Re: [ubuntu-uk] Renaming The Home Folder
Years ago, a user complained that Win 98 wasn't booting properly - in the C: root I found a user-created folder called 'scary stuff' with the .bat and config.sys files in it ;) Paula On 27/07/10 09:14, Alan Pope wrote: I had a user rename c:\windows once. This has proven to be a little counter-productive since, when I'm transferring files between them using Filezilla or Nautilus, it is easy to confuse which pane is displaying the laptop's contents and which the desktop's. The logical solution would appear to be to rename the home folder on one of the machines so that the path is clearly distinguishable. However, I note that Nautilus has the "rename" option greyed out for the home folder. To me this suggests that renaming it might not be a good idea or, at least, needs to be done in conjunction with other actions. My concern is that renaming the home folder will screw up the configuration of numerous applications. Is it best just to live with things as they are or is there a clean method of renaming the home folder? Thanks Nige Use a symlink, so that you have two home folders on one machine, but data only stored once. hth -- ubuntu-uk@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-uk https://wiki.ubuntu.com/UKTeam/

I would also recommend using dropbox. It can sync over a LAN and up to the cloud. There are lots of scripts and other applications, and configuration details that expect the current user to have a home directory in /home/username With work you might be able to find them all but it probably isn't worth the effort. How about just using something like Ubuntu One to synchronise the bits you need syncing? The idea being you don't need to keep copying files between machines at all as they are always in-sync. HTH Al -- The Open Learning Centre http://www.theopenlearningcentre.com Hi Nige, I have a similar problem, syncing two laptops to a desktop. I created two subfolders under 'Documents' on the desktop named 'synapse' and 'neuron' (the names of my laptops). Then I use unison http://www.cis.upenn.edu/~bcpierce/unison/ (this uses rsync) to keep everything updated via ssh with passwordless login. I have set it up to sync the 'Documents' folders on the laptops to each of the subfolders on the desktop. I have then written a short bash script to automate the process. You just have to remember to sync before you change any documents, otherwise your changes get lost. I don't see why you couldn't sync your home folders in the same way. It works well for me, but I'm sure there are other ways of doing it. Let me know if you want to know any more of the details involved. I've *not* tried it. It might be better trying it in a VM or some other installation you don't mind trashing. As a minimum, you could create another user account on your machine and rename the home folder for that user. I don't know if it will copy the files from the previous folder for you either - you may have to do that yourself afterwards. If you still want to do it, open System > Administration > Users and Groups. Click the advanced button, enter your password to unlock the next screen, and on the third tab (sorry, I don't know the label on it, my machine is displaying things in Welsh) there is an entry for your home folder. Try changing this and clicking OK... Cofion/Regards, Neil. -- ubuntu-uk@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-uk https://wiki.ubuntu.com/UKTeam/
