Hmmm ... interesting. I just tried switching back to lightdm after
grabbing the latest updates. It's still broken on my system. I'll keep
trying from time to time.

I think Trusty is a big improvement in many ways. It also seems a whole
lot faster than Saucy.

Thanks all of you. startx didn't help - x was already running. The
xorg log shows no problems. The problem is in, or associated with,
lightdm, but stopping and restarting it made no difference. Currently,
I have altered the default desktop manager to gdm. This works, but I
really don't like it! Lightdm running unity really is nice. gdm is
not as easy to use and is much slower.

I guess I'll just have to try lightdm after every likely update until
it works again. I booted into my paralell installation of 13.10 this
morning to get access to Trusty and edit the desktop manager. It is
so slow compared with Trusty. I'd forgotten about that.

Might be worth re-installing lightdm, possibly after purging to remove
config filesjust a thought.

It isn't obsolete. Trusty isn't out yet. I don't think it's even
formally in beta. It is not finished, and as such, anyone running it
should /expect/ to have problems.

If you get a login prompt login first (obviously)

startx - this command starts the 'X-server' that powers your GUI, this is
possibly redundant if 14.04 is using Mir (I hope not as these things should
be tested in a development release first!)

This should work, yes.

The first thing I'd do, though, would be to see if there was an
xorg.conf file in /etc/X11. If there is, remove it, or better still,
temporarily move it elsewhere or rename it. As of recent X.org
versions, for a few years now, it should start and run fine with no
xorg.conf - removing this is an easy way of getting around problems
with proprietary drivers, for instance.

H interesting I had to create a xorg.conf file to get my laptop to
display correctly on HDTV

And no, Mir will not be on by default in 14.04! But of course the OP
/might/ have enabled it.

None of this will correct the error that has left you hanging in limbo,
but might get you a usable system!

If you are just getting a flashing cursor in the top left corner of the
screen I know of no-way to recover the system, when it has happened to
me I've always ended up re-installing.

As I stated I'm not a expert and if anyone has any other hints or tips
or correct an error I have made I would be pleased to hear :) I've
waited all day before replying to your question in the hope someone with
more knowledge than myself would jump in first!
