FWIW I'd recommend taking a close look at the upcoming Lenovo X1C
Ultrabook. Had I known that was coming out later this month, I would
have held out for it. It's just as light (3 lbs) yet has a 14"
1600x900 matte LCD screen, and a keyboard I expect will be at least as
good as the one on the MBA.

/me drools... thanks for the reco, that's a good looking ultra-book. 14"
is about the minimum i'm willing to go on a laptop since my wife and i
decided to go desktop-free, but from what i'm seeing, this would be well
worth it. ultra bonus points for tpm, fingerprint reader and bios
encryption. this is a perfect example of why Lenovo just surpassed Dell
as the #2 pc retailer. i for one am sick of hp/dell trying to pass
low-quality products in their consumer (home) product lines, and won't
be making another purchase from either until they get this straightened out.

time to start researching hardware components for verified linux
support. does anyone know whether lenovo is willing to buy back unused
windows licenses?

Have we secured the PSU venue? Also is anyone from Debian PDX
Community onboard for this so far? Food/Drinks?

William advised the PSU room is a cinch. Kees & Steve are both onboard,
food/drinks... we can do a BYO or try to get sponsors. I'd be willing to
foot some grub as well.

[Ubuntu Oregon] Ubuntu/Debian Bug Squashing Party

2012-05-14 Thread nathan w

Greetings everyone!

In last night's IRC meeting (full minutes coming tonite), we discussed
early planning for the next Bug Squashing Party. We're currently looking
at either June 16th, or June 23rd, and the event will almost certainly
be held at PSU.

If you have a preference for either of these dates, please respond to
the list (or me if you don't want to write the whole list). On Friday,
May 18, we'll make the call on which date based on your provided feedback.

Thanks!

Nathan and I have been discussing the most cost-effective way of
getting CD's produced with professional results yet at a very low
cost to us since we (those who decide to contribute to the cost)
will have shoulder it.

Does anyone have any feedback or ideas?

Official CDs are available for sale in the Canonical store, at
roughly the
cost of media:

http://shop.canonical.com/product_info.php?products_id=976

Do you think you'll actually be able to do them more cheaply than
that

locally?

It actually would appear Canonical waives shipping price on CD's which
is actually pretty nice... But we are still talking $200+ for 200 CD's
I can get spindles of 100 CD's for like $15-20 and I'm not sure what
labels would cost... The biggest thing I am concerned about is burning
out by CD/DVD drive on my laptop.

As an addendum to the last email: You'd need to look into the support
for LightScribe on Ubuntu. I know it is possible, but the last time I
looked into it, some years ago, it was far from easy.

Thanks for this, I totally forgot I had a LightScribe drive or two and
media for them. I followed the instructions at the following blog and
it was quite easy:

http://www.thepowerbase.com/2011/10/lightscribe-in-linux-make-gorgeous-discs-in-ubuntu/

You don't need to use -force-architecture anymore though!

Now I'm wondering if we can talk jvlb into hacking Ubuntu California's
Origami CD sleeves design with our logo

https://wiki.ubuntu.com/CaliforniaTeam/Projects/CDSleeves

if so we can have maybe nathwill print a bunch and I will begin burning
CD's on Thursday in prep for the release party on Sunday :)

Great question, Ben!

I think we need to work more on pointing people to
the excellent existing resources and introductory
materials that exist. There's a LOT of really good
documentation that's been produced, but newcomers
can have a hard time finding it.

this is our community, we know it very well, and
part of the purpose of a LoCo is to be a signpost
for those just realizing that we exist.

I'd suggest that we focus on the following areas:

- introductory materials (who/what is Ubuntu,
where/how can i get/use it)

- learning more ( software exploration, community
(news, activities, social stuff), documentation )

- dealing with problems (where to get help, how
to ask good questions, how to troubleshoot)

- contributing ( promotion (events), testing,
support (irc/askubuntu), documentation (doc-squad,
wiki, forum, tutorials), ideas (blueprints))

i'm not suggesting that we produce the
documentation, there would be no point, as it
already exists. I do think that providing an index
of the best available resources in each of these
areas would be a great way to attract people to
Ubuntu Oregon, while providing a needed service to
the community.

Hello Everyone,
Just a reminder that Ubuntu Oregon's application for approval is on the Agenda
for the Ubuntu LoCo Council tomorrow at Tuesday 17th January 2012, 20:00
UTC which is Noon our time.

I believe based on discussions that Nathan W will be prepared to represent us
at the meeting tomorrow but I will also be there and per the original
announcement it is important that we have a good turnout of members too.

So if you can spare some time tomorrow and come on IRC please
join #ubuntu-meeting on irc.freenode.net and if you do not have access to a IRC
client feel free to use the Web IRC Client located
here: http://www.ubuntu-oregon.org/chat/ and change the channel to
#ubuntu-meeting

This is an important step for Ubuntu Oregon and although it is not a guaranteed
thing that we will be approved I surely hope we are because it has been long
overdue for Oregon to be approved and had everything been lined up properly in
the past we would have likely already been approved.

If you intend to be present at the meeting please reply to mailing list so I
have an idea of who will be there tomorrow!
