Re: [ubuntu-uk] Gutsy, first reports!
big snip On feisty I was using the restricted driver with Beryl (and then plain old Compiz), so I don't know why it's such a different experience on Gutsy. But I am very impressed so far :) Upgrade went smoothly but somewhat slowly. I suppose lots of people after the same files as me. Very pleased so far and, to my delight, my scanner now works. Must check my camera. Norman -- ubuntu-uk@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-uk https://wiki.kubuntu.org/UKTeam/

Norman As previously suggested, raise a Answer[0] or Bug report[1] on Launchpad - providing as much detail as possible, including Make/Model. If usb attached, the output of lsusb -vvv and dmesg (from the console) with the device attached. You can save the output easier if you: $ lsusb -vvv lsusb_output.txt $ dmesg dmesg_output.txt [0] https://answers.edge.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+addquestion [1] https://bugs.edge.launchpad.net/bugs/+filebug Hopefully we can then look to get this device working, and possibly form a bug report that will help get out of the box support into Hardy Heron. Dave Thinking it would improve my experience, I installed the restricted ATI driver on my laptop. Restarted the system and...no wobbly windows. No desktop effects. The setting was set to 'None' in Preferences-Appearance, and clicking either of the others resulted in the error message 'Compiz extension not available'. Suffice to say I've learned my lesson about proprietary drivers, as I've gone back to the free driver and desktop effects are sorted! Regards javad Installed it this evening from the Live CD on an oldish Athlon XP 1900 with 256MB memory. Installation was very slow (I expected that, I am upgrading the memory just haven't got any to hand right now). Once it installed it boots fine and seems fairly responsive on the desktop. Couple of niggly problems though. When booting from the Live CD in either normal mode or choosing the OEM mode it won't display properly on this particular machine (it's got an ATI Video card, I think it's a Radeon 9200SE) and it seems to go into 640x400 (it has a big black border on the bottom of the screen!). Safe mode video option works fine though. Splash screen doesn't work when booting up. I have seen this before, I think in Feisty, can't remember what I did to fix it. I'm going to give it a go on my main desktop tomorrow. So far I am quite impressed, hope the problems I have experienced aren't the norm. Rob Did a fresh install of Gutsy on a Thinkpad X31 from the Live CD, everything went fine and only took 20mins. First problem I noticed is the boot and shutdown splash screen don't show -- same as Rob, though they show fine when my external display is connected (tv at same resolution). Also the computer seems to take a little longer to boot than Feisty did, nothing to bother about though. Aside from that everything seems to be running smoothly, hopefully it'll still be the same once I get all my favourite programs installed. And here's hoping it works as well on my other Thinkpad. Oh, and another thing I noticed, desktop effects won't work, they did work (sort of) in Feisty with a few bugs. Could this be to do with the ATI drivers? Hi Javad, On Thu, 2007-10-18 at 14:49 +, STONE COLD wrote: those of you who have now installed 7.10 what are your thoughts? How has it improved from fiesty? I've been using Gutsy on a few laptops and a desktop for a few months now. Personally I'm finding certain specific features making me happy. Here's my top 3. * Tomboy sync. I use Tomboy Notes to note my to-do list, ideas, documentation, personal notes and kids christmas lists :) I have more than one computer, and previously Tomboy was out of sync on each machine. The version of Tomboy with Gutsy has a few sync options and whilst they aren't trivial to setup (ssh sync requires ssh keys to be setup between machines and the 'server' where the store is [not a problem for me, I already use this, but could be an issue for new users]) it's awesome. Means I can sit down at any machine and know my notes are up to date. * Better battery life. I am noticing battery life on my laptop is much improved. Part of this is down to the excellent tool Powertop from intel which you can install from the repository. It indicates which programs are causing the CPU to wake up frequently, and also offers suggestions for improving battery life. Really good stuff. * Encrypted filesystems during install. I love this idea. Using the alternate CD (not the live one) it's possible to install Gutsy into an encrypted volume on disk which is accessed using a passphrase entered at bootup. Love it. I will be re-installing my laptop to take advantage of this feature! Well I've been using Gutsy for a while now so I will have to reinstall to take advantage of this - what's the performance hit (there must be one I would have thought) and do you know what kind of encryption it uses??
