[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 383837] Re: crash on workspace change in intel_tex_validate.c:99 assertion

2009-06-05 Thread Martin Pitt
I actually think this is a regression in mesa, which I upgraded from
7.6.0~git20090603.1ad15768-0ubuntu0sarvatt to
7.6.0~git20090603.1ad15768-0ubuntu0sarvatt (xorg-edgers PPA).

The reason I deleted by xorg.conf is that it had a 'Virtual' line in

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 359392] Re: [i965] X freezes starting on April 3rd

2009-06-05 Thread Steve Langasek
No Ubuntu developers are saying that users who want stable systems
should have stayed with intrepid, nor that users who want a fixed system
should upgrade to the karmic alpha. However, Launchpad Bugs is not a
discussion forum, it is a tool for developers and users to communicate
in order to *get bugs fixed*. If you're not prepared to help with this
process by testing (including, if it comes down to it, testing with
karmic alpha packages), that's ok, but then please refrain from
commenting on this bug so that the communication channel can be kept
clear for those who *are* in a position to help get this bug fixed.

As it stands, with 548 comments this bug log is already pretty much
useless for tracking the actual freeze bug in question. One factor here
appears to be that there are a number of different freezes happening,
each with a different cause, but it's very difficult to distinguish
between them because of the nature of the symptom in question.

Some of these freezes are fixed for people using the intel driver from
jaunty-proposed; others require kernel changes which are still in the
process of being prepared for jaunty; others are still present even in
karmic. To be able to make sense of these bugs, we really need everyone
to do the following:

1. File a separate bug report for your issue, and post the bug number here. If
you already filed your own bug and it was marked as a duplicate of this one,
then you don't need to do this again; but please send your follow-up comments
to your individual bug report, so that as we begin to distinguish between these
multiple freeze bugs, your comments stay with the right bug.
2. Follow the directions at
https://edge.launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat/+archive/x-freeze-test/ to capture
the information needed to diagnose your freeze, and send it to the bug report.
Note that you will need to be able to ssh in from another machine in order to
capture this information, so be sure you have openssh-server installed before
trying to reproduce the bug!
3. If the freeze is not reproducible for you after upgrading to the 2.6.30-rc5
kernel needed for capturing the debugging information, please note that in the
bug as well.
4. For *each subsequent freeze on your machine*, repeat step 2. This ensures
that we don't mistakenly end up trying to debug two separate kinds of freezes
on a single machine without realizing it.

Your cooperation here will go a long way towards helping us break this
confused bug down into manageable chunks.

1) Start system: 3 layouts
2) fix layouts with this command

3) press key which generates acpi event (for example, Fn+Volume Up) and get 3rd

past releases is unsupported and not adviced by ubuntu. What you are

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 290727] Re: sisfb is not automatically loaded with a SiS display adapter

2009-06-05 Thread computercolin
This bug also affects Jaunty (9.04). Just did a clean install on my
Averatec C3500 Tablet and the colors very very messed up. Much like the
pictures @brettgraham had. Running xfix from the repair boot option did
not fix the issue. Adding sisfb to /etc/modules did fix the issue
however.

Attached are some details on my display hardware, found using lspci -v

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 290727] Re: sisfb is not automatically loaded with a SiS display adapter

2009-06-05 Thread computercolin
And finally here is my Xorg.0.log when the sisfb module is loaded (I
just added it to /etc/modules).

I did not modify my xorg.conf (it is in fact blank).

I'm not sure where sisfb is supposed to be loaded, but this doesn't seem
like this fix should be too bad. At the worst, couldn't the x-server
package install scripts be modified so that they add sisfb to
/etc/modules if certain sis chipsets are found?

2009-06-05 Thread Bernhard
Of course Ubuntu recommends using jaunty. But the main issue here is
the Intel driver, so you cannot purely blame Ubuntu for this
particular problem. So it may be better to continue this discussion on
the freedesktop forum or send complaint mails to Intel?

I don't want to annoy Intel devs (since we really depend on them now
more than ever), but I wouldn't be surprised if they said: Hey, we
have this new GEM idea, let's first test it with Linux kernels before
we use it on commercial software.

version (don't remember where I found it - it was somewhere in the
ubuntu wiki AFAIR). It didn't change the freezing problem at all
 (made it worse if anything).

So switching back to the old driver isn't really a very helpful
 suggestion...

But to clarify: does plain intrepid work for you? I think there are at
least two different deadlockers in jaunty. I know this because I have a
machine with an ATI and with the intel centrino chipset. It deadlocked a
lot. Upgrading to the karmic kernel fixed this. OTOH, I have a machine
with an intel video card. Downgrading the video driver fixed that. So
are you sure you are experiencing the same bug?

problem was reported as a bug and is being worked on. This is the
proper way to address the issue.

This stable release has been consciously released broken - forget the
deadlock, also extreme slowness with compiz was known since jaunty alpha
1, much earlier than the 3rd of April. The driver should not have landed
beta and should be removed from stable, that's what I am saying.

Of course since I am not an authority I think it is good to ask Bryce
who actually is an authority in Xorg/ubuntu. Maybe there are very good
reasons why we don't want the old driver in ubuntu.

I can say that I have the same situation on my GM45: I used to have both

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 194489] Re: ps2 synaptics touchpad causing huge amounts of wakeups

2009-06-05 Thread Kwinz
Thank you for this clarification.

I am not familiar with the synaptics driver source code or device specs, but I
know that at least with usb mice there is a mouse polling interval. Most so
called gaming mice come with a high polling frequency with 500Hz, while laptop
mice usually have a much lower frequency by default. However I remember you can
override the polling frequency manually at least in Windows. I doubt that
anybody needs such a huge interrupt frequency on a laptop touchpad. Is there
now way to adjust the polling interval in the driver?
If it can't be done in software is it perhaps feasible to contact the laptop
manufacturer for an updated BIOS? (Lenovo in my case) Or is it really hardwired
in the device itself.

I can confirm this bug in Ubuntu 9.04, the problem seems to occur only
when Ubuntu is installed from Windows XP. When booting using the Live CD
this problem does not occur.

The work around by Sebastian Urban, solves the problem with no obvious
side effects:

sudo modprobe -r psmouse
sudo modprobe psmouse proto=imps

I'm using a Philips Freevents X51 laptop, which seems to be quite rare,
since Philips don't officially make laptops.

OK, the envy thing gets it back to where it was in 8.10, one big desktop across
two screens. I don't know that it will survive a reboot because I can't save
the configuration. Of course, Ubuntu can run for months without rebooting.
There is a button to save it, but it won't let you unless you are root, and to
become root you have to call the thing from a terminal with the gksudo
(whatever it is called) command and I don't know what it is called. NVIDIA X
Server Settings is the title bar, but I doubt that is really it. If I try
that I just get this: p...@pete-desktop:~$ gksudo NVIDIA X Server Settings

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 221808] Re: [hardy] NVIDIA driver doesn't work after upgrade from 7.10: invalid EDID checksum

2009-06-05 Thread Ville M. Vainio
I'm commenting to explain my solution for the posteriority:

- It seems that watching a video from tv-out in Windows (dual boot)
screwed up my monitor ( acer al2216w ). I started getting the bad edid
checksum errors from X.

- The problem appeared simultaneously on Ubuntu 9.04 and Debian Lenny
(yes, I have 3 operating systems on my hard drive).

- I solved it by rebooting my monitor - that is I unplugged it for a
while, and reconnected it. This should definitely be tried before any
other tweaks.

- Even without monitor reboot, the windows drivers worked fine; it was
the Ubuntu drivers that required it.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 357982] Re: [GM45] desktop cropped when running compiz (UXA/EXA)

2009-06-05 Thread Jamon Terrell
The reason for this problem is that the Intel GM45 has a maximum 3d
texture size of 2048x2048 (it can't pass either of those barriers... so
for example 2049x1 px is still outside of what it can do).

You can confirm this by running compiz --replace from command line in an
xterm and observing the error message. I'm pretty sure there's no
software fix for this.

Jaunty, nvidia 180.44

I have only scene this bug in Emacs, but it's EXTREMELY annoying -- a
maximize and unmaximize is the quickest way I've found to trigger it. I
also see garbled ness in OpenOffice Writer, but not nearly as bad as
Emacs.

Setting Visual Effects under the Appearance control pane to None
seems to make it go away, until it's set back.

2009-06-05 Thread Rolf Leggewie
I believe the pain is self-inflicted in Ubuntu. The responsible patch
is 104_use_exa.patch. I hope that upstream will help us out of this with
a proper patch that selects EXA by default but drops back to XAA in low-
memory situations.

Stay tuned.

BTW, if there is anybody who can write proper code, can you pleaes take
a look at http://bugs.freedesktop.org/attachment.cgi?id=26476

Thanks for including an image to demonstrate the issue. Could you also
please attach the output of `lspci -vvnn`, and attach your
/var/log/Xorg.0.log or Xorg.0.log.old file from after reproducing this
issue. If you've made any customizations to your /etc/X11/xorg.conf
please attach that as well.

Hi Bryce,

Thanks for the reply. It asked for a short description on my screen.
Had it asked for a title I would have thought of something quite shorter.

I see there is something similar on the wish list for nvidia-settings,
so I guess it is OK for now. Meanwhile, is there a work around?

OK, the envy thing gets it back to where it was in 8.10, one big desktop across
two screens. I don't know that it will survive a reboot because I can't save
the configuration. Of course, Ubuntu can run for months without rebooting.
There is a button to save it, but it won't let you unless you are root, and to
become root you have to call the thing from a terminal with the gksudo
(whatever it is called) command and I don't know what it is called. NVIDIA X
Server Settings is the title bar, but I doubt that is really it. If I try
that I just get this: p...@pete-desktop:~$ gksudo NVIDIA X Server Settings
p...@pete-desktop:~$ It asks for the password in between, but the NVIDIA X
Server Settings doesn't open. The xorg.conf does not reflect what is really
running: Section Screen IdentifierDefault Screen DefaultDepth
24 EndSection Section Module Loadglx Disabledri2
EndSection Section Device IdentifierDefault Device Driver
nvidia EndSection It should have all kinds of stuff in it about the dual
screens, twinview, xinerama and all that.

With flickering black screen, I can do Ctrl-Alt-F1 and log in. Running
ubuntu-bug -p xorg seems to gather a log, however when in text mode it
gives the options of K,S,V, ... to keep the log ubuntu-bug quits and
says Report None. And in fact, directory /var/crash is empty.

I'll attach Xorg.0.log from the failed state.

The server that produced this log file started from mirroring screens.
After I logged in I tried to make them independent which resulted in
black screen with movable mouse pointer. Pressing
ctrl+alt+{backspace,Fn} had no effect. Then I sent SIGTERM to the
server which also didn't have any effect. Then I sent SIGKILL and

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 383167] Re: Video card not detected (loads vesa)

2009-06-05 Thread Geir Ove Myhr
This bug 379504 resurfacing because you are mixing karmic and jaunty
packages. In Jaunty there is a patch (01_gen_pci_ids.diff) that
generates intel.ids in /usr/share/xserver-xorg/pci and a corresponding
patch in xorg-server (143_default_to_vesa.patch) that has the effect of
only looking for these files to determine which driver to use.

In Karmic, as Bryce said 01_gen_pci_ids.diff is removed in xserver-xorg-
video-intel, and because of this, 143_default_to_vesa.patch is disabled
in xorg-server.

Thanks for trying the newer driver and helping to identify problems. In
this case, however, since it is the test case itself that is broken, I'm
closing this bug.
