You might be better of doing a factory reset and reconfiguring it from scratch.
When I first bought my netgear router I couldn't get it to connect to my
broadband connection using the correct password. After speaking to the
excellent customer service adviser at plus.net, he said that doing a factory
reset on even a brand new router was sometimes the only way to get it to work
correctly. They didn't supply the router, I had bought it elsewhere, but he was
correct in my case

Tyler et al.,

I don't know if that was for me but I think you opened a whole new can
of worms for me. I tried looking for what you mention in my router and I
found some historical settings on my router for certain IP ports that a
friend had configured some time ago (emule among other things!). I've
added my iP to the list but still disconnects itself at high speeds. I
think I need to carefully read the router page and find out what all
those acronyms mean: ssid, UpnP, MAC, TCP, UDP,...

Thanks for all your help! I think I'll take if from here, don't want to
keep bothering you.

I think this needs to be said before this thread goes off on a tangent
based on misconceptions...

Traffic shaping done by Virgin (or any ISP) would happen to the data
en route between your router and its destination (the web server or
BitTorrent peer). It can affect the rate at which other people behind
your router can download things if one PC is flooding the single
connection to the ISP. However there is no way that traffic shaping is
responsible for wifi dropping between devices and the router as
described by the OP - it's a completely different thing.

At the moment my money is on the router not enjoying the large numbers
of connections that BitTorrent can generate. This would be easy to
test by simply downloading a large file from the web on the netbook
and seeing if it has the same effect. If it still does then I'd say
you either have wifi congestion, and should try changing channels as
someone else suggested, or a faulty router.

Still, just guesses.

Matthew

My setup is a WRT54G2. If I try to torrent a distro, my Missus can't access
the internet at all. I have always assumed Virgin where "traffic shaping",
basically stopping people downloading torrents (most of which are probably
illegal!) and swamping the network.

This also happens if I download a torrent in Windows, so it is not just a
linux thing.

I have also had a problem recently with my DG834GT, which suddenly
started dropping connections. I traced this to the channel that I was
using. The router defaults to channel 6. I changed to channel 11 and the
problem went away. I think that one of my neighbours must have bought a

Re: [ubuntu-uk] netbook wifi traffic disconnects all

2011-01-19 Thread andres
Ok it was on it's side, but I put it vertical and I have the same
problem.
My model is WGR614v6 and the firmware is up to date.
I only need one torrent (trisquelgnulinux.iso) for it to drop
connection: my wife downloaded some tv series the other day with no
problem (via wifi). I recall using the other ubuntu desktop to download
more distros with no problems either. So I guess the router can be
discarded as the cause of the problem?

I'm not really a heavy wifi user: internet radio+ w7 laptop+ ubuntu
netbook. I notice that the disconnection occurs when I am in the range
of 0.5 MB/s. I have the basic 10Mb package.

Thanks for the channel shaping info: so this means that my wireless is
forcing it's way to get the most band and then the router disconnects
everybody to stop 1 guy hoarding the whole network?

I had read about traffic polution.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wi-Fi#Channel_pollution
but that doesn't seem the answer. My wife's wifi seems to do fine.

Try:
iwconfig wlan0 rate 1M
(replace wlan0 with your interface's name)
man iwconfig for more options.

A
###
thanks for that!
$iwconfig
wlan0 IEEE 802.11bg ESSID:"Kamehouse"
  Mode:Managed Frequency:2.462 GHz Access Point:
00:14:6C:7C:48:3C
  Bit Rate=1 Mb/s Tx-Power=20 dBm
  Retry long limit:7 RTS thr:off Fragment thr:off
  Power Management:off
  Link Quality=53/70 Signal level=-57 dBm
Rx invalid nwid:0 Rx invalid crypt:0 Rx invalid frag:0
  Tx excessive retries:0 Invalid misc:0 Missed beacon:0

but when trying to change the rate to auto or 0.5Mb/s it says;
$ iwconfig wlan rate 0.5M
Error for wireless request "Set Bit Rate" (8B20) :
SET failed on device wlan ; Operation not permitted.

Does the above mean that I have a 1Mb/s limit? and I cannot change it?
sorry, did a quick search could get nothing.
funny enough I did
$ iwconfig wlan0
wlan0 IEEE 802.11bg ESSID:"Kamehouse"
  Mode:Managed Frequency:2.462 GHz Access Point:
00:14:6C:7C:48:3C
  Bit Rate=54 Mb/s Tx-Power=20 dBm
  Retry long limit:7 RTS thr:off Fragment thr:off
  Power Management:off
  Link Quality=65/70 Signal level=-45 dBm
Rx invalid nwid:0 Rx invalid crypt:0 Rx invalid frag:0
  Tx excessive retries:0 Invalid misc:0 Missed beacon:0

and now said 54Mb/s! but did the comand again and it went back down to
1Mb/s

does this mean that multiple bit rates is not supported?

have I missed anyone?

You've just diagnosed the problem. It has nothing to do with the
wireless, and has to do with the kernel parameters for maximum TCP and
UDP ports (really, NAT settings) or TCP/UDP timeout.

On DD-WRT v24, this is set on the Administration tab, Management subtab,
bottom of page, "IP Filter Settings (adjust these for P2P". Exactly what
to use depends on your hardware (RAM, really) and firmware.

Tyler

Traffic shaping put simply is just a way of profiling the type of traffic
across a link. ISPs will mark (like a tag) the packets going through and
then it will apply restrictions maybe on an outgoing interface or even at
another router to restrict the traffic if its considered a lower priority.

So for example your bit torrent traffic may arrive at your ISP router and
they mark it as a low priority, if the link becomes congested they may even
drop some packets in favour of other traffic marked higher priority.

Is her computer not hard wired? It makes sense that the router
overheats more when the wi-fi is being heavily used ... the transmitter
takes quite a bit of power. I would try a hard-wired connection. If
this cures the problem either a new router, or an ice-bucket seems to be

My wife downloads stuff on her w7 laptop with just slowing down traffic on

I was able to use torrent without conflicting other kits by reduccing the

I'd really like to know if you could cap the wifi speed for everything

Been following this thread with the greatest of puzzlement. I have
Virgin with a cable-modem with a cable router attached, and a wi-fi
transmitter one one port of that. Strange config, I know, but I have my
reasons ... Never experienced anything like that though. First thing
I'd try would be to drop an ethernet cable into the laptop and see if
that makes a difference.

My bet would be on the router more than anything else.

If you eventually decide the problem might be the modem, you have to
test with nothing but one computer connected directly to the modem,
after turning off the power to the modem for at least ten seconds and
re-starting. If the problem shows with that configuration, you phone
Virgin and they do a remote test and send an engineer. They are VERY
good like that.

2011-01-18 Thread Steve Fisher
I get exactly the same problems on Virgin, two words:

Traffic Shaping

Particularly bad on torrrents, nobody else can use the Internet. I
normally set up cron jobs.

When it fails have a look at the leds on the router. Is the Internet
light still lit and is the ADSL light still lit?

Re: [ubuntu-uk] netbook wifi traffic disconnects all

2011-01-18 Thread Byte Soup
Is it possible to swap your device out for a spare router? Im not sure about
virgin media as I think you have the cable modem and then the wireless
router connected to that, or is it all in one unit? It sure sounds like the
router rather than your netbook. What happens is your run large downloads on
other machines using the connection?

My first guess it that your router is overheating. Next time you have a
problem, very carefully check the temperature of you router - check the
temperature on the router before you do any downloading, so you have
something to compare when you have a problem.

If temperature is not the problem, then you may just be overloading your
router or have a faulty router.

Do you have the same problem if you are downloading whilst connected via
ethernet cable to the router?

There maybe a way to limit your download speed when connected over wireless,
but have not looked into that. Any one have ideas?

Thank you.

[ubuntu-uk] netbook wifi traffic disconnects all

2011-01-17 Thread andres
Hello,

I've been looking for this for some time but I think I'm not doing the
right word search in google. I don't even know how to report it if it's
a bug... might not even be an OS problem so sorry.

I have an ubuntu netbook 10.04 acer aspire one zg5 (same as AO110 I
think but with SSD).
I get yelled at because I am downloading files (podcasts, software,
distros, ...) this for some reason disconnects my wifi but also all
other kit that is connected to the router. Then my wifi recovers
connection and slowly all the other stuff in the house gets connected
(w7, itouch, internet radio). But if I continue downloading it will
disconnect everything again. I've been able to see that this happens at
when I reach a certain download speed.

I use a netgear routher and my broadband is virgin.

Any pointers are welcome!
