Re: [ubuntu-uk] Ubuntu UK Site Rebranding - Mockups

2010-06-05 Thread Liam Wilson
Just my tuppence;

If the podcast team have decided on a (quite frankly, awesome) design, then
would it not be a good idea to make the Ubuntu-UK website coherent with
that?
I mean, currently, the Podcast is run by members of the UK team, and is
featured prominently on the first page of the website, but when it is
clicked on, it brings you to a completely different website, and to me,
personally, it just feels a bit messy to have 2
completely different designs.

Of course, there will be elements of the website that will change, such as
the colour scheme, and content, etc, but elements such as the navigation
buttons and general layout of pages should, in my opinion, stay the same.

But that's just my thoughts.

As far as I know, not entirely sure but a few of the Ubuntu Drupal team
do help with that website project. As I understand it though Ubuntu
Drupal was here before the Ubuntu Website and as such I'm guessing that
they contribute their work over to them in some form or another.

Actually just scrap the above, I've checked their bzr branch at
lp:~ubuntu-website-community/ubuntu-website/light-drupal-theme and
there's seems to have been no revisions yet but then again that branch
was only made 10 days ago. I have just however branched kuzeko's branch

Unfortunately my web-page screenshot tool isn't working but you can

I wouldn't rely on that.  IE is still very picky about such things,
and however much we might hope that people would be using Open Source

Therefore, let's stick to web safe fonts

Actually this works fine in IE8, and if a particular font is what's
wanted I see no reason not to use it. Of course we should make sure it
still looks ok in browsers that don't support @font-face though!

Sorry for any confusion,  I was saying that the Ubuntu Website team
has no Drupal themes that I could find,  the one that I linked was an
HTML theme.  The site available at http://staging.profarius.com/ is
indeed a Drupal site.  The one at
http://98.142.210.218/light-base-theme/ on a VPS of mine is simply bog
standard HTML.

I vote 'no' to a London skyline.

Why, because it's London?

In that case, can you suggest some other imagery that is distinctively British?

Personally I am not sure that any other British city is iconic enough
to be internationally recognisable.

Stonehenge? (Not very modern or forwards-looking!) Olympics stadium?
(Not finished yet.)

None of the UK mountains are particularly recognisable - I doubt I
could tell Snowdon or Ben Nevis or anything from any other random
mountain in temperate climes. Loch Ness? The Lake District?

No, because I see it all over the place, and I don't think that it
looks very nice. Also, it represents only a small area of the UK. If a
city sky-scape is required, how about having a selection of different
cities and rotate them? People may not recognise them by sight, but
they could be watermarked. Then when others view the sight, they can
learn what Manchester, Bristol or Edinburgh looks like. You get the
idea?

Don't let me put you off. I know what I don't like, but find it much

I don't really see much point in reinventing the wheel here. Luckily
the Ubuntu Drupal team has setup a lovely theme and a few extra modules
for Drupal which can design a wonderful website. Here's a mockup of the
site http://img2.pict.com/3e/8d/0b/3600091/0/1275580649.jpg .

The Ubuntu Header module could be replaced with any module which allows
to rotation of images and as such there could be such landmarks as Big
Ben, Stadiwm y Mileniwm, the houses of the parliaments and assemblies
of the UK and whatever else takes your fancy.

Re: [ubuntu-uk] Ubuntu UK Site Rebranding - Mockups

2010-06-03 Thread Alan Pope
The podcast team were sent a mockup for the podcast site by a listener
a while ago. In general we liked it, and the designer (without
prompting) went off and created an initial go at the html, css and so
on. I quite like it. He even redesigned our podcast logo, which is
pretty cool.

http://popey.com/~alan/podcast_mockup.png

http://popey.com/~alan/UUPC/

We haven't switched to it yet because we (podcast team) are in our
usual state of deliberating whether to switch to a completely
different website engine for the podcast. This happens when wordpress
or podpress (that we currently use) breaks in some way, we get miffed
and decide to throw it out. Some work has been done to create a
replacement site engine, but that's not complete, and I dont know if
it ever will be. So we never put the above in place because we didn't
want to duplicate effort.

I have asked Andrew (who created the above mockup) if he'd be
interested in doing a mockup for the main site too. So that would be
cool to throw in with all the other mockups people have come up with!
Seems people are really keen to update our web presence! Great stuff.

Cheers,
Al.

Hi Guys

Mockup 1 is in a different league to the rest. Far, far better.

I am inclined to agree that the London skyline does suggest big business,

Keep the layout but change the image to something less indicative of one

I would be inclined to use large crowd images rather than skylines, for

I don't really see much point in reinventing the wheel here. Luckily
the Ubuntu Drupal team has setup a lovely theme and a few extra modules
for Drupal which can design a wonderful website. Here's a mockup of the
 site http://img2.pict.com/3e/8d/0b/3600091/0/1275580649.jpg .

That is actually better then option #1 IMHO. It looks less business like.

The Ubuntu Header module could be replaced with any module which allows
to rotation of images and as such there could be such landmarks as Big
Ben, Stadiwm y Mileniwm, the houses of the parliaments and assemblies
of the UK and whatever else takes your fancy.

The suggestion earlier, of 'community' type photos would be better.
Pictures from the release parties, trip to the Science Museum, etc. Others
could be added as the come along, like the proposed geeknic or the RAT
trip.

structure and planning is needed especially with the amount of ideas flying
around at the moment.

The classic mistake of web design/development has also happened here and the

later. Having a fair amount of experience in the design and building of
sites myself this is undoubtedly going to lead to inefficiency during the
build and due to the high volume of input here and the fluid nature of it, I
can see the final result delivering a very confused message in terms of
design and the general mechanics of the site.

I am by no way criticising the ideas so far, they have been great! I am
merely suggesting that if we first define a clear purpose of what the site
needs to achieve then they styling will come together later and look a lot
better. Some measurable objectives are desperately needed too in order to
convert all the energy from everyone into constructing a fantastic site :o)

Wow, what an active discussion - brilliant! I'll try and summarise my
thoughts in a single, coherent mail.

Ade Goodyer is correct in pointing out that we need to establish what
we're trying to present before we decide how we're going to present it.
However, from a purely aesthetic perspective:

Michael H:Mockup #1 is the only one I like. Very slick, but
maybe too much space used on the cityscape? A rotating
image is a must.
Popey/Andrew: Ooh, shiny. Love this one, but shouldn't the navbar be
orange for community? [0] Could the white space
beside the logo be utilised?
Chris Swift: Nice, but needs some content to see how well it works.
Also scope for a rotating image here.

Of the three, I think Andrew's is my favourite at the moment, the other
two are tied. Daubers' comment about the pictures being of the LoCo
doing stuff sounds like a great idea. Geeknic, OggCamp, Ubuntu Hour,
UDS are all good candidates here.

As for the question of looking too commercial - I don't see a slick look
and feel to a community web site as being a problem. Bear in mind, for
a lot of people who aren't familiar with our community and our products,
Free equates to Poor quality. We don't want to reinforce that view
with an amateurish web site. An entity's web site it its brand and ours
should be slick and professional, without feeling impersonal.

Cheers,

JT

[0] http://www.markshuttleworth.com/archives/308 - The use of Aubergine
indicates Commercial involvement of one form or another, while Orange is
a signal of community engagement. The Forums will use the Orange
elements more strongly, and a formal product brochure, with descriptions
of supporting services, would use more of the Aubergine.
