Mine's currently a Huawei Ascend Y300-100. I got it because it was a
cheap option, with a lot of internal memory (I thought). In practice, I
haven't found a way or rooting it, so the useable memory now is less
than I achieved on my rooted Samsung Galaxy. Memory handling is awful
on Android systems. I think you need to do a factory reset every six
months. Also, I've now gone very sour towards Android since I bought an
Android Tablet, and got so frustrated with the way it wanted me to work
that I gave it the grand kids.

I expect my next phone will be an Ubuntu Phone. It will depend on what
apps I can get for it. The only two Android apps I depend on are the
free satnav app, and the Virgin phone app that lets me make WiFi calls
from anywhere in the world via my landline based system. I used to use
Callcentric for voip calls, at two-cents a minute. These calls are now
free courtesy of Virginmedia! Does the Ubuntu phone currently run a
compatibility layer to support Android apps?

I'm not planning upgrading anytime soon, but I'm going to need to know
what it can do before I get one.

Regards,Barry.

I quite agree with you about Android phones! I have a Sony Xperia E3
that has 8GB internal storage with 1GB free. I also have a Windows
phone, with 8GB internal storage that with very similar apps installed
has 3GB free! How can that be?

As long as the phone can access Owncloud calendar, tasks and Contacts,
then it'll do for me!

T-Mobile Vary-Text PAYG. Basic but very good battery life and Blackberry

watching the Ubuntu phone with interest, but need to convince She Who

I'd probably be much the same with my Samsung Galaxy S2, but it was driving me
up the wall with battery life (2 or 3 charges a day) and unreliability
(unexpected reboots). I spent a good while trying to decide what to get and not
really seeing anything worth getting. In the end it finally gave up the ghost
after about 3 years (very dissapointing life span to my mind). My new phone
arrived on the day the new Ubuntu phone was announced ironically. I ended up
with a LG G3 in the end. It worked out cheaper over the potential 2 year
contract to go SIM only and buy the handset seperately. This was cheaper than a
lesser spec phone on contract too. I could have saved a bit buying a cheaper
handset only, but nothing quite matched up to my spec requirements for much
less than the G3 which is available at a surprisingly good price given the
spec.

I got my son a Huawei Y550 which, bar a very small 4G memory is a surprisingly
nice phone - especially for the £35 I paid for it! A bit more memory and I may
have gone for one myself.

Re: [ubuntu-uk] SOT - What phone do you use?

2015-03-06 Thread TT Mooney
So. I have a LOT of phones. For my 'testing'. The list is below, but the end
result is that I'm using an iPhone 6 now (mostly for the vertical in-house IT
stack that Apple provides, and testing my new IOS app). I 'upgraded' from a
Nexus 5 running CM. My favourite phone of all time is still the Nokia N900. The
most useful phone I've ever had is a dual-SIM Moto G running CM.

The list / impressions:
iPhone 6 / Unavoidable, unfortunately
Nexus 5 (CM) / Useful, but not flashy. Shitty camera and poor battery life with
Google services installed.
Nexus 4 (Ubuntu) / Ubuntu is much better than it used to be, but without
CardDAV and CalDAV support it's not really ready for me.
Nexus S (CM) / Solid workhorse phone that I give to visitors. I won't miss it
if it goes walkies.
Moto G Dual SIM (CM) / Great phone. Great battery life. Shitty camera.
Unfortunately now with a cracked screen.
Blackberry Z10 / I really have no idea why I bought this.
Jolla / I loved the N900 so much that I bought, then sold, the N9. I think the
Jolla will probably suffer the same fate. I just don't like the swipe interface.

That is a lot of phones. Maybe it's time for an EBay session.

Me too, looking forward to receiving my Ubuntu Phone. Til then on an
Android phone made by Star (Chinese) but the screen is starting to fail
and is flickering, so need to get a new phone, Ubuntu Phone seems the
obvious choice, although I also have a cheap Firefox OS phone which is
not bad but lacks a few features. I had also considered a Jolla phone
but did not much like the look of the way the OS works. I realise Ubuntu
Phone is different to Android but it is at least a known OS in regards
to desktop use.

Unfortunately I'm not in a position to be able to buy one for a couple
of years. :-(
What I have is a Sony Xperia E3, which for some reason has only 1GB free
of 8, and which Sony don't seem keen to update to Lollipop (which would
enable me to move many more apps to the MicroSD card), also a Nokia
Lumia 635, which has 3GB free of 8

Motorola Moto G, cheap, unlocked, 4G and backed by Google for a couple of
years, although the promised upgrade to Android 5 hasn't materialised yet.
I would *like* an Ubuntu phone, ideally something like the Edge, which I
suppose might appear in the next couple of years.
