Apparently only by an earlier version of Gutenprint, removed in 11.10. I
also read it never worked anyway. It installs ok but then the light flashes
on the printer then nothing.

The printer appears to be supported by gutenprint:
https://www.openprinting.org/printer/Canon/Canon-PIXMA-iP1200

These drivers can be frustrating to set up and there's no guarantee unless
someone else has done it but there's also no reason to assume that it
shouldn't.

I was lucky enough to be given a PC today, also a P4 but with 2Gb RAM. It's
running Lubuntu like a dream. I'll tinker with the old on in my own time.
However I now find their printer isn't supported on Linux at all! A Canon
Pixma iP1200. That is abysmal to be honest. I thought those days were long
since gone. I'm really not sure what to do for them now.

I did run memtest but only for one full cycle. Also Windows XP was running

You don't actually need to re-install, just install lubuntu-desktop
and then select it from the logon screen.

Run memtest for a few hours first though, if that fails then nothing will work.

I have just looked back and realised this is the thread about the old
PC, I don't think we know yet how much RAM it has, crashing could be
caused by not enough. If less than 1GB then no hope of running Unity
I think, ideally at least 2GB.

Do you mean that the machine is absolutely frozen? No mouse,
Ctrl+Alt+F1 does nothing, etc?
Have a look in /var/log/syslog to see if there are any messages before
the freeze.
If nothing there then it could well be a hardware issue, overheating
possibly, or PSU for example. Try booting into memtest and leave it
running for a few hours and see if it freezes then or shows errors.

Re: [ubuntu-uk] Constant crashing

2014-05-31 Thread Gareth France
I have many Thunderbird issues. The latest which is present in 14.04 is the
little triangles which tell you how many instances are running on the
launcher don't work. The second or third one pops up when you compose a
message but they don't go away right away when that second or third window
closes. It's only when you start clicking on things it catches up. For a
few releases now the indicator turns blue to say there are unread messages
and remains that way even when the messages have been deleted.
As does the count in the launcher. To clear them you have to open the
messaging menu and click on the account that claims too still have mail.

I've been getting this kind of behaviour with Thunderbird for a while.
It's very noticeable on my rather slow netbook, but it happens too, on
my up-to-the-mark quad core desktop, although for a much shorter time.
It seems to be something to do with gmail downloading sometimes
thousands of e-mails into 'all-mail' boxes (although I can't be sure
this is where the problem starts. I have two imap accounts that use
g-mail as the carrier. Other accounts such as gmx don't seem to have
this problem. On the netbook, sometimes Thunderbird greys out for up to
a minute before resuming. Sometimes while I'm typing an e-mail, the
cursor freezes for a few seconds.

Anyone else notice this? The problem has been around for months now,
and was there in 12.04 through later releases including Utopic (which
I'm using now).

Regards,Barry.

Sorry for the late reply guys. For some reason as yet unexplained
Thunderbird decided to tell me I had unread emails but wouldn't display
them! It's not running slowly at all, it just freezes at random points
forcing you to power-cycle. I will be taking another look at it later on
today. I may try a re-install with one of the other flavours, we'll see.

Hi,

On that age of machine I would consider lubuntu or xubuntu or even
crunchbang (not a *buntu but Debian based lightweight Openbox os, hope I
don't break any list rules straying from *buntus)

Also look at how much RAM the machine has, it can be picked up for a few
pounds now !

OMG! That's really old by today's standards. No wonder it feels slow.
Everything will be; memory, disk, dma.

As a guess I'd take a long hard look at the hard drive... Run a few
sanity checks on it.

If it never had a memory upgrade, you could be struggling with lack of
memory and excessive use of swap. Take a note of the memory size and
the size of the swap partition. You might consider one of the
lightweight *buntus as a better starting point. I have a Windows 2000
box that had been upgraded both in memory and motherboard. Performance
is well below average with Ubuntu, but with Lubuntu (I think that's what
I put on it), it performs really well.
