[ubuntu-uk] update manager

2011-11-24 Thread Norman Silverstone
I am just trying to find my way around 11.10 and have noticed that there
appears to be an option missing, the option to have updates downloaded
in the background. Thus, when I respond to the cue that there are
updates available I have to wait for them to be downloaded before they
can be installed.

Have I missed something?

You can ask for security updates to be automatically downloaded in
Update Manager Settings Updates When there are security updates
... but that does not seem to be available for other updates.

There is an application called unattended-upgrades in apt, although it
doesn't seem to be in the Software Centre.

It may have been a deliberate change. For example if a background upgrade was
being applied to pulseaudio and firefox, for the duration of the upgrade to
that app you would be unable to use it at all - firefox goes haywire part way
through an update

Is there anything in the release notes about it?

[ubuntu-uk] update manager

2011-11-11 Thread Norman Silverstone
I am using Ubuntu 11.04 and, today, ran Update Manager. The usual window
appeared with a list of updates and I selected install updates. I
entered my password and a small window appeared which, amongst other
things, said what looked like Downloaded 0 B of 1 B. After a little
while, another window appeared and I was asked to insert a CD/DVD'Ubuntu
11.10_Oneiric Ocelot_-Release i386 (20111012)' and given the choice to
Cancel or Continue. As I have no idea what this is all about I chose
Cancel and the window for Update Manager re-appeared with the list of
packages to be installed and any attempt to install updates starts the
cycle over again.

Could someone please tell me what I need to do to be able to install the
updates.

In Update Manager, click Settings and on the Ubuntu Software tab make
sure that the CDROM is *not* checked. Though it seems a bit odd that
it was looking for the 11.10 CD when you are on 11.04.

I know what you did, something similar happened to me. You plugged in
the 11.10 disk while running 11.04 and allowed it to auto-run and it
has started trying to update. Have a look in /etc/apt/sources.list
and you will find a line that needs to be commented out referring to
the CD. Then do the apt-get update again

[ubuntu-uk] Update manager showing base files

Hi,

I see my update manager this morning showing a update to base-files, when
going to install these are listed as uncertified. It seems odd how the
changes doesnt list here but on other packages they do, my connection is
fine. Im a bit suspicious

*Changes tab shows*

Changes for the versions:
5.0.0ubuntu20.10.04.1
5.0.0ubuntu20.10.04.2

Failed to download the list of changes.
Please check your Internet connection.

*Description tab shows*

This package contains the basic filesystem hierarchy of a Debian system, and
several important miscellaneous files, such as /etc/debian_version,
/etc/host.conf, /etc/issue, /etc/motd, /etc/profile, /etc/nsswitch.conf, and
others, and the text of several common licenses in use on Debian systems.

I had this before when running update-manager -d. It seemed to work
once I'd reloaded the sources a couple of times, then ran
update-manager -d again. IIRC it took a couple of seconds for the box
to appear saying Karmic was available. Probably also worth checking if
you're using the gb mirror or the main archive; not sure if it makes
any difference but I've often found problems magically disappear when
I use the plain archive.ubuntu.com.

 From Ubuntu site...

To upgrade from Ubuntu 9.04 on a desktop system, press Alt+F2
 and
type in update-manager -d (without the quotes) into the
 command box.
Update Manager should open up and tell you: New distribution
 release
'9.10' is available. Click Upgrade and follow the on-screen
 instructions.

 Best,

 Sean

Ah, that worked, just upgrading now. I am dreading this though, my
laptop didnt like 8.10 from 8.04, so I am just hoping its going to
 like this upgrade.

 Thank you.

 John.

Do remember 9.10 is still beta!

Hi Matt,

thank you for reminding me. I did remember. After all that, the upgrade
went ok, and I am writing this from Karmic. The Other Software updates
didnt work, at least its showing they are all disabled on upgrade.
Problem is, I cant remember what software I added. Funny thing is
though, some of the things I did add seem to be working. How do i find
out what software I added in the Software sources.

John.

Not sure what the 'Other Software updates' are but, any software beyond
the basic install shouldn’t have been removed.

[ubuntu-uk] Update Manager hanging -- how to terminate it?

2009-10-02 Thread Alex Birchall
Hello,

My Ubuntu Hardy Heron 8.04 server alerted me to 20 updates this morning
and I responded by installing them, but now 60 minutes later Update
Manager is still hanging. How can I terminate it? I've tried
right-clicking on the icon in the task bar and choosing Close, but this
seems to have no effect.

I should be most grateful for any tips.

Best regards,

Alex

I'm a little confused as to why you have a server running a GUI, but the easiest
way to kill any GUI program is to switch to the window, then hit alt+f2 to bring
up the run dialog, type in xkill (Without the quotes) and then click on the
window that's hanging
