[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 367275] Re: [i915GM] Binary data added to Xorg.0.log.old and screen stays blank

though.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 376108] Re: [RV250] Very slow performance

2009-05-14 Thread Cima
I was maybe a bit too optimist about the use of XAA. The performance
increase is evident, but it's still a fraction of what it used to be, I
realize after some use. The problem is still particularly evident when,
say, listening to mp3 and browsing with firefox. While before each
scrolling or new page would fill up CPU and cause a lag in mp3
reproduction, now it happens, I would say, around 20% of the times.

Re: [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 339783] Re: Separate X-screen, apps launched from 2nd screen appear on first screen

2009-05-14 Thread Vincent Gerris
Dear Sebastien,

In my opinion, this is not a duplicate?
This bug is about applications not starting on the right screen, the other
is specificly on loading.
Please don't simply try to close off bugs, although I know that is
important.
I do believe the bugs are related, unfortunately Gnome devs are silent.

regards,
Vincent

Status in “gnome-desktop” source package in Ubuntu: New
Status in “gnome-panel” source package in Ubuntu: Invalid
Status in “nvidia-graphics-drivers-180” source package in Ubuntu: New

 Bug description:
My system is using NVidia's separate X-screen instead of TwinView. If I
click Places-Home Folder in the 2nd screen it opens in the first screen.
 This is 100% reproducible.

 Same behaviour observed if running
 DISPLAY=:0.1 nautilus --browser
 or if running from Alt-F2

However, for gnome-terminal, running from the menus opens it in the wrong
 (first) screen, but running
 DISPLAY=:0.1 gnome-terminal
or running from Alt-F2 opens it in the correct (2nd) screen.

Firefox/thunderbird open properly in the 2nd screen in all cases.
Compiz-config settings manager has same behaviour as gnome-terminal. Problem
 seems to be non-app specific.

 http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1089578 shows another user with
the same problem. May be linked to the binary nvidia, am unable to test
without since I'm not aware of any way to get separate X with nv or mesa.

Hi,
I updated the driver to xserver-xorg-video-ati - 1:6.12.2-0ubuntu1~xup~1
(and the other packages) with one of the Ubuntu-X-Swat PPA

The System is still freezing.

For testing I installed Intrepid Ibex Ubuntu parallel to Ubuntu Jaunty,
this installation is running fine, NO freezes.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 322202] Re: [gm45] Session lost on resume from sleep in Jaunty on Lenovo T500

2009-05-14 Thread whtvr
I tried something else and I think I managed to kill two birds with one
stone. I upgraded my kernel to 2.6.30-rc4 (followed this guide:
http://nnutter.com/2009/05/fix-poor-intel-graphics-performance-on-
jaunty/ ) and not only resume from suspend seems to be working fine now
but it looks like the video performance is significantly improved too. I
haven't switched UXA on and compiz and fullscreen HD videos are smooth.
I'm not sure if hibernation works as I don't really use it and didn't
have a chance to test it yet. See also:

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 372556] Re: Recovery start+telinit 5 is the only way to start correctly

2009-05-14 Thread Juan Carlos Rico Gil
I have gathered some data which can be helpfull.

First lspci.txt is the lspci output in this system.
Second xorg.conf is the configuration file for X that is in use.
Third two files output during the 'good' run (telinit 5):
by X, Xorg.0.log
by gdm, gdm:0.log
Forth two same files output during the 'bad' run:
by X, Xorg.0.log.old
by gdm, gdm:0.log.1

As you will see there is no error (EE) lines in the X logs. Everything
seems to work fine, but screen stays black or fuzzy with no cursor.

The driver used is Vesa.

As you asked me I have tried Ubuntu 9.04 but it fails also. Initially
the desktop is drawn correctly, but the cursor is an absurd squared
image broken by transparent vertical lines, much larger than the normal
cursor. And if I click on Firefox icon, than all the screen gets fuzzy
and no way to recover even with Ctrl+Alt+F1.

So I have kept the old version, that I use with my telinit 5 system for
now. All other computers I use have different processors or chipsets. My
feeling is that the Via chipset is not well handled in the normal
startup, but with my trick, it works fine... Why?

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 373440] Re: Kubuntu: KDE 4.2 not properly loading with 2:2.6.3-0ubuntu9.2

2009-05-14 Thread Jan Schneider
Interesting, this indeed seems to be user-specific problem. Logging in with a
fresh user works fine. I already tried disabling all kind of stuff, like things
being loaded through .profile and .bashrc, disabling desktop effects, to no
avail.
Any idea how I can further track down which setting or component may cause this
during the login?
Not sure if that helps, but during the login, the screen goes completely white
for a few seconds.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 375712] Re: [965GM] Native resolution for dell 2005fpw monitor not listed in gnome-display-properties (needs UXA)

2009-05-14 Thread Martin Olsson
@Geir, I have a GM965 laptop here that reproducibly exhibits the exact
same problem together with a Samsung SyncMaster 2253BW LCD panel.

Another more vague clue is that Bryce once asked the question below for another
bug (which was originally what made me want to try UXA on that laptop):

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 352207] Re: [i945gm] UXA failed resume after hibernate (UXA bug)

2009-05-14 Thread Andrew Ivanov
Hi!

Today I came across something that seems interesting to me. After
resuming from hibernation I'm getting blank screen for X. Text mode is
working (I can use CTRL-ALT-F1 and run things on the text terminal), and
I can verify that the programs in my graphical session are working. I
simply can't see them. Just as ari197 wrote in comment 6.

The thing is: even though I cannot see my X session, I can make the
laptop suspend by closing the lid for example. And once I resume from
suspend I can again see the graphical screen. So far I have found no
explanation why suspending with X invisible will result in X visible
after resume.

My video hardware is:
and...@sat11:~$ lspci -nn | grep VGA
00:02.0 VGA compatible controller [0300]: Intel Corporation Mobile 945GM/GMS,
943/940GML Express Integrated Graphics Controller [8086:27a2] (rev 03)

I'm running xserver-xorg-video-intel version 2.7.1 from
http://ppa.launchpad.net/ubuntu-x-swat/x-updates/ubuntu with UXA Accel-
Method. For suspend/hibernate I'm using uswsusp version 0.8-1.1ubuntu3
because of some issues with the default method (overheating, unexpected
poweroffs, etc).

Please let me know if any further information is needed.

I've reported something similar in bug 376485 which I have experienced
after updating from hardy to jaunty since January. Whatever this ticket
is about, I'll keep mine separate at least for now.

1) not related to high load for me
2) mouse continues to work fine here
3) never happened before (I used edgy, feisty, gutsy, hardy without problems)
4) the only keys stuck are Ctrl+1 to Ctrl+4 when switching Workspaces in Gnome

2009-05-14 Thread Martin Olsson
@Juan Carlos. Thanks for attaching the 8.04 log files. It would be
interesting to see what the log files show when you boot 9.04 as well.

Can you please boot the 9.04 live CD and then run the command apport-
collect 372556 in a terminal? This will automatically attach similar
logs for 9.04 to the bug report. After doing that please also manually
attach the output of the dmesg command recorded while running the live
CD (maybe we can find some kernel error in there).

I agree with Nattgew. A noticable difference even when moving windows,
for example. Very snappy without blur... slow and lagging with blur
enabled. Gaussian is slower than bilinear (which doesn't provide much
blur anyway). No garbage.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 363238] Re: [M6-LY] (r100-rv200) very poor Xorg performance - XAA solves this

2009-05-14 Thread JorgeAzevedo
Andrew Janke,

Than for the interest man, I've been experiencing this for ages. Didn't happen
to me in intrepid, only in hardy and now in Jaunty.
Strangely enough, I now can tell that performance has boosted by listening to
to the fan. It jumps to maximum speed and sticks there. Maybe the GPU has some
kind of frequency scaling?

What info do you need for my exact config? I didn't do anything, I'm
running Jaunty installed via wubi and the default config just worked
like this. I will happily provide any logs, outputs or config files, but
I really don't know which ones.

It's weird your xorg.log gives a different output since we have the same
graphics card. I'm not an expert, but if your one says that you have
render acceleration is disabled, your performance should be notebly
afected?

Geir Ove Myhr, I don't think there's a real need for another duplicate.
I'm pretty much sure the bug is not i965 specific, the problem lies
somewhere else. I can second bullinger, my system was hit by the very
same constant unpredictable freezes after upgrade to 9.04. Only
NoAccel true allows to avoid it (the aforementioned exa/uxa
switches, etc. makes no difference here too). And yes, I have VGA
compatible controller: Intel Corporation 82852/855GM Integrated Graphics

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make

bug to them. Please run the command 'apport-collect bug#' which will
include all the info they need for troubleshooting. Thanks in advance.

Hum, the problem has come back, don't know why... The problem seemed to
be systematic before, perhaps it was slightly intermittent, perhaps I
somehow reverted to the old libraries... I'll look into it.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 376030] [NEW] Changing desktop background eats up all available CPU time

2009-05-14 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
You have been subscribed to a public bug:

Binary package hint: gnome-control-center

1. Right click on on the desktop, choose Change Desktop Background
2. Make sure that there are some decently sized background pictures available
for selection. If not, add them from somewhere. I tested this with 1280x1024
jpeg's
3. Click on 3 different wallpapers in sequence
4. Observe how your system becomes totally unusable for about 10 seconds while
the desktop background fades from one picture to another

This also happens when you only switch the background once, but the
above procedure shows the problem more clearly. I understand that the
fading effect might take some CPU time, but surely it should not take
*that* much (tested with Dual Core 2.7 Ghz).

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 261318] Re: Regression: new Toshiba Laptop Support (tlsup) driver breaks Toshiba hotkeys; input device does not support 'kbd' input handler

2009-05-14 Thread ColdFusion
First offI reverted my xorg.conf file back to the defaults after
posting yesterday. That caused an inability to bootnot recoverable
in safe mode (repairing X). So I booted with the live CD and replaced
my xorg.conf file with the backup that was made when I replaced
itsolved the problem. While in the live session, my brightness
hotkeys were working as they had under Hardy/Intrepid. After the live
session I booted as normal and my brightness hotkeys are working again
under Jaunty.

So at least I'm back to normalbut still not happy ;-)

I suppose I should run another live session and see if the seemingly
missing modules are there.

STEVE:
Thanks for the info on the possibility of my install being messed up. I have
no idea how to go about proving it one way or the other. Any ideas?

I can say that all signs point to the upgrade having been
successful...correctly reports as 9.04notification area changes are
seen...perhaps anecdotal tidbits...but there ya go.

DAVE:
Thanks for the fnxfd info...I'll give that a whirlmuch appreciated. I
still wish this kind of messing around to get basic things working was not
necessary.hopefully it gets there soon ;-)

I saw your comment on fresh vs upgrade installs. I sure hope that's not
the case for mebut I fully understand that customizations can cause
problems for upgrades over time ;-)

Thanks All

Ok Martin.

I've tried to use apport to capture a crash report, but it just isn't
happening... What appears to be a crash to me, the instant ending of my
x session on unplugging the tablet isn't appearing as a crash to apport.

I have run lsusb -v and dmesg as you have asked and am uploading the
results.

I'd still be happy to collect more debugging information manually.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 376567] [NEW] After upgrade from 8.10, xserver fails to find a usable screen, no graphic mode.

2009-05-14 Thread blackzafiro
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xorg

I have an ubuntu with KDE desktop too. After an apparently succesfull
upgrade to 9.10, xserver fails to identify my screen mode, using
openchrome (previous versions used VIA). The splash screen appears, but
then it falls back to a text terminal. From the logs I see it somehow
discarded all possible screens, many for unknown causes.

My computer is an Averatec 3200, with AMD Athlon XP-M 2000+, 512 DDR333
RAM, nothing fancy for graphics. Screen resolution 1024x768, horizsync
28-51, vertrefresh 43-60. I tried using these settings in the
configuration file, but they don't make any difference.

If I try to start ubuntu 9 with the previous kernel I get a message
saying there is no theme for 1024x768.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 363900] Re: [i945GM] (Needs UXA) X.org freezes with intel driver, no apparent trigger

2009-05-14 Thread Tina Russell
This looks kind of like bug #367275, which I’ve been struggling with.
Steve, when you had this problem, do you remember if Xorg.0.log.old had
the mimetype application/x-trash? (That would have made it difficult
to open in the text editor or the log viewer, as nothing will recognize
it as a regular text file, even if it has regular text data and will
open fine if you tell the text editor specifically to do so.) That’s
been the symptom for me.

I’ll try some alternate settings, now
