The package lists are updated via a daily cron job, so this shouldn't happen
in most cases. However, I think there might still be a very small window of
opportunity for it to happen for somebody who gets notified that updates are
available, ignores it and then leaves their machine unpowered for a couple
of weeks, then comes back and immediately tries to update before the package
lists have had a chance to be updated again.

Looking through the packages you had problems with, and taking
gnome-control-center as an example - this was updated twice in a single day
very recently.

There are loads of updates every day for Intrepid at the moment as it nears
release. You always have to apt-get update before installing/upgrading any
packages.

If its been 15 mins since I last did an update I'll do it again at the
moment.

The newbie way to do updates is through the GUI, it should take care of
updating the package lists before downloading packages. Using apt-get on
the command line assumes you will use it how you want to, e.g. not updating
the package lists unless you want to.

Fair point, Al... fair point...

But would the same sort of issues not arise with a production one? I
guess the rate of updates would be less, but surely there's no reason
why somebody might not ignore the "updates available" icon for a
couple of weeks to find that there's been 3 security patches or
whatever and the one they originally were told they needed had been
superceded?

Or does the process work differently with alphas and betas?

There's a compelling argument that "newbies" should _not_ run the
development version of Ubuntu.

Ah, okay... so my problem was ignoring the updates for a few days
then? Must admit that I have been busy and my internet connection is
not that quick so I've tended to update every few days rather than
every day!

Thanks for clearing that up - is there an argument that the update
process should be more clever than that, as I'd guess it'd put off
"newbies"... ?

Yes, but 8.04 is just so conservative in comparison...

I sort of understand why they do these conservative LTS releases, but
I find them stifling... and, to be honest, I've not really had any
great issues with 8.10 up to now. In fact, it's been a lot easier
than previous alphas and betas that I've installed which I've driven
Paul (Sladen) mad with banal questions about on IM... only issue I had
was that the display didn't work on my laptop so I Googled and had to
disable something or other (too long ago, forget - openglx or
something similar, perhaps?) but not causing me an issue since.

Those 404 errors look quite normal for packages that are being updated
multiple times in rapid succession. What has happened is that your package
lists were updated, indicating new versions of some packages were available.
Some of these packages have then since been updated again since your package
lists were updated, rendering your package lists out of date and causing the
404 errors that you see (because the versions of the packages you are trying
to upgrade to have been superseded).

When I did my daily updates on Intrepid today - all went well, did the
reboot thing... and then I realised my Skype (medibuntu) had
disappeared... like, completely.

"apt-get install skype", and it came back. Got no idea why, but it would
seem something "broke" the package and apt therefore removed it??

(To be fair, I wasn't really reading what was it was updating)

The pleasures of using ALPHA/BETA!!

I upgraded to Intrepid several weeks back, sometime late September -
this was just a standard daily update. So now idea why it went wrong
all of a sudden.

Anyway, I did an apt-get update and then an apt-get dist-upgrade and
it's fine now, it seems.

Will keep an eye on that.

Could it be that a whole load of packages have updated over night in
preparation for the release of Intrepid but not finished copying to all
the mirrors?

Not relating to the errors (since other people have addressed those).

are you upgrading *to* Intrepid, or just keeping an intrepid machine up
to date?

If you're upgrading to Intrepid from Hardy, please don't use
dist-upgrade, it's not the correct way to do it. For a desktop use
"update-manager -c -d", for a server use "do-release-upgrade -d"

I hadn't noticed that, as the first time I got the issue was on update-manager.

Have run it, now wants to download several hundred MBs so might be a
while before I can report back, lol...

Will do so,

Thanks.

I'd suggest it's one of two things:

1) Intrepid hasn't reached your mirror yet.
2) You sources are out of date.

Have you tried running

apt-get update

as suggested? If so, what output do you get?
