on my system. IIRC I don't think
any of the files were binaries.

The point I'm making is I would check that the packaging of the driver
for i386 is actually the important issue. You possibly just need the
*contents* of the package.

I can't help directly but a Google search
(http://www.google.co.uk/search?q=%22Canon+PIXMA+iP2500%22+Ubuntu)threw

There are other potentially interesting pages on the Google search too.

[ubuntu-uk] Printer problems

2009-07-09 Thread Wulfy
My printer died so I bought a new one. It's a Canon PIXMA iP2500. My
Kubuntu Jaunty set-up recognises the printer and correctly identifies
it, but it refuses to talk to it. Requesting a test page causes the
lights to flash but no page to appear.

I went to the Canon site and there's a driver for it. Unfortunately,
it's a Fedora driver and for i386 architecture and I'm running 64-bit
Kubuntu. Alien bombs out with a 'wrong architecture' error. I even
tried installing VirtualBox to try and run it under WinXP... I couldn't
get the USB connection to work. :@(

Does anyone have any ideas how to get this printer running or is it a
paper-weight?
