Hope you feel better, Cody. Meanwhile, I'm curious: how many folks, on
average do you find show up at these events you so consistently put on?

Re: [Ubuntu Oregon] 18.04 Release Party

2018-01-29 Thread Walter Lapchynski
I think that's probably about as much as we'd see, yes. I think there's
probably more folks who would come that are in PDX. Maybe if we
circulate this around local meetups and like minded groups, perhaps we
can get a little more draw. But yeah, I can't imagine it being too huge.

Should we take this as just an opportunity to hangout, get swag, etc.,
or should we see this more as an install party, too? If so, will the
venue be able to accommodate that sort of thing (like with all the
electricity, connectivity, etc.)?

In any case, I'm willing to support whatever we can come up with. I just
need some numbers to hand off to Canonical ;)

This reminds me of something I've been meaning to bring up here.
Actually, I think I did once, but it deserves bringing back up. Leo
Arias [suggested][1] doing Ubuntu Hours as Hangouts on Air. I don't
think the first one was public but I think that would be a great idea:
to bring a computer along and broadcast for anyone outside of Salem to
participate in. I know people have problems with Google (I do), but we
could use Matrix and do the same thing. Won't be recorded, but who
cares. It's not like the hours are connected anyways. I mean, jeez, you
can do this stuff on your phone or tablet. At this point it's pretty
darn easy. Whatcha think?

I think it's safe to say that certain projects are pretty much dead.
Just as the Mozilla phone kind of fizzled out, I think Touch is pretty
much dead in the water. That makes Mir kind of useless, too. Which is
good, because all flavors can benefit from Wayland. That's certainly the
blessing we receive here.

That said, Unity itself may live on but so many people don't like it, I
can't imagine it would really go anywhere. Eventually we'll have LXQt
working happily thanks to Lubuntu's help. Upstream's been running it
with Kwin instead of Openbox, so there's certainly a mid-weight desktop
environment possible. Maybe someone should start the Ubuntu Qt flavor?
:)

Re: [Ubuntu Oregon] Linuxfest Northwest April 23 & 24 2016 Bellingham WA

2016-02-11 Thread Walter Lapchynski
I'm not sure if i can make it. work may be an issue for me, too. Meanwhile,
I'd like to make sure we get community donations funding for everyone going
and for a promo pack.

I'll also work on the banner and maybe a tablecloth.

maybe i can get them to cover Ubuntu Oregon flyers, but someone needs to
update at least the website. anyone willing?

generally, Canonical deals in reimbursements, so if anyone knows their
costs for transportation and/or hotels, let me know. make sure to check for
hotel specials with lfnw.

also is ubuntu-pnw a real thing? i thought this was deprecated because of
the CC being unwilling to recognize it. however, i can see a certain
validity to having an avenue for at least Washington and Oregon to cross
talk. the state LoCos should be sub teams of it on launchpad.

Looks like we'll be going. We're just looking at accommodation now, the
Greyhound bus is very reasonable. I'll let you know when we have final
details worked out. I'll also look into bringing some Ubuntu USBs with us.

 Hi Oregubuntarians!

LibreOffice is returning to OSCON this week, and we're looking for a
few more awesome people to help staff our booth.

 WHEN:

 Tuesday, July 21
 5:00PM - 6:00PM (Reception)

 Wednesday, July 22
 10:00AM - 4:30PM
 5:40PM - 7:00PM (Booth Crawl)

 Thursday, July 23
 10:00AM - 5:00PM

 SKILLS:
Experience with LibreOffice and other FOSS products like Ubuntu is a
plus, but a helpful and positive attitude is much more important.

In addition to talking about LibreOffice, we'll be showing-off our
printed user manuals, demoing LibreOffice to interested users, and
 handing out stickers.

Did you know that LibreOffice runs on Android? We currently have a
LibreOffice Viewer, and are currently adding editing capabilities.

 DURATION:
We're pretty flexible -- it'd be great for people to volunteer 3+
hours over the 3 days that the expo hall is open.

 PERKS:
As a member of the booth team you'll get an Official LibreOffice T-shirt.

 CONCLUSION:
If hanging out at a booth and telling everyone about the latest news
about LibreOffice and Free Software sounds like your idea of a good
time, then please ping me back and I'll make sure to get you set up
with a pass, etc. We'd love to have you on board!

your feedback. I want to know what has worked and what hasn't work.
Also, I would like to hear how can they be improved for other LoCo's.

Re: [Ubuntu Oregon] Release party?

2015-04-17 Thread Walter Lapchynski
It would be better for me to do it in the latter part of the month,
and certainly on a weekend. Unfortunately, W-series dates aren't up
yet. Darn you, Whimsical Warlock.

Maybe he can even arrange for a rental to drive folks up?

Sounds to me like some of our key members, who have been great
contributors (U know who UR) are going to be at LFNW, AND due to the short
time frame we'd be facing, not to mention, Canonical requiring several
months notice to approve funding. That said; looks like we'll have to wait
until October to hold a release party, as suggested by Benjamin.

As for location - I'm all for holding it in Salem, however I would ALSO
like to hold it at Mozilla, because I'm a big fan of FF. That is if we can
plan our event (which maybe sometime during first or second week of October)
around Benjamin's schedule. Plus it'll be great to see those members, who
otherwise would have been at LFNW. AND of course we have more time to do
as Walter suggested; we can ABSOLUTELY get a jam pack full of goodies. ;-)
Very nice - much thanks Walter.

I'll be at tomorrow's Salem Ubuntu held at Broadway commons, while there,
Cody and I can check on conference room pricing for October, just in case we
can't get Mozilla. Even though I'm for going to Mozilla or bust... LOL.

Thanks all, for supporting a truly great OS.

 Ciao for now

Re: [Ubuntu Oregon] New Guy

2015-04-09 Thread Walter Lapchynski
Regarding documentation, at least on the wiki, you can get started
right now. Just log in and edit where you see fit. If you wanted to do
something more formal, such as [Ubuntu Manual][1], that's a bit of a
more involved process, but really anyone can branch their code, make
changes, and issue a merge request. Bazaar is a little bit different
than git and Launchpad is certainly different than Github, so the
workflow's a bit different. This should be well described, but let us
know if you have problems.

Regarding bug triage, the [wiki has tons of documentation][2] on that
subject. Join the [Bug Squad on Launchpad][3] as well as their mailing
list. Their IRC channel (#ubuntu-bugs) is helpful, too. There's also a
subset of the team called [Bug Control][4] that has access to change
everything, such as every priority and status. I would read the wiki
as if you were trying to create an application for the Bug Control
team and start making some changes. You can send them to the mailing
list or IRC (or here; there's more than a couple of us here that are
on the team, including Bug Master General Himself, Brian Murray) for
review and feedback.

Once you've contributed some meaningful things and given that you are
committed to making further contributions, we can work on making you
an [Ubuntu Member][5], too!

Re: [Ubuntu Oregon] Hello Everyone

2015-03-12 Thread Walter Lapchynski
Well, welcome to you both! I think you're the first married couple we
have on here? Someone prove me wrong!

I have my suspicions that SteamOS will be pulled into becoming more of
a desktop in the same way that, e.g. the Xbox has. Since it's so
easy to plug a keyboard into thanks to the Linux kernel… ☺

You can find information on membership here:
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Membership

The first step is making a wiki page for yourself. Let me know if you
need help with that or any other step in the process. I would be happy
to facilitate your membership. Ultimately, that is one of our goals as
a LoCo *AHEM NON-MEMBERS* ☺

Regarding the manual, it doesn't seem you're a member of the team or
registered to the list? I'm sure there's more work to do:
https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-manual
Either way, make sure to document and provide links to your
contributions on your wiki!

If you wanted to something else, there's always a need for manual
testing. With KDE 5, LXQt, Unity8, Mir, and systemd all hitting us at
once, there's a lot of work to double check! You can find out about
the subject here:
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/QATeam/Roles/Tester#Manual_Testing
I should also point out each team (e.g. Kubuntu, Lubuntu, Xubuntu,
etc.) has their own team as well.

Regarding in person sort of things, we could always use as much help
as possible at Linux Fest Northwest. The more of us that are there,
the less of time commitment so we can all enjoy the festivities more
together ☺ Even if you don't wish to do that, just meeting in person
is a great way to learn about each other and find new ways to
contribute. So, please come!
http://linuxfestnorthwest.org/2015
OSCON is in the farther future.

As for Eugene, yes, come on down! It's not too far away. There is a
LUG at OSU, which I hope you already know (it's linked off the Eugene
LUG page), but it's nice to hang with your neighbors ☺ You can find
out about us here:
http://euglug.org/
You'll notice we have monthly presentations. You're more than welcome
to do a presentation, as I suggested before. I did one on music in
Linux a while back.

Again, welcome, and stay in touch!

I'm now subscribed and receiving mail from the team. To answer your first

haven't built a Steam Machine yet, however, I did have the privilege of
testing and reviewing a Zareason Zeto that was running the community version
of SteamOS. It was very slick and perfect as a living room device.

SteamOS is really just meant for gaming and entertainment though and really
doesn't work for normal PC use. The exciting thing for the rest of us Linux
users is that we are now getting a ton of games being ported to our platform
that we would never have gotten without the creation of SteamOS and Steam
 Machines.

The last manual version I worked on was for Ubuntu 12.04, I wouldn't mind
helping out with more manuals in the future, I enjoy that kind of work and
being married to an author/editor helps. It might help towards membership
but I'll need to look into that again, I think I've pretty much done
everything except meet someone in person. I signed the code of conduct years
ago when I joined launchpad. It would be great to be an official member, I
 spend enough time promoting it.

I got completely messed up with the timing of Linux Fest Northwest, for some
reason I thought it was later in the summer so because of the timing I doubt
we'll be going but who knows, we're saving like crazy at the moment. If
however, I can help out in anyway don't hesitate to ask.

Testing the various Ubuntu variations in VMs is a lot of fun to me, I am
currently running Ubuntu Mate 15.04 (64Bit) and Xubuntu 15.04 (64Bit) in
virtual box. We have three PCs here running Ubuntu 14.04.2, two of which
have been updated to Linux Kernel 3.16. I'm also running Ubuntu Mate 15.04
(64Bit) on my netbook and it's flying so far.

I've never been to Eugene but we can certainly plan a day trip, especially
if Eugene has some craft beer breweries to visit. It would be awesome to
meet up with some fellow Ubuntu and Linux users in real life for a change
instead of just hangouts and social networks. Corvallis is great, I love it
here, but it's basically just the two of us doing our thing for that past
 couple of years. :-)

I'd say bugs would be a good place for you. You can help with triage
(part of which is confirming the actual bug, which is a form of
testing). Basically they confirm bugs and gather enough information
that they can then be passed onto developers. Often times testing to
figure out the actual problem is involved. Not to mention pulling down
fixes upstream (if you grab the diff, it's very small) and make sure
they actually do what they're supposed to do without regression.

For the most part, bug triage doesn't require so much that it will
kill your desktop. If something happens, it's generally repairable.
Just ask for help.

I do have a spare system, but it's really old (550MHz, 192MB of RAM, 2GB
disk), so not sure if it would even run a current version of Linux.

You MIGHT be able to get away with Lubuntu on it, but I'm thinking
probably not. I've got a Dell I could give you if you're super serious
about it.

They have done this in the past for other domains that get squatted.

Well, I could be wrong, but I don't think they would be willing to pay
for the domain registration or the hosting. I doubt you want to pay
for it Ben ;)

I like the URL as it seems more appropriate. On the other hand, if you
happen to stumble across, say, washington.ubuntu-us.org, you might
wonder if there's an oregon.ubuntu-us.org. The consistency of naming
has a value, I think.

What do you guys think?

Have you gotten access to your router/modem's admin panel? Have you
tried port forwarding? Alternately, run a port scan and see what's
open. If there's something you can live without using (NTP?), have SSH
listen on that port.

no prob! thanks for all your support.

i've been using irc since i was like 13 or so, so if you need any help
with anything, let me know.

we should probably start off with a discussion of clients, since i bet
that's where the problem lies.

also do you know there's a web interface for freenode?

Had some login problems, which I'm 100 percent sure were user errors (LOL),
not as proficient with Freenode, as I'd like.

Will add Freenode as a topic, to this Friday's Salem Ubuntu Hour.

I'll also take a look at Using the Freenode network at:

Thanks again for Approving me, and all your support for the Linux/Ubuntu

Yeah, IRC clients aren't exactly one size fits all, there's ircii for
those wanting to use it from the CLI, there's Quassel for those wanting a QT

i tend to prefer cli ones. irssi or weechat are my go-tos.

again, if help is needed, let me know.

[Ubuntu Oregon] team blog

2014-11-19 Thread Walter Lapchynski
So I was thinking it would be nice to have a blog. Integrating that
into our website is probably a good idea, but regardless, being
included in the Planet Ubuntu¹ feed (and maybe in the LoCo Portal²
feed) would be a good way to get the word out on what we're doing.
Currently, no one really casually runs into us and I think that would
be a good thing to try to have.

I should point out that until I was aware that the team needed a
leader that I didn't even know what LoCos were, let alone that there
was an Oregon team, despite being a contributor for many years. I'm
probably not the only one.

That being said, I've looked into the notion of aggregating our posts
via something like Yahoo Pipes, but I discover now that on Planet
Ubuntu this means it will link to the Pipes feed and can't be
redefined to point at some other site.

So I'm kind of leaning towards the idea that we actually have a blog
blog with various authors who can contribute to it. I guess we get a
Drupal website with the Canonical hosting³. Any Drupal lovers out
there can confirm that we can get a well-formed RSS feed out of it? I
know enough about Drupal to know that we can have a bloggish kind of
thing.

Anyone excited about blogging?

No new news currently. Since we didn't have quorum for the meeting,
this may suggest that people are on extended afk. One of the LoCo
Council members is Lubuntu's Documentation Team Leader, so I've put my
feelers out to him. Will continue to update the team as changes
happen.

btw there is an open seat on the Council if someone wants to join and

Fixed and I'm sure they don't, but it helps. Thanks for the eagle eye!

I should be able to attend. I finally got around to reading the code of
conduct and joining (pending approval) the team on launchpad.

Cool. Approved. Now we just need to make you an Ubuntu Member :)

I'd be glad to help with web programming, if I can get some input on content
(text, images, etc.). However, I'm somewhat of a beginner, so if anyone more
experienced offers to help, they may be more benefit to the team. :)

Well, I think we should make this a team effort. I think we should
start putting a blueprint together. We can brainstorm ideas and put up
design sketches. I know we have several web-savvy folks on the team
and a couple that are great with design. Once I figure out how to make
blueprints…

Thanks. I guess I missed a step somewhere. I'm sure this would be like a
frequently asked question, so if someone could point me in the right
direction, I'll go read the instructions and see what I missed. :)

That's NOT a required component of membership to the LoCo, but it is
ultimately a goal of the community at large, and certainly a part of
what the LoCo should do. Basically membership is a recognition of
continued contribution to the project as a whole. Note that doesn't
mean code, either. More info here:

Figured it out. We now have a project for the website and we have our
first blueprint, to brainstorm ideas:

Re: [Ubuntu Oregon] new logo awaits your approval

2014-11-08 Thread Walter Lapchynski
me:
I have but one request, then, if you are all amenable. That being a version
of this where the Ubuntu logo is inside the state and not eclipsing it:
 https://bazaar.launchpad.net/~ubuntu-us-or/+junk/logos/view/head:/LoCo_logo02-1.svg

jvlb:
It doesn't matter much to me, though the intent was more of a melding than
an eclipsing. The logo without the text hasn't seen much use, so I'm not
sure a new variant would either. There's no reason both versions shouldn't
 be available, though.

Well, I intend to use the non-text logo more. Like on Launchpad. I
will use the current one as is. If there's a different variant, I
certainly would appreciate it. At the very least, without the state
border seemingly cut off by the canvas size.
