[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 383468] [NEW] xorg segvaulting
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-video-intel Just upgraded to flavor 30 kernels and guess what? xserver-xorg-video- intel gives me pain. As soon as I login X seems to segfault and returns to the login manager. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 383486] [NEW] all displays fail to output applications when virtual is set
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-video-intel Display Preferences application writes the following to xorg.conf when mirror display is disabled: Section Screen Identifier Default Screen Monitor Configured Monitor Device Configured Video Device SubSection Display Virtual 2680 1050 EndSubSection EndSection This combined with the latest xserver-xorg-video-intel causes both displays to activate but no applications are shown on either of the displays. For example, in gdm login the mouse cursor is shown on both screens yet both screens remain otherwise black. (the gdm login screen is not displayed). [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 363533] Re: ATI Radeon HD 3670 Proprietary FGLRX Drivers break Suspend, Hibernate and major performance issues.
I too am having these very problems on this very configuration. When I try to wake up after a suspend or a hibernate, I get stuck at a screen that has the outline of the login window, without any text. I've tried all manner of key combos, and nothing will let me proceed -- I just have to do a hard shutdown and restart. Looking at the pm-suspend log, it claims that all went smoothly in thawing from hibernate. My hardware is the same as above - XPS Studio 1640 with ATI Radeon driver. However, unlike many of the reports above, my proprietary driver has already been disabled, and I still can't wake up after a suspend or hibernate. Any more ideas on what I might be able to do to resolve this? AFAIK, this bug cannot be fully fixed until Intel fixes the problems in their new drivers, the introduction of http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Graphics_Execution_Manager seems to have failed badly. So it's confusing to say that it's fixed in karmic. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 362582] Re: [i830] Installer unable to launch Xorg on Fujitsu Stylistic ST4120PW
I got a mail with a reasonable explanation of the problem, that I'd like to ad to the report: My investigations on the net indicate that the source of the problem is the LVDS (built-in LCD panel) controller of the graphics card. In my case this is a National 2501 chip. It seems that older drivers (i810) have supported it, but the new ones (intel) does not. I don't know why. In some older readmes there are some references to the code supporting this chip, for example here: (http://downloadmirror.intel.com/df-support/9871/ENG/RELNOTES_LINUX5.0.txt - reference to Driver/XFree86-4.2/ns2501.so). I think the theory sounds reasonable. I downloaded Feisty, and checked xorg.conf. It uses i810 driver, not intel. So I guess it was never supported. I've also tried other distributions like Tinyme, so it's not Ubuntu specific. I did try the same thing as the person originally posting the bug, and vesa is not working either. I even tried safe graphics mode with Feisty, that did not work either (feels weird when normal graphics work, safe mode doesn't). However I do have a vague feeling that I've gotten it to work with vesa in some version of puppy linux. Meaning that the vesa problem could be Ubuntu specific. Sadly beeing in the middle of moving houses, I can't get a hold of my linux discs. I also tried booting Slitaz, which worked beautifully. I know I've gotten it to work with Elive. I guess that means support for the chip will have to be programmed for the intel driver, since it never supported it. I hope there is some help to be gained from i810, Elive or Slitaz in programming the intel driver. I don't know if it still should be called a bug, since it's more like adding a feature that was never supported by this driver. It is however a regression for some Ubuntu users if neither support for the chip is added, or the i810 driver is brought back. I know of no way to use the last two Ubuntu releases on my laptop without an external monitor. -- [i830] Installer unable to launch Xorg on Fujitsu Stylistic ST4120PW https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/362582 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to xserver-xorg-video-intel in ubuntu. ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

[Impact] The freeze bug affects a subset of i965 based systems, most particularly those using compiz. Exact numbers cannot be determined, but may be as high as 25-50% based on rough estimates. The problem is severe: An unpredictable lockup of the system that requires a power cycle to recover from. For some users it comes on within minutes, while for others it comes after a few hours of use. [How Addressed in Development Version] For now, the patch being proposed for Jaunty has been uploaded to Karmic. Longer term, we plan to move from EXA to UXA once the latter is stable enough. It has been found that while UXA exhibits other kinds of freezes, we've not yet been able to reproduce this particular freeze there. [Patch for Jaunty] A low-risk workaround that has proven effective at eliminating freezes, or at least greatly reducing their frequency, is to increase the Virtual framebuffer size. Some users do this locally as a matter of course to gain dual-head support, so this setting has received extremely widespread testing already. The patch for Jaunty causes the Virtual size to be set to 2048x2048 if it is not otherwise specified. Users can still override this with their own settings, larger or smaller, as desired. A side effect of this patch is that it also mitigates bug 158415 to a degree, which will make projector usage somewhat easier for this hardware because it will enable X to recognize higher resolutions available from the external monitor than were available on initial boot. [Test Case] The best method found to reproduce the bug is: a. Enable compiz b. Set your desktop to a 6x1 workspace layout c. Run http://launchpadlibrarian.net/25683477/repro.sh d. System will freeze anywhere from 1-20 min typically e. Power-button shutdown is required to reset the system [Regression Potential] In general, Virtual has been widely and extensively tested, so we do not expect this patch to trigger regressions. The patch is coded to only take effect on i965 systems, so the scope of any regression that might conceivably be triggered will be limited to just that hardware. [Suspects] Omitting obviously trivial, unrelated changes, here are what changed in several suspect packages in the timeframe in question: * intel driver: 4/01: 118_drop_legacy3d.patch: Removed Legacy3D 4/03: 114_fix_xv_with_non_gem.patch: Dropped since it caused regression 4/06: 119_drm_bo_unreference_needs_null.patch: Fixes various nullptr derefs 4/08: 120_fix_vt_switch.patch: Fix nullptr deref in video playback * xserver: 4/08: 177_animated_cursor_change_master.patch: fixes animated cursors 4/06: 174_set_bg_pixmap_of_cow_to_none.patch: Sets bg pixmap of composite overlay window to None 3/30: 172_cwgetbackingpicture_nullptr_check.patch: fix race condition when minimzing/maximizing firefox with flash video playing. * mesa: 4/03: 7.4 released * Added MESA_GLX_FORCE_DIRECT env var for Xlib/software driver * GLSL version 1.20 is returnd by the GL_SHADING_LANGUAGE_VERSION query * glGetActiveUniform() returned wrong size for some array types * Fixed some error checking in glUniform() * Fixed a potential glTexImage('proxy target') segfault * Fixed bad reference counting for 1D/2D texture arrays * Fixed VBO + glPush/PopClientAttrib() bug #19835 * Assorted i965 driver bug fixes * Fixed a Windows compilation failure in s_triangle.c * Fixed a GLSL array indexing bug * Fixes for building on Haiku * linux: 4/04: 2.6.28-11.41: Revert MCHBAR patch 4/02: 2.6.28-11.40: Add MCHBAR patch * libdrm: 4/04: 02_libdrm_nouveau_update.patch: Only affects nouveau code 3/29: libdrm-nouveau1.symbols: Probably innocuous [Workarounds] Various people have found one or more of the following have helped to reduce the frequency or eliminate the freezes: * Turn off compiz * AccelMethod UXA * Set NoAccel true *

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 382719] Re: [Q35]: cannot switch to virtual terminals (KMS bug)
Thanks Johan, I've forwarded this bug upstream at https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=22085 - please subscribe to that bug in case upstream needs further information or wishes you to test something. Note that we have a slightly newer snapshot in Karmic right now, although in reviewing its changelog none of the changes look like they would fix this bug. But if you test it and find the issue goes away, that would be good to know. Also, even newer snapshots will appear in xorg-edgers, so if you continue to test that and find the issue goes away with one of the updates let us know so we can resolve this bug report. ** Summary changed: - [KMS][intel 82Q35]: cannot switch to virtual terminals + [Q35]: cannot switch to virtual terminals (KMS bug) ** Bug watch added: freedesktop.org Bugzilla #22085 https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=22085 ** Also affects: xserver-xorg-video-intel via https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=22085 Importance: Unknown Status: Unknown ** Changed in: xserver-xorg-video-intel (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided = High ** Changed in: xserver-xorg-video-intel (Ubuntu) Status: New = Triaged -- [Q35]: cannot switch to virtual terminals (KMS bug) https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/382719 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is the registrant for xf86-video-intel. ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

May I ask you why not? The old driver is already available in jaunty in a PPA; but the point here is to provide a system that works out of the box. I recall everybody that current intel driver is also extremely slow unless you tweak Xorg.conf. Which is not something we expect from the ordinary _ubuntu_ user. It was already unacceptable to have jaunty ship broken. But if in karmic issues are not solved, please, please, rethink the decision of using the new driver. It's just too early. Re: [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 359392] Re: [i965] X freezes starting on April 3rd
How would one reinstall the old driver? I didn't think it was an option. Heck, I'd downgrade back to Intrepid if I there was a way to do it. There should be a downgrade button that's as big and shiny as the Jaunty upgrade button was. (Or maybe the upgrade buttons could just have little warning labels on the side... like cigarettes do.) May I ask you why not? A piece is missing here the whitelist would be created based on user feedback to enable the new driver only for those combinations where it actually works. I said works without any attributes :) V. -- [i965] X freezes starting on April 3rd https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/359392 You received this bug notification because you are a direct subscriber of the bug. * mesa: 4/03: 7.4 released * Added MESA_GLX_FORCE_DIRECT env var for Xlib/software driver * GLSL version 1.20 is

Hi Amit, I've forwarded this bug upstream to https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=22089 - please subscribe to that bug report in case upstream needs more info or wishes you to test something. Thanks ahead of time. This is a weird error, and not consistent with other problems I'm familiar with. Why is it so hung up regarding the framebuffer? Well, a few random ideas... I note you're running with no xorg.conf, and I wonder if you'd get the same problem with the stock xorg.conf (a somewhat different code path in the xserver is exercised when xorg.conf is there, vs. when it is absent). There was also a crash when attempting full screen stuff in the particular -intel version you're running, that is fixed in the 0ubuntu2 version I uploaded a couple hours ago; however your symptom doesn't match what that fix fixed so I would guess it's not going to help, but still would be worth testing just in case. ** Description changed: Binary package hint: xorg I tried enabling KMS on my X60s laptop by creating the appropriate /etc/modprobe.d/i915-kms.conf file. It seems that it doesn't even respond to keyboard input because ctrl+alt+backspace doesn't do anything either (yes I activated this function already). I cannot see anything strange in the log files but I am also not sure what to look for and where but I'd be happy to post if you give me indication on what to check. Regards, Kristofer More stuff: Release Description:Ubuntu jaunty (development branch) Release:9.04 - Update 2009-04-26 I now think I know what causes this problem. I installed from from scratch with the final release of Jaunty and at first it seems the problem had disappeared until I activated the proprietary graphics driver for my ATI card to be able to use desktop effects such as Compiz and AWN. Now the problem has reappeared and it seems it also causes some other problems: - The screen switcher (on the integrated keyboard) button no longer works, without the driver it correctly switches between external/laptop and cloned screens when I press this button. With the driver installed the screen only goes blank for a second before returning in the same mode as previously. - Setting resolution etc. in Display Preferences gets generally unreliable and when I start it with a second screen connected hangs while using ~100% CPU of one core. Without external screen connected (VGA - I havent tried DVI) it works fine to start it and change resolution. - Some times the screen goes blank when games through wine change the resolution. The graphics card is 512MB ATI Radeon HD 3670 and I can't find any more details for the driver except the name in the proprietary drivers app: ATI/AMD proprietary FGLRX graphics driver. If you need any further information, let me know, I just want get this to work as soon as possible... Update 2009-05-21 I have now done some further research and also tested ATI's 9.5 driver from their homepage. It seems that this driver fixes some issues and breaks others. The sleep problem has gone away when using metacity as window manager but is still present with compiz (I cannot be 100% sure I tried this in metacity before although I will likely go back soon and so will check it again). In other words I should probably report this to compiz devs instead. The performance issues (so mild I hardly noticed) seem to have worsened with 9.5 from ATI and my computer even hung twice with a blank screen. Again, seems to be compiz-only issue. What is still a big issue is the multiple screens handling. This behavior is the same in metacity and compiz but is also very different with the 9.5 driver I installed a couple of days ago. The keyboard button to toggle clone desktop/switch to extended desktop now seems to try to do the correct things and at least cloning works. Other settings are very buggy and I am unable to do any changes in the Display application in preferences with multiple screens. Most commands time out saying there was no reply. So it seems this driver is not well supported still... What is most likely to be fixed - support for the ATI proprietary driver that ships with ubuntu or improved support for newer ones such as the 9.5? Next you should probably deny that the Holocaust ever existed. The Internet is full of THOUSANDS of proofs that recent versions of xserver-xorg-video-intel/ is SCREWED. Re: [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 379157] Re: [i945G] Samsung TV not detected on VGA output (no screens)
Just tried Reinhart Tartler 2.4 from ppa and doesn't work either. I attach the log. Good. That was what I expected, since the 2.4.1 from that PPA contains the patch from post-2.4.1. What would be good news, is if we could revert the patch in question from that package and it would then work. From browsing through the logs of the ubuntu -intel packages (linked to from the upstream bug report), it looks like the problematic patch came in through the script that starts with 22- (don't remember the name right now, it is located in debian/patches in the source package). What I'm not sure about is wheather disabling that patch or just changing it is the right thing to do. I will hopefully have time to look at it tomorrow. If you want to give it a try with disabling it, you can do that by commenting it out in the series file in the debian/patches directory (if I remember the file name correctly - it's the only file there which is not a patch). The way to go would be basically the same as when you built 2.7.1. If you don't get the 2.4.1 source package with apt-get source, you may download it (there are 3 files *orig.tar.gz, *.diff.gz and *.dsc) from the PPA page and use dpkg-source -x to unpack it the way apt-get source would do. If these instructions are too vague, you may wait until I have had the time to look closer into it. -- [i945G] Samsung TV not detected on VGA output (no screens) https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/379157 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is the registrant for xf86-video-intel. ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 381960] Re: console freezes when attempting to start second instance of Xserver with UXA enabled
Today I tried xserver-xorg-video-intel v. 2.7.99.1+git20090602.ec2fde7c-0ubuntu1 + libdrm-2.4.11. The situation is a bit better. But really only a bit: after launching the second instance of X the console does not freeze and second instance of X starts, but the screen is whole black with only mouse pointer on it. Apart from this it's fully functional: I can move the mouse and changes shape if you manage to find login window. I can login and it seems it starts whole X session correctly, but the screen is whole black all the time. Also attempt to navigate between virtual consoles with ctrl+alt+Fn usually crashes the first instance. I will attach logs and config in a minute. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 359392] Re: [i965] X freezes starting on April 3rd
We cannot really recommend to people to switch to pre-alpha Karmic, either. I agree, for most users. But then again MOST users should not be running Jaunty. They should be running either Hardy or at most Intrepid. WHAT, you say, but Jaunty is the latest and best and released! So what? We users ARE the testers, and until a number of months of defect fixing follow release, the average user should be staying far from the leading edge. At present, with a 6 months release cycle, users should probably be considering moving to a release around the time its successor is released. Or staying with an LTS, and upgrading when the successor's .1 comes out. Personally, I try to use the latest code as much as possible, since we ARE the testers, but I also have 4 different releases installed at all times. So I have options when something is broken. If you are going to attempt to stay on the edge, you are just plain foolish if you are not using a multi-boot environment. -- [i965] X freezes starting on April 3rd https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/359392 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is the registrant for xf86-video-intel. ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

Re: [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 359392] Re: [i965] X freezes starting on April 3rd
At present, with a 6 months release cycle, users should probably be considering moving to a release around the time its successor is released. Or staying with an LTS, and upgrading when the successor's .1 comes out. By the way, this is what most of people do with Windows. Even more : most of Windows users just stay with their OS until buying a new computer. If we want to look in a very end-user perspective, a computer is only supposed to work with the OS it was shipped with. Dell sold me a computer which is supposed to work with Hardy, and it does work with hardy. The fact to install a Jaunty *is not* an end-user behavior. The first line of the GPL is very clear on that point ;) Laurent -- [i965] X freezes starting on April 3rd https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/359392 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is the registrant for xf86-video-intel. ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp
