Actually, the old default was still there and I was able to replace it
while it was still upgrading my system. So, not really a problem, just
annoying!

On the plus side, I have noticed that the fonts are looking much
better on my LCD monitor (and I thought they looked fine before).

belated answer:
the torrent files were on the canonical download site, and torrents
started working, albeit slowly, at that point

I assume that it doesn't do this with a custom wallpaper. There's not
really any way to know whether a user likes the current default, so
it upgrades that for everyone. However it does remove the old default
wallpaper, which isn't ideal.

If you like a particular default one, then you can copy the file
and choose the copied version as your wallpaper, and then that should
be preserved for the next upgrade.

Thanks,

James

I always use the default and every upgrade it always replaces it with
the new default wallpaper, which sort of makes sense, but is highly
annoying nonetheless. I've not tried it with a customised wallpaper
I'm afraid.

I'm glad it went smootly for you. We're you using the default wallpaper
before upgrading, or does it force you to use the new default whatever
you are using?

I've just finished upgrading my work machine. All seemed relatively
painless. The upgrade-manager insisted on 'upgrading' my wallpaper as
normal and image preview icons in nautilus look a bit odd, otherwise
everything seems to work.

Impressed, it all looks quite shiny. The new firefox might take some
getting used to though!

While you are exactly right, and the bandwidth you could get to ubuntu
machines slowed down release work, the point is moot now, as it's
officially released.

Enjoy Hardy everyone.

It is generally a Bad Idea to start downloading it before it is
officially announced. They put the isos on the main mirrors so that the
other mirrors around the world can start downloading them. If you start
downloading before the announcement, it takes longer for the necessary
number of mirrors to get a copy because you steal their bandwidth, and
therefore delay the release announcement.

I can't see any announcements stating this on the ubuntu-announce
mailing list, on IRC or on the official site.

What makes you say it is released? Or were you just referring to the
face that a full upgrade from the RC is 99.9% likely to be the final
release?
