Re: [Ubuntu Oregon] New AMD Ryzen CPUs

2017-03-05 Thread Phil N
Thank you Che for those kind words. It was also a pleasure conversing with
you and Linda as well, and I too look forward to next month. I forgot to
ask - Even-though you are both exceptionally well versed in matters of
science, should Linda require a science advisor for her books as another
view point, I'd be happy to provide research. Plus I'm waiting for
Hollywood to call me should they require someone who looks like an
alchemist... LOL.

Thanks for contributing to Boinc all those years, and your Ubuntu Touch
demo.

Looking forward to meeting up with you and the rest of our LoCo members
next month.

Ciao,
 Phil. N

We had a really good time at today's Ubuntu hour. Good conversation was had
with Phil. We discussed Ubuntu Touch on the Nexus 4, convergence, using
your old hardware with Ubuntu for some number crunching with Boinc and we
finished up the evening talking about A.I. and IoT.

I have to say, Phil, you are one of the most knowledgeable people I've met
and a real pleasure to talk to. We look forward to future discussions with
you and the rest of the LoCo team.

Cheers

Hi Che,
Not sure the dual monitor stands are still there, they were 3 remaining
when I was last there two Fridays ago.
Last price I seen was $15/ea.
Looking forward to seeing ya, let me know what time you'll be at Garten,
and if time permits, we can meet up there like last time. I was planing on
being at Garten around 2:00 to pick up some PSU and HDMI cables, before
they closed at 3:00pm

Ciao for now

Re: [Ubuntu Oregon] New AMD Ryzen CPUs

2017-03-02 Thread Phil N
Yep it would be great to see Ben again, last time we met was back in 2012
during the Ubuntu release party at Puppet Labs. Thanks Ben for putting that
on... I'd be willing to hang out till 8ish if Ben, Thomas, or other people
from out of town wanted to venture over to Broadway Coffeehouse.

As for Garten, Their G.E.A.R.S. Store is open on Fridays, except holidays,
from 11:00am – 3:00pm at
their Recycling Facility located on 3334 Industrial Way NE in Salem. A
great place to pick up a reconditioned Lenovo Laptops, various memory, and
Intel CPUs. Sorry AMD fans, most government agencies purchase Intel stuff.

Also there is Norvac Electronic Parts Store her in Salem, they carry a wide
variety of parts and cabling to fix up or hookup your electronic devices,
along with lots of cool LED strip lighting. Norvac is located at 2110
Commercial St NE, in Salem.

Sorry to sound like an ad campaign, however I'm the Self-appointed
Technology Evangelist in Salem.. LOL..
And, as some of you know, my well laid out plan for technology dominating
Salem is workingLOL.

Ciao for now
Phil. N (Self-appointed Technology Evangelist)

Hi All,

Are you doing weekend meetups at all ever? If the timing were right I might
be able to make it down one weekend to say hi!

Hi Thomas,
I didn't know about it either until Phil introduced us to it a couple of
months back. It's really cool, very good for picking up bit n bobs.

Re: [Ubuntu Oregon] New AMD Ryzen CPUs

2017-03-02 Thread Che Dean
The new AMD chips do look incredible and they should drive the price of the
older FX chips down. The important thing here is that they can compete with
Intel again, we need competition in the market place. I'm actually itching
to start building the new PC, I'll have to check out the condition of the
AMD GPU drivers on Linux but I would love to build an all AMD system again.

I'm looking at building Linda's new PC with AMD. She currently has a Phenom
II 965BE system.

Is there a meeting tomorrow?

Re: [Ubuntu Oregon] New AMD Ryzen CPUs

2017-03-02 Thread Ryein Goddard
That makes sense. I probably don't need to upgrade honestly because I
have 2 systems already, but it is just so cheap. I can build a new one
for less then 1000 bucks and give my old system to my little brother or
something.

I have been keeping to the reddit ama going on. People are talking to
them about Linux related technical issues(coreboot etc..)

https://www.reddit.com/r/Amd/comments/5x4hxu/we_are_amd_creators_of_athlon_radeon_and_other/def5h1b/

I think AMD came back from the brink of death honestly and they need
some monetary support.

Personally I have a 8320 and have been waiting for a new chip
coming out from
AMD. I'm probably gonna get the 1700.

Anyway, haven't seen any benchmarks for Linux though.

To be quite honest, I just bought a new motherboard and a 6300, so I'm not
gonna rush out and make the stuff I bought useless anytime soon, besides,
the Piledriver line is still solid, and you need a 4.10 kernel just to use
SOME of the new features, AMD dropped the ball and didn't give specs to the
kernel devs.
