When you get to that screen, dont tick anything, just click forward.
Grub is installed in the EFI partition on your pendrive, so you dont
want to mess with it.

Though the update has stopped gdm starting on boot! Anyone know where
the config file for that is stored on 9.10? I was assuming init.d/
but it isnt there!

OK, thanks

In fact I was stuck anyway, I had been moving my keyboard and mouse
between the joggler and my pc as the joggler updated, and having got
to the screen asking where it should install grub it would not
recognise the keyboard again.
Reading the latest stuff on the wiki I think I will just start again
with the latest image there. At least that is no big deal.

Hi Colin,

/dev/mmcblk0 refers tonthe internal memory. I wouldn't stick grub there
because it'll interfere with the default install.

The internal mmc looks like this in fdisk

Device Boot Start End Blocks Id System
 /dev/mmcblk0p1 * 11954 62520 ef EFI (FAT-12/16/32)
 /dev/mmcblk0p219559768 250048 83 Linux

Thanks for the tip Popey.
I am enjoying the standard UI at the moment, I am sure that it will wear
off over time though. Mainly due to me wanting a web browser on the

So has mine. I setup my usb stick and it boots into UNR fine. I then did
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get upgrade
and it collected 200MB or thereabouts and spent a couple of hours
installing the updates, it is now asking me which partitions to
install grub on, with a choice of /dev/sda and /dev/mmcblk0 and I
don't know which (or both) to select. Are those the two partitions on
the stick or is one the internal flash in the joggler?

Any help would be much appreciated.

Am I right to assume that if I were to update the kernel through
update-manager, and i then copied those kernel files onto the FAT16

Ive managed to get ubuntu 9.10 to boot, but startx gives me a
permissions error saying it can't write some files, fstab only has a
proc line and a "UUID=[long string of device id chars] / ext3
errors=remount-ro 1" line, should this be commented out and replaced

to try a 9.10 disk to see if that boots off my stick, if that works i
shall then experiment with 10.04 again, any help further would be

It would be preferable (for me) to be able to do a stock install and
then know what needs to be changed (options tweaked, programs
downloaded/compiled) and do that myself rather than untar a massive
ball of binaries over the filesystem. It works but it's an horrific
way to build a bootable system.

It would also make it easier to figure out how to make this
maintainable ongoing.

Cheers,
Al.

This guide was great thanks, I'm just at the stage where you have to
add the files from the archives you linked to. I have decided, for no
real reason, to use 10.04, are the archives compatible with this
version of ubuntu, or am I going to have to change some details?

Any advice would be appreciated.

I've just bought one from the O2 website.
I spoke to a member of staff in my local store and they said that they
also had no stock (Blackpool).

By the way loving the work that has gone here on this week, you guys are

Looking through the alsa-info output, we see that the Sigmatel
STAC9202 chip is being used, with Vendor Id: 0x83847632. The dmesg
output does not show something significant.

Looking at the source code of the Linux kernel and the sound subsystem
(Alsa), we notice:

2c11f955 (Tobin Davis 2007-05-17 09:36:34 +0200 5095)

which means that the 'quirk' code for this specific chipset was added
in 2007 and did not change since. Thus, there might be something in
this newer chipset that needs an update in Alsa.

You mention that you need to remove the 'last' line in alsa-base.conf.
Is it this line?
   # Power down HDA controllers after 10 idle seconds
   options snd-hda-intel power_save=10 power_save_controller=N

If so, then the driver is not able to wake up properly from the power
saving state.

So, what if you want to give back to the Linux community :-), you may
1. Get a full alsa-info.sh output in a text file (the one at the wiki
does not have the first lines, which include the alsa driver version,
etc).
2. Send an e-mail to the alsa-devel mailing list at
http://www.alsa-project.org/main/index.php/Mailing-lists
saying something like

===
Hi All,
I have an O2 Joggler with the alsa-info output file attached in this message.
The sound does not work unless I remove the following line from
/etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf

# Power down HDA controllers after 10 idle seconds
options snd-hda-intel power_save=10 power_save_controller=N

I believe this means that the chipset is not able to wake up from
power saving, and what I get is crackling sound.

What can be done so that this issue is fixed (the device works with
power saving)?

The device came with a special version of Ubuntu Linux 8.04, and the
source code (included Alsa) is available at
http://lists.gpl-violations.org/pipermail/legal/2009-December/001755.html

Thanks!

Since you are doing a big investment in this device, it's good to push
it further and get it to work out of the box in newer versions of
Linux.

   - Sound, does not work out of the box but will work once the last line
   has been removed from /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf

However in order to fix the crackling you must plug the USB stick into a
host computer, and change the name of
/etc/lib/KERNALVERSION/kernal/drivers/acpi/processor.ko on the second
partition.

I have added it to the wiki and the Etherpad :)

Re: [ubuntu-uk] The tablet everyone is talking about..

2010-04-08 Thread Dan Fish

I got UNR 9.10 working OK last night.

http://www.ossmedicine.org/joggler1.jpg

I'm going to reboot when I get home to make sure it wasn't a fluke and then I'm
going to use the EFI mentioned here

http://www.joggler.info/forum/viewtopic.php?f=36&t=145&start=10

which allows booting without a keyboard. The USB stick problems seem to relate
to brand and previous usage (ie maximum read-write cycles)

Dan
..My USB drive appears to have commited technology suicide, having problems
booting, so attempted to re-create the partition table and that failed too -.-

Will be getting another one today somepoint.

Meanwhile, anyone else got UNR working?

You are not affecting the Joggler itself at all.

Just booting it from an external stick.

The base OS and bootloader are still on the system. Take your stick out
and you have a Joggler back.

You are not affecting the Joggler itself at all.

Just booting it from an external stick.

The base OS and bootloader are still on the system. Take your stick out
and you have a Joggler back.

Great device though :)

That could be due to some higher capacity flash drives using SDHC under
the covers which the Joggler may not support. I know that my Cruzer 16GB
flash drive doesn't work with everything (in particular, it doesn't work
with Windows XP).

Re: [ubuntu-uk] The tablet everyone is talking about..

2010-04-08 Thread Daniel Case
Alright :)

I'l put it here and on the etherpad, i mainly followed this guild:
http://magician.gforums.de/wiki/index.php5?title=UNE_Installation
but a lot of it is wrong, and one of its packages is packaged badly, so iv
repackaged them both and attatched:

1: plug your **USB stick into another linux machine, format it so that you
have an ms-dos partition table, 100MB fat16 partition, and an ext3
partition, this can be done in a program like gparted.

*Its important that you do this outside of the installer as otherwise, it
will fail.*

** I used a 4GB stick, and i have heard that it fails on much larger sticks
(16GB) a way to maybe resolve this would be to make the ext3 partition below
4GB, but i havent tested as i do not have a larger memory stick on me

2: write the Ubuntu Netbook Remix (here:
http://www.ubuntu.com/GetUbuntu/download-netbook) to a disk (it failed when
i tried to do it through a VM) and boot from it, once you are at the boot
menu, select "Install Ubuntu Netbook Remix" (2nd option)

3: Once it has loaded the installer, insert the USB stick you partitioned
earlier and choose your settings as normal until you get to the partitioning
page. Make sure you click "Specify Partitions Manually"

4: Click on the ext3 partition on the USB drive, and make sure it is used as
/, but do not format it, then ensure that if you are installing on a
computer with linux already on it that it is not using the original swap
space, in order to stop it you just need to select the swap partition, and
set it to "Do Not Use"

4: Click next, it should give you a warning about not using the FAT16
partition, and a warning about the swap space, you can safely disregard both
of these.

5: Now that the partitioning is done, keep clicking next until you get to
the final screen (where it says install and gives you a rundown) look
through the settings and ensure nothing is being formatted, then click
"Advance" and untick the "Install bootloader" box.

6: Click install, and go get some coffee because its going to take a while
(mine took just under 2 hours, reminds me of the good ol' windows 98
installation days)

7: Download the following two files:
http://www.newforumnetwork.com/files/joggler_partition1_fat16.tar.bz2
http://www.newforumnetwork.com/files/joggler_partition2_ext3.tar.gz

8: Put the USB stick into your linux machine (dont boot from it yet) and
extract each archive into the correct partition, make sure they dont go into
a folder, when you extract the second archive it will ask about overwriting,
just select yes to all.

9: Go into the second partition on the USB stick and find: /etc/fstab
Once you have found it, comment everything out apart from your ext3
partition, and the /proc line.

10: Insert the USB stick into a USB hub with a keyboard and boot up, give it
a minute or two and you should see some terminal
code with an error, this is because the Joggler doesn't save the time, so it
thinks its somewhere in 1980, simple fix, drop down
to the maintinance shell using ctrl+D and run fsck, then reboot using
"shutdown -r now"

And thats it, your 10-step guide to booting UNR :D

I'll be getting one of these little beauties later in the week.

Is it possible to backup the default OS, in case the Ubuntu install goes
wrong?

I got a similar email (I ordered online just after I saw Popey's
email), and it arrived today. Just setting up the default install now,
then I think I might flash it with UNE...

I have sshd running but can't ssh in just now. Maybe a config thing or
perhaps missing some other component.

Hey all --

Long time listener, first time caller.

With my obcession for small Linux devices (man the N800 was COOL, but
not terribly useful) I couldn't resist the Joggler. Went down to Oxford
Street -- apparently they sold out in store on 2 April, and may have
more in on Thursday. Online seems the best option for stock availability.

I assume they have a backlog, or are about to release an updated
version, but who can complain at £49? I think it will make a fine
kitchen computer, and a friend is going to try it as a GCompris tablet
for his daughter.

I popped in the O2 store in Torquay today and had a quick 30 second play
with it. I really am impressed with the touch screen. I haven't picked
one up yet but I am tempted. I've just got to figure out how to run the
thing in a car (assuming it's possible). It's a shame it hasn't got
some sort of video output too as I know someone who is looking for a
basic web surfing PC and I bet this would have been ideal.

The Camden Town shop was so busy I gave up, went home and ordered it
online. Now I just have to work out what to do with it. I'll probably
try to use it out of the box to start with but installing a cut-down
version of Lucid with the Moblin desktop on top sounds tempting.
Alternatively, I wonder if it'd be a good device to run Moovida[1] on.

Bugger!

Here I am half way up a mountain in Greece thinking, "Hmm! This sounds
like a good hacking project!" Then I hit the link to O2's site only to
receive the message, "Thanks for visiting the O2 Online Shop.
Unfortunately, we are unable to sell to countries outside the UK."

Methinks it is time to fire up LogMeIn and speak to them via Cambridge!

Hmm... I'm very interested. Has anyone on the list actually got one of
these yet?

I'm wondering what sort of power requirements it has (I gather it
doesn't run off a battery which is a shame) but I'm interested to know
if it has a fairly standard power supply (such as 12 volt PSU or laptop
PSU)?

What I'm thinking is maybe something like this would make a great in-car
media player (either for playing MP3s or XVid movies to keep the kids
quiet on long journeys) at least if it can be powered off a cigarette
lighter socket (or alternatively an inverter).

Sounds like a good excuse to pop down to the O2 store later on.

The atom in it should be more than capable of doing most things, and
512 ram is hardly limiting, ive yet to see something of this spec and
ability so cheap.

It would be a great remote desktop client, or little media server
using the USB port

Humour was intended.

Cheers,

No, not that Apple thing, but the O2 Joggler.

50 quid (for 14 days from 2nd April) and free delivery gets you a 7
inch touch screen device with:-

1.3GHz Intel Atom CPU
1GB storage
512MB RAM
Wired ethernet
Broadcom b/g/n WiFi
Audio + headphone jack
USB port

http://shop.o2.co.uk/joggler

It seems to come with a cut-down version of Ubuntu Hardy and can be
flashed to run 'proper' Ubuntu or Netbook Edition if you wish.

I thought it might be useful as a mythtv frontend for my desk or
bedside, or maybe even an IP telephone when paired with a suitable USB
headset.

Some links I've gathered:-
