[Ubuntu-US-CA] San Diego Ubuntu Hour April 4/19

2011-03-30 Thread Kevin DuBois
Hey all,
This month, the San Diego Ubuntu Hour will be held near the UCSD campus in
La Jolla!
I'm hoping to attract some new faces, so we will be hosting it at
Starbucks, 8657 Villa La Jolla Drive, La
Jollahttp://maps.google.com/maps?f=qsource=s_qhl=engeocode=q=starbucksaq=sll=32.86854,-117.233863sspn=0.012544,0.027874ie=UTF8hq=starbuckshnear=ll=32.864773,-117.231653spn=0.006308,0.013937z=17
on Tuesday, April 19th, 2011, 7-9pm.
As always, rsvp is appreciated:
http://loco.ubuntu.com/events/team/852/detail/

Its within walking distance of UCSD, and it is adjacent to the 5. The La
Jolla Village Shopping Center has plenty of parking, and I-5 should have
drained its rush hour traffic out by 7pm.

I'm printing up fliers to post around the area this week to let people know.
I've also been trying to network with the San Diego LUG, and various other
tech groups I've heard about this month.

Cheers!

We're mixing it up with the San Diego Ubuntu hour this month! Instead
of having Saturday morning coffee like the last few, we'll be having
this Ubuntu hour at a Panera Bread Horton Plaza downtown during the

The March Ubuntu hour will be:
 Tuesday, March 22 @ 7pm
 Panera Bread (Downtown)
225 Broadway, San Diego CA 92101

Horton Plaza is a confusing place. The Panera Bread building is a
free-standing structure from the actual mall, right next to the huge
NBC building. (I'm Ron Burgundy?) It is right next to where they set
up the ice skating rink for Christmas, by the actual Plaza. Panera
Bread has a lot of space and internet access. Come discuss and network
 with other Ubuntu fans!

I know what you're thinking, Downtown?! the traffic! the parking!
 Its ok, calm down :)

 1. Its at Horton Plaza so the parking in the adjoining Horton Plaza
parking structure isfree for 3 hours, when you get your ticket
 validated in the mall.
 2. Its 7pm on a Tuesday, so its not like the Gaslamp Quarter is out in
 full force
 3. Its well past rush hour, traffic should be manageable!

Hope to see you there! Again, please RSVP here:

Re: [Ubuntu-US-CA] San Diego Ubuntu Hour! All Interested San Diegans Ping Me Back!

2010-10-29 Thread Kevin DuBois
Alright everyone, let's just be decisive!

We will meet at:

Starbucks
*1221 Rosecrans* St. San Diego, CA 92106
10:30am Sat 10/30/2010
* Look for the table with the Ubuntu sign, and i'll also be wearing a /white
hoodie with an Ubuntu logo on it/

I'll get there at about 10:00 to stake out a table or two. From the email
chain here, I'm anticipating 4-6 people to show up, so one or two tables
should be good enough.

This location does have wifi, so you can bring a computer if you want. I
don't own a laptop, so I'll probably just hang out there for a while.
There's no real topics for this meeting, just a general meet and greet,
basic organization stuff maybe, a little bit of hacking if you're inclined.
Personally, I'll stay for about 45m-1h, but you're welcome to stay there as
long as you like.

Cheers,
Kevin DuBois

Did we ever come up with a date and time for the San Diego Ubuntu Hour?
 I'm
flying home from UDS on Saturday the 30th however, after that I would love
 to
be a major part of it! There has been some cool ideas down here about
 things
to do at Ubuntu Hour that I will be sharing with the LoCo once I get
everything condensed into a manageable read.

Re: [Ubuntu-US-CA] San Diego Ubuntu Hour! All Interested San Diegans Ping Me Back!

2010-08-18 Thread Kevin DuBois
Hey all,
Nice to get some feedback. I've already heard back from 3 or 4 interested
people.

Never having been to a California Ubuntu Hour before, I'm not sure what they
are typically like. My idea here is to have a meeting, once a month, where
anyone interested in Ubuntu or any of its various subsystems can attend to
see if they can learn more about it. I'm a driver developer by day, so I
tend to see Ubuntu as more of a sum of parts, and would want this meeting to
be open to anyone interested in Ubuntu or its constituent parts.

Some group use scenarios:
1. Fledgling coder comes in for help with getting started with C coding for
oss project
2. Small business owner comes in to talk about whether Ubuntu can be used in
lieu of Windows
3. Coder comes looking for extra manpower to help with his pet Gnome-based
Python project
4. Coder comes in looking to learn how to make debian packages
5. Interested person comes in to learn how to triage through bugs on
Launchpad

Some of the above-mentioned points are directly related to Ubuntu (like #2
or #5), but #1, #3 would help out the greater OSS community, and #4 would
help Ubuntu indirectly via the debian community.

After talking to Flannel (and getting very lost downtown this weekend) I'd
agree that Mission/Fashion Valley would be a good place to hold meetings.
Its somewhat central, plenty of parking, and a lot of freeways lead there.

Suggestions/advice still welcome. I'll attend the next IRC meeting to
advocate this idea further.

Cheers

 Good question Nathan.

Well, the 5 points Kevin listed seem like what I had in mind. #3 and #5
 specifically are Ubuntu focused.

When I started a LUG 8 years ago, I was definitely thinking I would have
this highly technical group where people would be building and
distributing their own signed packages, etc. I am now almost
completely on the side of just have fun, be social, and explore the
Linux system in an intelligent manner. It allows the technical folks
to be technical, and everyone to just be there to learn or socialize...

So, for Ubuntu Hour, I'd probably stick to those lines except have more
of a focus on the Ubuntu specifics rather than general Linux,
Launchpad, important Wikis, etc.I'd actually be fairly open on the
type of content if were all related to Ubuntu.

(not sure if that answered your question)

I still recommend to Kevin to startup a real Ubuntu Hour... :)

No one said make it like BarCamp, they just said BarCamp might be a
good source of interested people for a hacker-friendly event.

What do you think makes a real Ubuntu Hour? I ask because everyone
seems to have their own ideas and I'm always looking to shamelessly
reuse them for the one I have. ;)
