My PC is connected to a philips 234EL monitor via HDMI. Sound and
video both go over the cable. So if I want I can use the speakers
built into the screen. I happen to have a separate sound card
connected to decent speakers so I don't use this feature, but it works
out of the box on my machine.

Here's a picture of the sound setting thing. I have highlighted the
HDMI out and pressed test. It just works.

Have you tried it? It might just work (heh), but otherwise it will be the
TV that's the problem. You might have to switch to monitor out on some
machines - that's usually Function-F7. I believe it's been supported for a
while now.

I tried this on Monday. Giving a presentation from LibreOffice
Impress, from my own laptop; discovered the venue's big screen only
had HDMI in. I didn't even know my cheapo MSI laptop had an HDMI port!

Plugged it in, rebooted, on it came. Went into monitor settings,
unticked mirror screens, it set the right resolution automagically.

In LibreOffice, I set the big screen as my presentation screen,
internal one as the presenter's screen, and off I went.

Absolutely no config or setup required. Plug in and go.

However, as with any external screen, I suggest you turn the computer
off, plug in the screen, then turn it back on. Not for electronic
safety (although that is no bad idea) but it means that the BIOS and
the OS can detect the monitor when it is connected and on at system
startup.

I've got a HP Laptop with Intel graphics, I connect that to a 42 tv
without any problems to watch iplayer or movies etc.

As has been suggested elsewhere in the thread, I do have to switch off
the laptop off before connecting the HDMI cable, then restart to get the
laptop tv to work at the correct resolutions.

If I don't do that, my display does get corrupted.

I probably should have mentioned that my machine has an Intel display,
too. It's the onboard GPU of a Core i3.

I can't tell you. It was a silent, unanimated presentation and the
flatscreen TV's speakers were off (AFAIK, anyway).

There might be some work with ALSA but it could be as simple as enabling
the channel in alsamixer if it's been booted plugged in.
