I think you have misunderstood the problem, it does not go into standby, nor am I asking it to. I ask for a normal shutdown, which it does. After shutting down the shutdown light flashes *as if* it were in standby, but it is not. The problem is that something (possibly a hardware fault) is causing it to think it is in standby when it is not. Colin I had something similar with a desktop after I messed with the ACPI options. Has your installation/upgrade to 11.10 introduced some ACPI settings without your knowledge? I don't think it is that, I have not knowingly changed anything. As an experiment I booted off a 10.10 live CD (and I did not see this problem at all back then) and was able to see the problem on shutting down the live CD session. In fact I have discovered another symptom which I think confirms that it must be hardware. If I leave it disconnected from the mains for a few hours and then plug it in it immediately enters the fault mode with the standby light flashing and the power button non-functional. I have to leave it plugged in for ten or fifteen minutes (presumably something is warming up) and then if I power cycle it is ok. I think it has to be hardware, I suppose the first thing to do is to try and find an old power supply and swap that over. Colin Curiously, I experienced the same problem exactly, just twice, on a Samsung N150 Netbook with 11.10. The only way out was to unplug the battery for ten seconds. Nothing else got any response. OK I have an Acer Revo which nobody is talking about, but these hang on 10.04 and 10.10 (and presumably later, but upgrades haven't had the problem reoccurring). This problem was caused by the wifi driver. The resolution was to add blacklist rt2800pci to /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf I have no idea if that will solve your problem, but as with my issue, it might not be a shutdown bug. -- Regards, Andy -- ubuntu-uk@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-uk https://wiki.ubuntu.com/UKTeam/

I've had this problem a lot on my desktop PC - I hear the disk drive stop, but I need to press and hold the on/off button to switch it off. Sometimes I get a full shutdown. [ubuntu-uk] Problem when powering off - suspend light flashing
I have a problem that I am pretty sure is nothing to do with Ubuntu but I hope somebody here may be able to help. On one of my desktop PCs (running Ubuntu 11.10), about 50% of the time when I shutdown it does a normal power down but then the standby light flashes as if it were in standby. It is not actually in standby and does not respond to pressing the power button. To recover I have to pull the power lead out for about 10 seconds and then it (usually) is ok after plugging back in, and will do a normal power up after pressing the power button. I assume it is a hardware problem, presumably either the mother board or the power supply but I have not got a spare of either so I can't try swapping them out. Any thoughts anyone?
