I cant thank you enough. I just dont have the funds to buy a new one for
$50, otherwise I would just do it. He is an Ubuntu user for 5 years now (and
seems to be an advocate in his own right) and has had several linux people
drop in to help him and every one is unable to solve his modem problem and
eventually they just disappear. I would love to get him up and running so he
can rave about the Ubuntu community :)

 Thanks! Dave

Re: [Ubuntu-US-CA] In search of 56k serial modem

2011-09-28 Thread Anna
If his budget is that strict... is he paying for phone service? Or is
he getting subsidized phone service as well?

It may be possible to get DSL or a bottom tier cable modem with enough
bandwidth to do VoIP for cheaper, though that can be technically
trickier, and less reliable in emergencies.

Thank you to all who replied. Right now he is paying only $7 a month with
lafn.org, and to save money on dial up there is also socalfree.net which is
free dial up, but I have not tested this service out yet. I did also
recommend getting DSL but the $15/month looks out of this persons budget.

I'd love to give Mikes modem a try. I probably have a power cable at work
some place I could match up to it as well.

 Thx! Dave

Hi Dave,

I use a USRobotics USB modem with Ubuntu. Here's a link for the one I use.
It also doubles as a fax modem.

Re: [Ubuntu-US-CA] In search of 56k serial modem

2011-09-27 Thread James Tatum
If his old one was serial, it should be replaceable via an electronics
surplus store. Weird Stuff in Sunnyvale has USR Couriers (the best
modem ever made) for $10. They sell the same part on eBay for $25 plus
shipping.

Avoid internal and off brand parts as there's some chance it will be a
software modem (aka winmodem). That said, if it's not a winmodem,
Ubuntu will support it since the modem will be based on the highly
standard serial port and the sort-of-standard Hayes AT command set.

Re: [Ubuntu-US-CA] In search of 56k serial modem

2011-09-27 Thread Robert Lewis
I recently found a senior citizen in the same boat who was
on a dial up modem and paying, you won't believe this, $24.95 a month for
access. I have since canceled that service and have
him on DSL for $14.95 a month for a year and he gets 3-Mbs.
After that he goes to $19.95 a month.

Maybe he has a neighbor with wireless and can share that
for free.
