Oooh thanks - that looks pretty cool :-)

This little extension that I found out about this morning is pretty
useful: http://www.openoffice.org/issues/show_bug.cgi?id=26397

It's nice and simple. Clicking on a button birngs up a graphical
interface with checkboxes for three different formats - Open Ofice,
Microsoft Office and PDF. Simply exmplain which is which, and they get
all three saved by default.

Yeah, that's pretty irritating.

With users I've converted over, I've always ended up setting OO to
write to MS file format by default. It's a nuisance, but it helps
avoid people whinging when they can't open their latest masterpiece in
MS Word...

UCL - As I've previously mentioned in another discussion on this list,
next (academic) year I'm going to put a double-page feature on Ubuntu
in the student newspaper. Not sure exactly when it will be, probably a
slow news day when I have to fill up space, but when it gets written
I'll be sure to post a link to the website so everyone can have a
look.

I;m not sure if they've updated firefox on the network yet, it's
disgraceful. I think very few people know it's on there, they just
assume there's no choice and stick to the MS products. When we're
asked for essays it's in 'formats compatible with the College computer
network, such as MS Word documents' (paraphrase), rather than
suggesting .odt and so on. Grr.

Ah well. Keep me/us updated with the DVD campaign!

Trust me, when I stop slacking off during my gap-year I will be doing
exactly that! Great to hear about your uni though, where abouts is
that!? Would be good to keep in mind when it comes to pleading the
case myself next year!

They should replace those messages about not being supported with ones
saying "The university doesn't support this software but there's a
great community that will support you: " or words to that
effect. Might get more people involved and also let them use the
software at its best :D

Hi,

Great idea and kudos to you for getting it all done! Have you thought about
campaigning to get your union/university moving towards completely
open-source software? I know my uni computers all have openoffice and
firefox installed, but numerous warnings appear about the software being
unsupported!

Hi all,

I'm not sure I've mentioned this on the list before but the disc I've
been working on to promote Free Culture (incl. free software) is
available to download!

It's an awesome disc (if I do say so myself!) and the plan is to
distribute it to journalists and MPs (+ friends at uni) to help spread
the word about free culture and all the amazing stuff that's going on.
I'm also making it available to download so that any body can get
their hands on it and share it with friends, family, colleagues etc!

If you want to find out more visit
http://questionsplease.org/freeme/the-campaign-blog/ where there's
more info about the disc being available for download and also you can
just look around the site and check it out.

Feedback is most definitely welcome! If you do download it and it gets
used at any events etc then it would be cool to have pictures/video to
share on the blog :D

Cheers, I hope you find it interesting :D

Jon

p.s. sorry I don't contribute so much to this list!
