Tyler et al., I don't know if that was for me but I think you opened a whole new can of worms for me. I tried looking for what you mention in my router and I found some historical settings on my router for certain IP ports that a friend had configured some time ago (emule among other things!). I've added my iP to the list but still disconnects itself at high speeds. I think I need to carefully read the router page and find out what all those acronyms mean: ssid, UpnP, MAC, TCP, UDP,... I think this needs to be said before this thread goes off on a tangent based on misconceptions... Traffic shaping done by Virgin (or any ISP) would happen to the data en route between your router and its destination (the web server or BitTorrent peer). It can affect the rate at which other people behind your router can download things if one PC is flooding the single connection to the ISP. However there is no way that traffic shaping is responsible for wifi dropping between devices and the router as described by the OP - it's a completely different thing. At the moment my money is on the router not enjoying the large numbers of connections that BitTorrent can generate. This would be easy to test by simply downloading a large file from the web on the netbook and seeing if it has the same effect. If it still does then I'd say you either have wifi congestion, and should try changing channels as someone else suggested, or a faulty router. Still, just guesses. Re: [ubuntu-uk] netbook wifi traffic disconnects all
Ok it was on it's side, but I put it vertical and I have the same problem. My model is WGR614v6 and the firmware is up to date. I only need one torrent (trisquelgnulinux.iso) for it to drop connection: my wife downloaded some tv series the other day with no problem (via wifi). I recall using the other ubuntu desktop to download more distros with no problems either. So I guess the router can be discarded as the cause of the problem? I'm not really a heavy wifi user: internet radio+ w7 laptop+ ubuntu netbook. I notice that the disconnection occurs when I am in the range of 0.5 MB/s. I have the basic 10Mb package. Thanks for the channel shaping info: so this means that my wireless is forcing it's way to get the most band and then the router disconnects everybody to stop 1 guy hoarding the whole network? I had read about traffic polution. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wi-Fi#Channel_pollution but that doesn't seem the answer. My wife's wifi seems to do fine. Try: iwconfig wlan0 rate 1M (replace wlan0 with your interface's name) man iwconfig for more options. A ### thanks for that! $iwconfig wlan0 IEEE 802.11bg ESSID:"Kamehouse" Mode:Managed Frequency:2.462 GHz Access Point: 00:14:6C:7C:48:3C Bit Rate=1 Mb/s Tx-Power=20 dBm Retry long limit:7 RTS thr:off Fragment thr:off Power Management:off Link Quality=53/70 Signal level=-57 dBm Rx invalid nwid:0 Rx invalid crypt:0 Rx invalid frag:0 Tx excessive retries:0 Invalid misc:0 Missed beacon:0 but when trying to change the rate to auto or 0.5Mb/s it says; $ iwconfig wlan rate 0.5M Error for wireless request "Set Bit Rate" (8B20) : SET failed on device wlan ; Operation not permitted. Does the above mean that I have a 1Mb/s limit? and I cannot change it? sorry, did a quick search could get nothing. funny enough I did $ iwconfig wlan0 wlan0 IEEE 802.11bg ESSID:"Kamehouse" Mode:Managed Frequency:2.462 GHz Access Point: 00:14:6C:7C:48:3C Bit Rate=54 Mb/s Tx-Power=20 dBm Retry long limit:7 RTS thr:off Fragment thr:off Power Management:off Link Quality=65/70 Signal level=-45 dBm Rx invalid nwid:0 Rx invalid crypt:0 Rx invalid frag:0 Tx excessive retries:0 Invalid misc:0 Missed beacon:0 and now said 54Mb/s! but did the comand again and it went back down to 1Mb/s does this mean that multiple bit rates is not supported? have I missed anyone? ## I've a Netgear DG834gt Router with custom firmware, It does the same! With me It's a problem with the way the router handles ports, It only happens when i'm downloading many torrents, causes the routers wireless not respond. My router stands vertically with a 4inch gap all around it in a room with no central heating on (it's around 16c in the room) so don't think it's not an over heating problem. It sounds more like a problem with the drivers of the wireless, Can't remember where I read it but there's something about the number of ports the router can open and the speed the connections are recycled causes the drivers to effectively "crash" if it happens too quickly. As I said, it only happens with me If I'm downloading multiple torrents and they all try to open more than 256 ports each.. -- Regards Bill Cumming -- Correo enviado desde mi ubuntu netbook -- ubuntu-uk@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-uk https://wiki.ubuntu.com/UKTeam/

You've just diagnosed the problem. It has nothing to do with the wireless, and has to do with the kernel parameters for maximum TCP and UDP ports (really, NAT settings) or TCP/UDP timeout. On DD-WRT v24, this is set on the Administration tab, Management subtab, bottom of page, "IP Filter Settings (adjust these for P2P". Strange config, I know, but I have my reasons ... Never experienced anything like that though. First thing I'd try would be to drop an ethernet cable into the laptop and see if that makes a difference. My bet would be on the router more than anything else. If you eventually decide the problem might be the modem, you have to test with nothing but one computer connected directly to the modem, after turning off the power to the modem for at least ten seconds and re-starting. If the problem shows with that configuration, you phone Virgin and they do a remote test and send an engineer. They are VERY good like that. It sure sounds like the router rather than your netbook. What happens is your run large downloads on other machines using the connection? -Mark On 17 January 2011 22:38, andres wrote: > Hello, > > I've been looking for this for some time but I think I'm not doing the > right word search in google. Next time you have a problem, very carefully check the temperature of you router - check the temperature on the router before you do any downloading, so you have something to compare when you have a problem. If temperature is not the problem, then you may just be overloading your router or have a faulty router. Do you have the same problem if you are downloading whilst connected via ethernet cable to the router? There maybe a way to limit your download speed when connected over wireless, but have not looked into that. Any one have ideas? [ubuntu-uk] netbook wifi traffic disconnects all
Hello, I've been looking for this for some time but I think I'm not doing the right word search in google. I don't even know how to report it if it's a bug... might not even be an OS problem so sorry. I have an ubuntu netbook 10.04 acer aspire one zg5 (same as AO110 I think but with SSD). I get yelled at because I am downloading files (podcasts, software, distros, ...) this for some reason disconnects my wifi but also all other kit that is connected to the router. Then my wifi recovers connection and slowly all the other stuff in the house gets connected (w7, itouch, internet radio). But if I continue downloading it will disconnect everything again. I've been able to see that this happens at when I reach a certain download speed. I use a netgear routher and my broadband is virgin. Any pointers are welcome!
