[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 317658] Re: weird graphics with sis graphics card

2009-06-23 Thread komputes
The problem is not solved as the sis driver does not auto-detect and
correct this by default As well, this does get rid of the color/snow
issue, yet there are still white horizontal lines which show up once in
a while (more frequent when watching video). Marking bug as confirmed as
a fix has not been released. sisfb is only a workaround.

2009-06-23 Thread Savvas Radevic

I'd have to agree with this comment, Ubuntu is (or should be) all
about the human needs, not the "proper" thing to do (which seems to
take enough time to be implemented).

> Hacks are not fixes. Also, is this program even installed by default?
> Paper cuts are only for things installed by default.

I don't know about that, but the papercut specifications include
these: https://launchpad.net/hundredpapercuts
a) - bugs that impact standard workflows (like connecting to the
network, copying files, browsing folders, etc.), rather than
specialised or corner case workflows

It is a standard workflow, people install the nvidia driver all the
time. Even though nvidia-settings is in universe, nvidia-settings _is
suggested_ by System > Preferences > Display: "It appears that your
graphics driver does not support the necessary extensions to use this
tool. Do you want to use your graphics driver vendor's tool instead?"
(which opens up nvidia-settings)

b) - bugs that are easy to address, rather that ones that require
significant design or development efforts

I don't know and probably will not be the judge of this one, but if
the PolicyKit seems hard, there is the alternative issue of applying a
mere workaround for the time being, using gksu in the menu item.

c) - bugs that relate to usability and design (like size of the
notification bubbles), rather than broken software (e.g. notifications
flickering in fullscreen)

It is highly related to usability.

> I would say just making a full GUI app run as root is enough of a bug to
> not implement this 'fix'.

That's a bug *everyone* could live with, until the proper fix comes out.

> You are certainly welcome to advise them of your workaround for this
> bug. I just don't believe such a thing should be added to the package.

I have posted this as a papercut because it just is and there is an
easy solution (at least one of the available ones).

If we implement the gksu usage as an easy temporary solution, people
will have less to think about while fixing up their resolution issues.
This way, the developer would not be rushed into making a fix and
would make a properly defined fix with the PolicyKit patch.

Right now, I see an easy workaround, which you don't want to implement
just because it's not "proper", and a hard one, which will probably
take time to be implemented. It is a papercut issue to me and probably
(IMHO) some other people trying to help out their fellow humans how to
install their driver properly.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 200868] Re: nvidia-settings doesn't have permissions to write xorg.conf

2009-06-23 Thread lewmur
And I say there is a very good reason for doing so. It is the only way
to get dual monitors to work for the average user. The only other way
is to change the ownership of xorg.conf which belongs to root to begin
with. There is NOT a good reason for not allowing nvidia-settings to
run with root privileges

You claim the saving .nvidia-settings-rc with root ownership is a bug.
I say BS. Just what problem does that cause other than raise the blood
pressure of paranoids? I've had dual monitors running this way for
close to two years and have had no problems at all.

Again, if you have a BETTER solution, then implement it. Don't just
talk about it. Otherwise I'll keep advising people to do what works.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 200868] Re: nvidia-settings doesn't have permissions to write xorg.conf

2009-06-23 Thread Travis Watkins
If you run with gksudo you're running a full GUI app as root for no
reason _and_ causing a bug because the .nvidia-settings-rc file will be
saved for the root user instead of for the user running the app so
setting changes they make that _don't_ write to xorg.conf will not be
saved in the correct location.

I would say just making a full GUI app run as root is enough of a bug to
not implement this 'fix'. We're trying to reduce the number of apps that
do such a thing, not increase them.

Calling something that works perfectly well a hack is nonsense. The
perfectionists that keep claiming this have had plenty of time to fix
this in the so called "right way" and it still hasn't been done. It is
totally asinine to let this situation continue for two years when there
is a perfectly simple solution. There is no legitimate reason at all
for not using gksudo. To claim there is a "right way" to do this when
it has been over a year and the so called "right way" is still waiting
implementation, is laughable.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 346028] Re: [ATI driver specific] Ubuntu Jaunty hangs after usplash with fglrx 8.600 or 8.6002

2009-06-23 Thread David Weiss
I had catalyst version 9.5 from the ATI site. I had to download and
compile it because the fglrx from the repository was not up to date when
Jaunty was released. After the update that installed kernel 2.6.28-13 I
lost video. I tried to use the previous fix, removing fglrx and
installing the open source driver, but this did not fix the situation
this time.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 391418] [NEW] [Ubuntu-X-Swat] 945GM Unable to load desktop > 2048x2048 with UXA

2009-06-23 Thread noisymime
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-video-intel

* I am using the Intel drivers from the X Swat PPA *
xserver-xorg-video-intel: 2.7.1
kernel: 2.6.30

I am currently unable to load a desktop with a resolution great than 2048x2048
using UXA. I understand there is a limitation with my hardware (945GM) that
means I cannot use DRI with a resolution greater than this, however with UXA
enabled I cannot get a desktop at all.
Error: (EE) intel(0): Cannot support DRI with frame buffer width > 2048.
and am then given options to reconfigure xorg or start in low graphics mode.

I have tried disabling DRI by adding the following to xorg.conf:
Option "DRI" "off"
However the option seems to be ignored and the same error appears. I can find
no way to disable DRI and therefore get a desktop with UXA.

In the past the Intel driver would simply disable DRI automatically if you
requested a display >2048 however this does now not appear to be the case with
UXA. If I switch back to EXA, the desktop (@ 3072x2048) will load fine. The
extra resolution is enabled with the following in xorg.conf:
SubSection "Display"
Virtual 3072 2048
EndSubSection

If I remove the 2nd monitor and load a 1024x768 desktop with UXA everything
works fine (Performance is great!) but I can find no way at all to get the
larger display with UXA.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 391413] [NEW] [karmic]/proc/acpi/video/VID/DOS is set to 7, breaks suspend

2009-06-23 Thread Bart Kroon
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xserver-common

I run a mostly Jaunty install, but due to memory leaking of the intel driver,
xserver-common xserver-xorg-core and I upgraded those packages to the karmic
versions. After this my laptop wouldn't suspend when I closed the lid (did work
from gui).
After poking around google I came up with the above /proc path, so I went:
cat /proc/acpi/video/VID/DOS
DOS setting: <7>

Some more quick research showed me that this value should be either 1 or 0
depending on whether the hardware or software should determine which display to
resume on (this is only video chip resume) but never 7.
After echoing 0 in there the suspend would run without any trouble as before.

Now I don't know exactly which packet broke this but it must be one of
the xorg related packages since that were the only one's installed this
afternoon. It is not the intel driver from karmic as that was installed
earlier and didn't give me trouble suspending.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 200868] Re: nvidia-settings doesn't have permissions to write xorg.conf

2009-06-23 Thread bajabaq
I disagree that this is not a good papercut - if all that is required is
to append gksudo to the front of the launcher for the nvidia-settings -
then this should be done.

And, yes I have read the above comments (8 etc) about superuser access -
however, I fully agree with what Christian Funder Sommerlund wrote on
2008-10-10 - it would be better not to have it present than present and
broken. Or at least have it throw a warning when it needs to write to
xorg.conf and fails.

This is specifically a problem for dual screens, which as they become
more prevalent this will become a bigger issue.

Not to mention that several other programs under the
System->Administration menu require 'sudo' access, why not have one
more?

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 292636] [NEW] gtk-window-decorator draws titlebar wrong

2009-06-23 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
You have been subscribed to a public bug:

Binary package hint: compiz-gnome

After a fresh installation (also with fresh user directory) of Ubuntu
8.10 and installation of the restricted nvidia drivers compiz got
enabled, and i my window titlebars are drawn incorrectly sometimes. This
happens often, but not always. Entering the titlebar buttons or entering
the titlebar itself with the mouse a few times nearly always triggers
the bug. So it is perfectly reproduceable here. It does not happen with
maximized windows, but does not seem to depend on the window type.
Metacity does not show this behaviour. Perhaps this bug is related to
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/nvidia-graphics-
drivers-177/+bug/186382, though no screenshot submitted there matches
mine. i tried the 177 and 173 nvidia drivers, both show the bug. I do
not have the hardware to test non-nvidia drivers. compiz-gnome is at
version 1:0.7.8-0ubuntu4.

Please have a look at this blog post that describes a Compiz workaround for
this issue:

I have yet to confirm that this solves the problem, since I cannot
positively confirm it immediately (The bug reveales itself arbitrarily).

I hope this can help you in the making of a more permanent solution.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 300935] Re: missing "/etc/X11/rgb.txt" file and broken link to it

2009-06-23 Thread Pablo Di Noto
Using 9.04 with all updates, on i386 and amd64.

I confirm the issue also affects tightvncserver (v1.3.9, there is a
v1.3.10 but it does not seem to include its own /etc/X11/rgb.txt).

This missing file is causing a lot of cascading side effects (like lots
of X apps not working when the X server cannot provide that name to
color mapping). It took me several hours to find the real reason.

Downloading a rgb.txt file as suggested worked as workaround.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 280805] Re: nvidia graphics driver 177.80 on geforce 8400 makes fan spin all the time

2009-06-23 Thread WikiBass
I had the problem described above with 8.10 on my Latitude D630 with
an nVidia Corporation Quadro NVS 135M. The machine started running hot
with the fan coming on loudly.

Upgrading the BIOS to A15 and downgrading the nVidia driver from 177
to 173 fixed the problem. The machine ran quiet and the temperature
was very comfortable.
Upgrading the BIOS only and keeping nVidia driver version 177 did not
solve the issue for me as it looks like it did for some in the posts
above.

When the nVidia version 180 driver came as recommended I upgraded to
this. Everything was still fine. But a few days ago, I fell for the
temptation and upgraded to Ubuntu 9.04. Now the problem with the
machine running hot, and the fan running at high speed is back.

Any ideas on what I could do except trying to downgrade ubuntu?

2009-06-23 Thread Bryce Harrington
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 376092 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/376092

This sounds a lot like bug #376092, which I'm about to upload the patch
for, along with the patch for bug #360319 (another memory leak). I'm
going to dupe this to #376092. (Both of these are actually bugs in the
intel portion of mesa, rather than directly in the -intel DDX driver.)

Regarding a fix for Jaunty, we shipped EXA as the default there, so that
reduces the priority on backports of UXA fixes. I'm also a bit leery of
backporting mesa fixes to Jaunty because we've found the code to be
pretty brittle; several times we backported changes which seemed safe at
first but later were suspected to cause freezes, low perf, etc. on
different hardware, so I'm concerned about the risk of introducing a
regression inadvertently.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 390917] [NEW] LVDS display not returning from dpms off state on intel after a set time period.

2009-06-23 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
You have been subscribed to a public bug:

Binary package hint: acpi-support

When using KMS on intel, the /usr/share/acpi-support/screenblank script
is called on a lid closure event which unconditionally locks in KDE the
screen via this -

elif [ `pidof dcopserver` ]; then
dcop kdesktop KScreensaverIface lock
fi

This has a side effect of causing a unrecoverable hang approximately 1
minute after the lid is closed currently. If you open the lid before
about 45 seconds or so in it will recover fine, but waiting longer will
result in having to reboot. Removing this action from the script makes
it work correctly.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 375609] Re: DDC works wrong with Acer AL1916 monitors

2009-06-23 Thread d4rr3ll
I am having the same problem, as you can see I have successfully run
apport-collect 375609 but this was run from a shell as that's the only
way I can get into the box due to not being able to startx.

Does anyone have a suggested workaround for this, i.e. some way of
bypassing the automatic detection and forcing the system to have the
settings I tell it?

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 391220] [NEW] Intel/X: Session freezes on login with compiz and KMS

2009-06-23 Thread Roland Dreier
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-video-intel

After the recent update on my Lenovo X200 laptop (with GM45 graphics) to
kernel 2.6.30-10, which enables KMS by default, when I log into my gnome
session, things freeze before any panel or other apps open; the pointer
does still move, but ctrl-alt-f1 and other key presses don't work (eg
capslock doesn't toggle the capslock led). If I disable desktop effects
and use metacity, then the session works as normal. Booting 2.6.30-9
with "i915.modeset=1" produces the same behavior.

Unfortunately I don't have an easy way to capture console messages at
the moment but I will try later today.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 112238] Re: mga driver no longer will display 1600x1200

2009-06-23 Thread Tormod Volden
The PPA package is actually for Jaunty, so you can try it out on the
Jaunty Desktop CD. Just log out after installing the package so that X
restarts. Please attach the Xorg.0.log you get in Jaunty.

udev-extras was missing for me too. I remember i also had issues with sound in
gnome also related to permissions.
So it was all related after all.
udev-extras should be a Depends somehow.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 306605] Re: Random artifacting on Jaunty x64

2009-06-23 Thread Peter Verraedt
Downgrading xorg to the version in Intrepid seems to solve the problem, however
it lead's to a high cpu load. This is what I did:
* apt-get remove 'xserver-*'
* Replaced 'jaunty' by 'intrepid' in /etc/apt/sources.list
* apt-get update
* apt-get install 'xserver-*'
* Restored original /etc/apt/sources.list
* apt-get update
* reboot
After the reboot, there were no more artefacts (In fact, I saw artefacts, but
much less). However, xorg used 50% of one cpu core all the time.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 314928] Re: [i915GM] MTRR entry gets removed when restarting xorg - causes corruption on ttys

2009-06-23 Thread Zack Evans
I ran your patched kernel for quite some time and it was perfectly
stable. I moved X on to xorg-edgers version because I was curious about
a few other bugs...

I've just been looking into going back a few versions and doing the
testing as you suggest. However my .28 kernel is now

linux-image-2.6.28-13-generic 2.6.28-13.44

which has come from -updates, and dpkg is therefore moaning about older
versions. So does this already have the patch in, or should I force the
"downgrade" to your kernel for testing, with the hope of turning your
patch into the .45 release?

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 391160] [NEW] wrong resolution at startup

2009-06-23 Thread Bart van Beek
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xorg

When I start my computer my resolution is 1024x768. I can't change this
to a higher resolution, this is the highest option I can select at that
time. As soon as I restart the computer, it goes to 1600x1200, as it
should.

Kubuntu 9.04.
GeForce 9500 GT
NVIDIA drivers 180 installed via hardware drivers applet
Wine 1.1.23

I am having the same problem with 9.10Beta. Also under 9.04 and none of
the patches seemed to work. At the moment I'm dualbooting 8.04 for
dualhead, and 9.04 to test and if I feel the need to work on only 1
screen!!

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 378617] Re: [G45] No DisplayPort support in -intel driver

2009-06-23 Thread Carlos Salazar
Hi Piotr,

i followed all the steps explained at
https://launchpad.net/~morgwai/+archive/intel-displayport and installed
the packages supporting DisplayPort. I still have no success. I
attached my xorg.log, maybe you can give me a hint.

By the way my Intel Chipset is Q45/Q43 and not G45. I use the latest
xserver-xorg-core from Debian Sid.

i hope somebody using the same Chipset was already succesfull.

thanks

Carlos

Re: [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 112238] Re: mga driver no longer will display 1600x1200

2009-06-23 Thread cnobile
I ran Jaunty from the install CD, but did not install it, the best
resolution I could get was 1400x1050, 1600x1200 is not even shown in
the list of possible resolutions. I downloaded the package you
mentioned, but am hesitant to install it as it is for Karmic and I
have Hardy on the box and don't want to upgrade at this time.

If there is an issue with the MGA driver I don't think it is the only
issue since dropping a version of this driver that I know used to work
into /usr/lib/xorg/modules/drivers/ doesn't fix the issues at all. So,
this looks like there is some sort of miss match between the driver
and the X server itself.

Since the bug was filed against 2.6.28-11 and we've gone around it by
going to .30... what we gonna do about a fix for official Jaunty?

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 367377] Re: High load average, disk read, no apparent reason - 2.6.28-11

2009-06-23 Thread Zack Evans
Been looking through changelogs for the version Bob Manners and I have
been going through... I can see there are several memory leaks that
might have been the culprit that have been fixed recently, or that had
been fixed in drivers way in advance of what I was running.

Bob: your bug, but suggest we close this one and if we find more leaks,
open another one?

Nizamov: UXA works reasonably well for me now in Jaunty as long as I use
xorg-edgers stuff - any particular reason you went back to EXA - did you
have other problems?

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 357577] Re: kubuntu unusable with desktop effects - xorg takes 100% cpu

2009-06-23 Thread amichair
Update: Today I tried installing the latest nvidia driver, ver.
185.18.14, straight from nvidia's site
(http://www.nvidia.com/object/unix.html) using the simple guide at
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=990978, since the 185 version
is not available in the Jaunty repositories. The problem seems to be
solved - desktop effects work fine now. Note that the system is fully up
to date, and iirc there have been some xorg related updates since the
original post, so I can't isolate the effects of each update at the
moment. But all together, a fully updated Jaunty with the latest nvidia
drivers fixes the problem.
