the same image opened in RawStudio, Shotwell and Image Viewer -

Image Viewer shows the right image.

I have an EOS 5D and raw images work fine with Shotwell for that camera
so the 60D may have introduced a new version of the CR2 format. It won't
solve your immediate problem but I suggest that you send a description
of your problem to the Shotwell mailing list [1] as they will be very
keen to hear of any problem and solve it for the upcoming 0.8 if they
can.

From your image, Shotwell and RawStudio seem to misunderstand the data
in similar ways so the actual problem is probably with the underlying
raw library (libraw). If this is the case, the Shotwell developers will
be able to identify the problem and report it to the libraw devs.

Cool! Apart from the raw issues, what part of your workflow can you
currently not do with Ubuntu?

Hi Bruno,

No problem with doing that and thanks - I was going to do it this
afternoon when I was more awake (I’m not really a morning person).

I have uploaded an archive with the file I used in sample image I posted
earlier. Also in the archive is a JPG of the same file (I used to camera
to save in RAW and JPG at the same time so there is a comparison between
the two). The file is located at
http://marsters.co.uk/shotwell/eos60d-samples.tar.gz

As you suggested in your previous post, I believe it is related to the
libraw library and since Canon had to release a new version of the
Windows RAW codec to support the 60D I really do think it could be a
compatibility problem with a slightly changed file format (or the files
being nearly twice the size of the 1000D ones I had used in the past).

The versions I am using are

Ubuntu - 10.10
Shotwell - 0.7.2-1~maverick1
Libraw-dev - 0.9.1-1

Thanks again for everyone help. I will do what I can to help get the
support (test builds etc if necessary) but in the meantime I will do my
edits for the photography course I am doing on Windows.

Anton et al,

I couldn't agree more. I too use Bibble 5 Pro and find it excellent.
Interestingly, I note that with the release of version 5.2 RC1, they
claim to have improved the support for the Canon 60D. As I don't shoot
with such a beast, I can't comment on how good or otherwise it handles
the RAW output from the 60D with either the production version or
release candidate.

Their site, (www.bibblelabs.com) has a wealth of information and examples.

It might be worth checking out their free fully functioning demo
version. (Essentially a 14 day trial). At £130, I don't think that it is
overpriced, when I consider what gets spent on other pieces of kit!

Just my 2 cents worth!

It looks like support for the 60D was added in libraw 0.11.2, which you
can get here: http://www.libraw.org/download#stable

You'll have to compile from source but it uses the classic GNU autotools
steps so it is straightforward. Download the LibRaw-0.12.0.tar.gz file
from the web site and then do the following:

tar zxvf LibRaw-0.12.0.tar.gz
cd LibRaw-0.12.0
./configure
make
sudo make install
sudo ldconfig

(the last step may not be necessary but it doesn't harm)

It will install the updated library in /usr/local so that it doesn't
overwrite the system one. If you want to remove it, go back to the
directory where you unpacked it and do:

sudo make uninstall

The next step is to ask the nice MOTU to upgrade libraw for Natty :-)

Cheers,

Bruno

Thanks for the ppa (and the heads up about the version upgrade) - I
installed this (as well as manually building it afterwards) but still
get the same effect, so guess it isn't libraw causing the problems now.

I have tried the trial version of Bibble which works fine but would like
to try some of the products in the repos first (when I fix this little
issue).

Hopefully I can look at some other things tomorrow. Shame it wasn't
libraw as this did seem to be a promising lead.

Have you tried ufraw, either standalone or there is a gimp importer I
believe. Search for ufraw in synaptic package manager. I have not
actually tried them personally so that is about as far as I can go.

Thanks for the reply. I actually meant I tried ufraw not ucraw but looking into
