I'm using XFCE, and I've got a "Settings -> Keyboard Settings ->
Layouts" configuration dialog available. I'll investigate that
further.

It may well be the case that I'm re-using old stuff without realizing
that a better way is now available. That's happened to me before.

It works for me in Thunderbird! But I set the compose key to the menu
key using System->Preferences->Keyboard->Layout Options. I'm using Gnome.

I wasn't aware of this! For years I've been using

Option  "XkbOptions""compose:rwin"

in the keyboard stanza of xorg.conf (and its pre-xorg equivalent). Is
there any reason not to do it that way if I'm used to those
keybindings?

In any case, for a while now (a year?) on Ubuntu, my rwin compose key
has not worked in Thunderbird, and I tried the AltGr combinations
above. Does anyone know why Thunderbird interferes with composing
characters, and how to make it cooperate?

Thanks,

This works for me under both Hardy and Dapper.

The trick is to remember the ; (semicolon) first. Ie. hold down AltGr,
press semicolon (;), release AltGr, then press the letter you want.

Hmmm... one wrinkle is I'm using Kubuntu rather than Ubuntu... I
thought, perhaps, it's a difference at that level but I just tried it in
console () and it works there, too.

I don't know why it's not working for you. I found this almost by
accident as I was looking to find a way to type accented characters and
specials like "æ", "ð" and "þ"...

Along with all the suggestions that have been given have you the French
dictionary installed? I know it is not the complete answer but it is
very helpful in lots of cases.

Ah, cheers Tony. I was indeed missing the semi-colon. Years of ingrained
Windows behaviour blinded me to the instructions.

Thanks to Alan too for introducing me to the locale command, I am indeed
using LANG=en_GB.UTF-8. And I can now get ê ě. Marvellous stuff. A four
year itch thoroughly scratched.

Did you type the semi-colon as well? Just to be clear, it's hold down

AltGr+e gives e here too, however

Try AltGr+Shift+', then keeping AltGr down but releasing shift, press e.. I

What do you get as the first line from the locale command?

This does not work for me and hasn't in the 4 years or so that I've been
using Linux (Fedora and Ubuntu).

AltGr+e gives e
Ctrl+Alt+e gives e

This is true for Open Office. It is also true for Text Editor and
Thunderbird except that Ctrl+Alt produces no text output.

Seeing as we're on this topic I'd be grateful for any suggestions as
it's a problem that's bugged me for years but never managed to track down.

My keyboard layout is Generic 105-key (Intl) PC according to
System->Preferences->Keyboard.

I have just tried Tony's "Compose key" approach which does actually work
for me (thank you Tony!). It would be nice to get AltGr working for the
more common accents but "Compose" is clearly more robust.

I know you've had some suggestions already, but, if you are using Gnome,
another way is to define a 'compose' key. You can do that in
System->Keyboard->Layout Options.

I've defined mine as the menu key.

You can then construct accented characters by holding down the compose
key and typing e ', to get é, o ^ to get ô, etc. The combinations are
all fairly intuitive.

Regards,
Tony.

Which keyboard layout do you have now?

I have the United Kingdom gb Generic 105-key (Intl) PC and I can get
(almost) all the European language characters.

Try pressing ; e which should give é. If it does, the other
accents are on the punctuation keys around the right end of the keyboard.

Use like you use the shift key...

";" gives acute
"'" gives circumflex
"#" gives grave
"[" gives umlaut
"]" gives tilde
"=" gives cedila

There are (lots) more but you can find them yourself... :@)
