Re: [Ubuntu-US-CA] RMS vs. Amazon search results feature

At the same time I don't agree with all of what RMS said but some of what he says is true for me. http://www.fsf.org/blogs/rms/ubuntu-spyware-what-to-do What do you think? I don't like the idea of money being made by default from Ubuntu for Canonical What is the objection about Canonical making money in Ubuntu given the millions of dollars invested into Ubuntu? My objection to the monetized search feature is that it represents a further shift from the free software being the product and some of the users being the customers toward the other business model where the users' attention is the product and various 3rd parties are the customers - making money in Ubuntu instead of on Ubuntu. I think there are inevitable conflicts of interest down that path, and I'm disappointed to see Canonical going there. The dearth of useful remote scopes installed by default in 12.10 coupled with the fact that the Amazon scope is opt-out instead of opt-in makes it seem as if these conflicts of interest are already in effect. ~leif signature.asc Description: Digital signature -- Ubuntu-us-ca mailing list Ubuntu-us-ca@lists.ubuntu.com Modify settings or unsubscribe at: https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-us-ca

Christian, I'm volunteering my time to promote free software, not a business who bought blank CDs and pizza in exchange for their logo being placed on CD sleeves. Luckily, I don't think we have any *need* to accept donations which would require us to become providers of advertising space in exchange for them, so I don't see why we should. I hope this doesn't discourage your friend from attending! The regular Wed night Linux Discussion meeting last night was fun. Cool, sorry I don't usually make it to that; I should do more often. Maybe I'll see you at five minutes of fame in a couple hours from now? http://5mof.net/archive/2010/05/17/may-2010-schedule/ I've already forwarded this to the Berkeley LUG mail list and will be forwarding to other local lists as well. There are numerous groups that might be interested in participating or who's members might be interested in some hands on help. Thank you for specifying a start time of around 11:00. Any thoughts on a time which people should not arrive after? We should give ourselves some time to finish up and then join the team IRC meeting at 7:00 PM. I intend to stay at noisebridge until around 8:00 or 8:30 depending on how long the meeting runs. I'll stay that long as well, but perhaps we should specify a cutoff time on the wiki for starting on new installs... say, 5pm? Maybe some http://dutycycle.org/ folks can help out with some promotion or at least some recorded music to keep the tradition going from the last few releases. If we have some music files we might be able to put together a package hosted on launchpad.net that people can apt-get install. I know how to make this happen. We already have a netboot server there with a variety of OSes; I'll be adding the beta Lucid desktop image to its menu soon and will update it with the release as soon as it's available. I think this is a great idea, I was down at Noisebridge for an SF-LUG meeting a few weeks back, great space. Do you have some dates you were shooting for? I find installfests a few weeks after release tend to work well since the community tends to shake out the bugs by then so then you either have fixes or documented work-arounds. Plus it gives us time to plan and promote. Jesse is unavailable on the weekend of May 15/16 and Maker Faire is the following weekend, so if we want to do it in May we've got the weekends of May 8/9 (only 1 week after release) or 29/30. Giving heed to the advice above, we should go with the last weekend in May. Any preferences on Saturday vs Sunday? Assuming that one of these days will work, I've taken the liberty of creating a page on the Noisebridge wiki about it: https://www.noisebridge.net/wiki/Lucid_Lynx_Installfest Anyone who wants to volunteer to help, feel free to add your name to that page. Unless there are any objections, I'll tentatively announce this event at the Noisebridge weekly meeting tomorrow night. ~leif -- Ubuntu-us-ca mailing list Ubuntu-us-ca@lists.ubuntu.com Modify settings or unsubscribe at: https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-us-ca
