[Ubuntu-US-CA] Failure attempting upgrade from Ubuntu 13.04 -> 13.10

2013-11-03 Thread Robert Lewis
I attempted to upgrade my tower from 13.04 -> 13.10 via the GUI
and afterwards the command line but no success. My machine
has an SSD for the boot drive and /tmp pointed to real RAM.

The GUI downloads the 2-files in the very beginning and then brings
up some error message.

I include below the output from using a terminal to try and upgrade
in-case something catches a friendly eye with a suggestion.

I can always try backing up the HOME directory and do a fresh install but
was curious
how I can potentially do the upgrade.

Cheers,
Bob

Re: [Ubuntu-US-CA] Fwd: Ubuntu 13.10 (Saucy Salamander) Final Beta released

2013-09-29 Thread Robert Lewis
Hi Grant,

Thanks for your response. I have since located the problem. It has been
with many many cuts of 13.10. The problem is known to the developers
and is related to Intel Graphics chips. Apparently Intel hasn't recut the
driver as yet for 13.10. If I bypass the internal graphics chip on the MBO
and install an Nvidia card all these issues go away for me. It has also
been confirmed by a friend in Vancouver, Washington.

Hopefully, Intel will come through with a fixed driver before the release
date.

Cheers,
Bob

Re: [Ubuntu-US-CA] Fwd: Ubuntu 13.10 (Saucy Salamander) Final Beta released

2013-09-27 Thread Robert Lewis
Anybody try Saucy as yet 13.10.

I have testing it since alpha and at some point the dash became
painfully slow to use. Takes minutes to stabilize and be useful.

Also, shutting down the machine is quite slow.

I just tried the daily build and found the problem still present.

Who else is seeing this? Also, I am testing on a 32-bit machine and haven't
as yet been able to try it on a 64-bit machine to see if the behavior is any
different.

Any comments?

Cheers,
Bob

Re: [Ubuntu-US-CA] Install fests

2013-08-11 Thread Robert Lewis
If the install is going to be on a 32-bit machine (not a 64-bit machine)
you can use Teamviewer remotely to talk her through it.

For example, have her come up on a LiveCD and then have her from
the browser install Teamviewer. You must also install Teamviewer.
Then you will be able to access her machine and annotate the steps
to complete the installing with her remotely over the telephone.

I have done this dozens of times.

Bob

[Ubuntu-US-CA] echo issue on Ubuntu 12.04

2012-08-16 Thread Robert Lewis
Sorry folks I had a brain fade when I wrote this and the issue is on a
newly installed Ubuntu 12.04 DELL machine.

The analogue microphone comes through the speakers. Therefor we are
getting feedback even
with no program using audio running. I have looked around at "Sound
Settings" but don't see anyway to fix
this issue. Of course muting the microphone works or turning down the
speaker volume but that
is a non-solution.

I had these issues occasionally years ago with alsa and knew how to fix it
but not with pulse.

Anyone else had this issue and solved it? Advise, gladly received.

Thanks in advance for your attention.

[Ubuntu-US-CA] bug reporting

2012-07-28 Thread Robert Lewis
I am having a devil of a time reporting an installation bug with 12.10
alpha 3 which really ends up being
an enhancement request. ubuntu-bug won't allow me to do it and so far even
though I have an account on
launchpad I don't see how to do it.

I will describe the bug as I am hopeful that someone else has seen it or
would be willing to try and reproduce it.

During install when you get to the screen to install side-by-side, erase
everything and install on the entire
hard drive or go into custom partitioning. If I go into custom
partitioning and do nothing other than look
at the screens and decide that I don't want to be in this play-ground and
hit the back button.

Then I select the option to allow Ubuntu to utilize the entire disk. When
the installation was done and
requested a reboot I found that Ubuntu would not start up at all. No grub,
no nothing. However, if I put
back in the USB install stick and power up the machine it would then
automatically go to the hard drive
and run the new Ubuntu.

Anyone seen this behavior??? I reinstalled not going to the customized
partitioning screen and
everything is fine now.

Anyone have a USB 3.0 stick and a machine that supports it.

I am curious what kind of speed is reported by running the

On mine a USB 2.0 device reports 480.0 Mb/s which is as expected but

[Ubuntu-US-CA] Help with Software Center and Skype

2012-06-20 Thread Robert Lewis
I am noticing that the Software Center has two entries on my system for
Skype.
They are both identical although different wording. Mine says:
Skype (followed by stars (502))
skype (Notice the lowercase 's' in
Skype.

Then below is another instance that reads:
Skype (followed by stars (502))
Skype Internet Telephony

Skype claims this is a bug in the SoftWare Center but so far I can't figure
out where the entries really are
and what to do about.

If I delete one of these then Skype is gone and I am convinced by clicking
on "More Info"
that they are the same.

Now what I have determined is that this only happens when Ubuntu 12.04 was
not freshly installed
but was done via the upgrade method over the Internet. If one does a
fresh install then the
Software Center does not have the duplication.

Does anyone else see this or have an idea how I can clean it up?

I would prefer to get responses from people who have also seen this and
have found a solution
rather than rampant speculation.

I can send a screen shot to anyone requesting directly to their email
account. I have tried many things
to fix this which include:

http://askubuntu.com/questions/67038/ubuntu-11-10-ubuntu-software-center-gives-me-problem-with-deb

sudo dpkg -i .deb
This will install the package but in case the package depends on any
other package, it will lead to broken package, which you can fix by
opening synaptic and going to edit menu and select "fix broken packages"
and than apply.

Quick and dirty, but works till the fix is available.

To install deb package simply open terminal by "Ctrl+Alt+T" and type
"sudo dpkg -i /deb/destination/package.deb" then "sudo apt-get install -f"
to fix the dependencies.

Re: [Ubuntu-US-CA] Repeating keys kernel bug

2012-05-13 Thread Robert Lewis
I have had a key sticking issue on my HP Laptop for many versions of
Ubuntu. When it happens
the last key pressed starts spewing out the repeated letters across the

hitting another key typically and the I have to erase all the errant extra
characters. I have not figured
out how to fix it as yet. It isn't a horrible bother as it happens rarely

[Ubuntu-US-CA] wireless USB mouse intermittant

2012-05-03 Thread Robert Lewis
Has anyone experienced on 12.04 32-bit a wireless mouse/keyboard not
working on boot intermittently.
Sometimes it works and sometimes does't after a reboot. It's a Logitech
M310 if I recall.

It was working fine on Ubuntu 11.10 and after an online upgrade this
intermittent condition started.
It's happening at a friends house and I am trying to get a clue what is
going on.

The WEB seems to report others having this difficulty but I couldn't find a
LaunchPad bug that matched
closely enough for me to subscribe and follow it.

Any thoughts?

Cheers,
Bob

Re: [Ubuntu-US-CA] Webcam compatibility

2011-10-15 Thread Robert Lewis
I really like the Logitech C910.
Retails for $100.00. Costco had it on sale for $49.99 the last few
weeks but they are running out quick. Plug and play for Linux
and great quality.

Re: [Ubuntu-US-CA] In search of 56k serial modem

2011-09-27 Thread Robert Lewis
I recently found a senior citizen in the same boat who was
on a dial up modem and paying, you won't believe this, $24.95 a month for
access. I have since canceled that service and have
him on DSL for $14.95 a month for a year and he gets 3-Mbs.
After that he goes to $19.95 a month.

Maybe he has a neighbor with wireless and can share that
for free.

Your right, was typing to fast. 11.10 beta 1 with all the current

Yes, an actual install that started with the alpha version and then

[Ubuntu-US-CA] selecting a desktop

2011-09-09 Thread Robert Lewis
I am currently testing Ubuntu beta 1 11.04.
I have several desktops installed which I can choose at login time
by clicking on the arrow at the bottom of the screen before entering my
password.

My question is how can I learn the exact command that is being executed when
I select a desktop from this list? What file has the list and the
commands being
run when I use the mouse / GUI to select the desktop?

Re: [Ubuntu-US-CA] HP LaserJet 2200DN with JetDirect J3113A card

2011-07-01 Thread Robert Lewis
Hi Kevin,

I didn't create a bug because I elected to try and replace
the J3113A with a J4169 that I bought off of EBAY.
This newer card and firmware allowed me to address
the issue with Ubuntu and Firefox which displayed perfectly. The old card
is now gone!

Just wanted to close the loop on this with anyone interested.

Cheers,
Bob

Re: [Ubuntu-US-CA] HP LaserJet 2200DN with JetDirect J3113A card

2011-06-22 Thread Robert Lewis
I did try uninstalling icedtea and downloading the vary latest
SUN Java stuff which ran when I did the java test off of a web
site. However, the problem I presented still persisted.

I have the vary latest firmware for the JetDirect card so that
isn't the answer.

My next test will be to try a newer version Jet direct card as
mentioned in my original email. That is move from a J3113A
which I am using now to hopefully a J41169A.

Why it displays fine on MS Windows 7 and not Linux is still a
mystery to me.

Re: [Ubuntu-US-CA] Slow printing to Laser Printer with Ubuntu

2011-05-19 Thread Robert Lewis
Nice find and I do appreciate your efforts.
I don't have two printer descriptions and I am using
the same driver he describe it appears.

So far the only thing that speeds it up a bit is to select
the Gutenprint driver from the list which reduces the
resolution and darkness of the print a lot but maybe
something I can live with. Time will tell and of course
comments from my wife have heavy weighting as well.

I have removed the threat since to save space as it is
easily pursued through the web site.

Cheers,
Bob

Re: [Ubuntu-US-CA] Slow printing to Laser Printer with Ubuntu

2011-05-19 Thread Robert Lewis
The HP LaserJet printer is maxed out with RAM of 72-MB.
Three of my friends are complaining.
Two are using the parallel port on the computer.
One is connected to a parallel port on the back of a router which
makes it network accessible.
The other person uses a parallel cable to the back of his computer.
However, two others who are having the same issue are using USB
connections. This then would probably eliminate packet size issues.

In addition if I print to the same printer with Windows7 it is fast and that
uses all the same hardware.

Bob

Re: [Ubuntu-US-CA] Slow printing to Laser Printer with Ubuntu

2011-05-19 Thread Robert Lewis
I appreciate the feedback and comments.

I choose a very simple pdf to do timing tests as I didn't want to sit
around for days accumulating the data. Other printing can take an hour
or more to output while the light blinks indicating data is being received.
I will be very happy with the 22-seconds providing others can tolerate
the very light reduced printing quality.

I haven't as yet tried contacting HP but I have contacted the Ubuntu
cups printing team and have not heard back as yet.

HPLIP Toolbox is installed on my machine but it only recognizes and deals
with my HP Photosmart Ink Jet printer where printing quality is good and
fast for same job but costs a lot more to operate.

Re: [Ubuntu-US-CA] Slow printing to Laser Printer with Ubuntu

2011-05-19 Thread Robert Lewis
I have tried all of this on a simple pdf file before and include my timing
figures for reference.   The print is a lot lighter choosing gutenprint but may
be acceptable.  Time will tell.  One issues is that the very slow
printing is the
default for Ubuntu but on Microsoft the default printing has good quality
on Microsoft and fast.   I think this is an excellent work around but that we
still have a problem that needs addressing for most.  All of these were
done with 10.10. However, I tried using the default driver at the top on
11.04 and the number went worse than on 10.10 to 2min 20sec.
Here is my chart:
 SLOW - HP LaserJet 1200 Foomatic/pxlmono [en] (recommended) 1-min 35 sec
TESTING - HP LaserJet 1200 ] Postscript [en] (recommended)  2-min 7 sec

HP LaserJet 1200 Foomatic/lj4dith [en]  1-min 8 sec

[Ubuntu-US-CA] Slow printing to Laser Printer with Ubuntu

2011-05-18 Thread Robert Lewis
I trying to help 3 people with the identical issue. One of them being
myself.
Printing large pdf files and also some web sites is painfully slow to
various brand and model laser printers.
When I try printing from (ugh) windows7 it is fast.

The laser printer LED shows data being spooled to it and lpstat -t shows the
percentage of the job
being spooled (this is slow). When it gets to 100% then the printer does
come on and print as expected.

If I choose to print to an INK Jet color printer then that is fast. It
is only Laser printers the slow behavior.

I have tried with various versions of Ubuntu including 11.04 all with the
same results.

I am not looking for speculation as to how to resolve this but more from
others that have seen this
issue and have found a solution.

Cheers,
Bob

Re: [Ubuntu-US-CA] Ubuntu 10.10 question about the

2010-11-12 Thread Robert Lewis
Thanks Gilbert.

That does indeed work. Now to duplicate the same
with yahoo calendar which a friend uses.

*I would have preferred to decouple this from evolution.*
However, this way works and I am sure adds little to local
storage and will satisfy most users.

Bob

[Ubuntu-US-CA] Ubuntu 10.10 question about the

2010-11-10 Thread Robert Lewis
A friend clicks on the date/time at the top of the Ubuntu screen.
Then he clicks on a specific date which brings up Evolution which he isn't
using.

Question: Does anyway exist to configure this to bring up google calendar
and/or
yahoo calendar?

[Ubuntu-US-CA] Linux rules and probably has gained a new user

2010-10-08 Thread Robert Lewis
I had an old friend call who had his MBR fail so he couldn't boot.
He had no MS floppy and no CD/DVD media for MS to use the
Recovery option. Here is how I fixed it for him. He is in Indiana.

I had him come up on Ubuntu 10.04 Live CD.
I then had him install "teamviewer" which gave me remote access to his
machine even though it was a Live CD. Teamviewer installed into ram.

I then had him use Applications -> Ubuntu Software Center and download
a program called "mbr".I read the destructions and then typed:
install-mbr /dev/sda

and he rebooted and everything worked again.

Re: [Ubuntu-US-CA] "The Ubuntu community cannot, and does not want to, prescribe which formal s tructure its local teams should use”

2010-10-06 Thread Robert Lewis
This group is to inward looking and therefor self serving in my view.
I think we need to focus on the real common goals of helping others
in our efforts to promote Linux within the community.

Re: [Ubuntu-US-CA] Asking For Opinion: Leadership Appointment Process

2010-03-09 Thread Robert Lewis
I would vote to somehow establish framework for what
we are all accomplishing. Sort of a bullet itemized prioritized
list of things the group wishes to get done.

That way whomever is deemed in charge works towards the list
and who's leadership and accomplishments are measured
against a pre-set. That way no one will feel threatened and we
are likely to be able to measure progress over a given time
quantum.

Clearly I would like to see a lot more measurable progress and
a lot less talk.
