This isn't completely true. Beryl runs very well on my laptop + intel
915 onboard graphics card. No noticeable slow down whatsoever, unless
I use the blur plugin (which really isn't worth using IMHO).

Ditto that. Same sort of setup here, I915 chip, and it works fine.

Yes it is the via drivers both the community developed ones and the via
developed ones do not support all of the 3 D stuff that are required
for Beryl, compiz etc. We just have to be patient.

The 3D desktop is really cool and once you turn down some of the more
extreme features it becomes a positive improvement to productivity.

Your big problem is the VIA chipset. There is a big black hole/blind
spot, Linux has little or no support for Chrome graphics cards.

My laptop is new and there is no drivers what so ever. If you are
running a older kit you may be in luck. You should be able to get the
2D drivers working with a lot luck and work you may be able to get the
3D working. I'm not sure if this will be enough for Beryl to work, as
I gave up on getting the drivers for my laptop I didn't investigate
any further. I'm stuck with the standard Vesta drivers!

If your motherboard has a AGP slot your in luck and a cheap card
should do the job nicely.

you need a good card, you are lookinig for Beryl
( http://www.beryl-project.org/ ). it's a lot better than the cube, it's
rammed with bits and peices that look fantastic ;)

does have a few issues though - but that's the fun of it - you can get
involved in developing it - like all linux stuff - no matter what level
you are... from the wishlist to giving offerings...

you're the navigator (or at least 'a' navigator(!)

good luck!

You don't need a high performance nVidia or ATI card to run
Beryl/Compiz, by any means. IIRC, the first demo videos/development of
Compiz were done on an intel onboard graphics card.
