The problem is not solved as the sis driver does not auto-detect and correct this by default As well, this does get rid of the color/snow issue, yet there are still white horizontal lines which show up once in a while (more frequent when watching video). Marking bug as confirmed as a fix has not been released. sisfb is only a workaround. ** Changed in: xserver-xorg-video-sis (Ubuntu) Status: Fix Committed => Confirmed -- weird graphics with sis graphics card https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/317658 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to xserver-xorg-video-sis in ubuntu. ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

> Again, if you have a BETTER solution, then implement it. Don't just > talk about it. Otherwise I'll keep advising people to do what works I'd have to agree with this comment, Ubuntu is (or should be) all about the human needs, not the "proper" thing to do (which seems to take enough time to be implemented). > Hacks are not fixes. Also, is this program even installed by default? > Paper cuts are only for things installed by default. I don't know about that, but the papercut specifications include these: https://launchpad.net/hundredpapercuts a) - bugs that impact standard workflows (like connecting to the network, copying files, browsing folders, etc.), rather than specialised or corner case workflows It is a standard workflow, people install the nvidia driver all the time. Even though nvidia-settings is in universe, nvidia-settings _is suggested_ by System > Preferences > Display: "It appears that your graphics driver does not support the necessary extensions to use this tool. Do you want to use your graphics driver vendor's tool instead?" (which opens up nvidia-settings) b) - bugs that are easy to address, rather that ones that require significant design or development efforts I don't know and probably will not be the judge of this one, but if the PolicyKit seems hard, there is the alternative issue of applying a mere workaround for the time being, using gksu in the menu item. c) - bugs that relate to usability and design (like size of the notification bubbles), rather than broken software (e.g. notifications flickering in fullscreen) It is highly related to usability. > I would say just making a full GUI app run as root is enough of a bug to > not implement this 'fix'. That's a bug *everyone* could live with, until the proper fix comes out. > You are certainly welcome to advise them of your workaround for this > bug. I just don't believe such a thing should be added to the package. I have posted this as a papercut because it just is and there is an easy solution (at least one of the available ones). If we implement the gksu usage as an easy temporary solution, people will have less to think about while fixing up their resolution issues. This way, the developer would not be rushed into making a fix and would make a properly defined fix with the PolicyKit patch. Right now, I see an easy workaround, which you don't want to implement just because it's not "proper", and a hard one, which will probably take time to be implemented. It is a papercut issue to me and probably (IMHO) some other people trying to help out their fellow humans how to install their driver properly. -- nvidia-settings doesn't have permissions to write xorg.conf https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/200868 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to nvidia-settings in ubuntu. ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 200868] Re: nvidia-settings doesn't have permissions to write xorg.conf
And I say there is a very good reason for doing so. It is the only way to get dual monitors to work for the average user. The only other way is to change the ownership of xorg.conf which belongs to root to begin with. There is NOT a good reason for not allowing nvidia-settings to run with root privileges You claim the saving .nvidia-settings-rc with root ownership is a bug. I say BS. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 200868] Re: nvidia-settings doesn't have permissions to write xorg.conf
If you run with gksudo you're running a full GUI app as root for no reason _and_ causing a bug because the .nvidia-settings-rc file will be saved for the root user instead of for the user running the app so setting changes they make that _don't_ write to xorg.conf will not be saved in the correct location. I would say just making a full GUI app run as root is enough of a bug to not implement this 'fix'. Calling something that works perfectly well a hack is nonsense. It is totally asinine to let this situation continue for two years when there is a perfectly simple solution. There is no legitimate reason at all for not using gksudo. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 391418] [NEW] [Ubuntu-X-Swat] 945GM Unable to load desktop > 2048x2048 with UXA
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-video-intel * I am using the Intel drivers from the X Swat PPA * xserver-xorg-video-intel: 2.7.1 kernel: 2.6.30 I am currently unable to load a desktop with a resolution great than 2048x2048 using UXA. I understand there is a limitation with my hardware (945GM) that means I cannot use DRI with a resolution greater than this, however with UXA enabled I cannot get a desktop at all. Error: (EE) intel(0): Cannot support DRI with frame buffer width > 2048. and am then given options to reconfigure xorg or start in low graphics mode. I have tried disabling DRI by adding the following to xorg.conf: Option "DRI" "off" However the option seems to be ignored and the same error appears. I can find no way to disable DRI and therefore get a desktop with UXA. In the past the Intel driver would simply disable DRI automatically if you requested a display >2048 however this does now not appear to be the case with UXA. If I switch back to EXA, the desktop (@ 3072x2048) will load fine. The extra resolution is enabled with the following in xorg.conf: SubSection "Display" Virtual 3072 2048 EndSubSection If I remove the 2nd monitor and load a 1024x768 desktop with UXA everything works fine (Performance is great!) but I can find no way at all to get the larger display with UXA. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 391413] [NEW] [karmic]/proc/acpi/video/VID/DOS is set to 7, breaks suspend
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: xserver-common I run a mostly Jaunty install, but due to memory leaking of the intel driver, xserver-common xserver-xorg-core and I upgraded those packages to the karmic versions. After this my laptop wouldn't suspend when I closed the lid (did work from gui). After poking around google I came up with the above /proc path, so I went: cat /proc/acpi/video/VID/DOS DOS setting: <7> Some more quick research showed me that this value should be either 1 or 0 depending on whether the hardware or software should determine which display to resume on (this is only video chip resume) but never 7. After echoing 0 in there the suspend would run without any trouble as before. Now I don't know exactly which packet broke this but it must be one of the xorg related packages since that were the only one's installed this afternoon. It is not the intel driver from karmic as that was installed earlier and didn't give me trouble suspending. uname -r 2.6.30-9-generic xserver version 2:1.6.1.901-2ubuntu1 ** Affects: xorg-server (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New ** Tags: intel suspend xorg -- [karmic]/proc/acpi/video/VID/DOS is set to 7, breaks suspend https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/391413 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to xorg-server in ubuntu. ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp
[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 200868] Re: nvidia-settings doesn't have permissions to write xorg.conf
I disagree that this is not a good papercut - if all that is required is to append gksudo to the front of the launcher for the nvidia-settings - then this should be done. And, yes I have read the above comments (8 etc) about superuser access - however, I fully agree with what Christian Funder Sommerlund wrote on 2008-10-10 - it would be better not to have it present than present and broken. Or at least have it throw a warning when it needs to write to xorg.conf and fails. This is specifically a problem for dual screens, which as they become more prevalent this will become a bigger issue. Not to mention that several other programs under the System->Administration menu require 'sudo' access, why not have one more? -- nvidia-settings doesn't have permissions to write xorg.conf https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/200868 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to nvidia-settings in ubuntu. ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

This happens often, but not always. Entering the titlebar buttons or entering the titlebar itself with the mouse a few times nearly always triggers the bug. So it is perfectly reproduceable here. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 280805] Re: nvidia graphics driver 177.80 on geforce 8400 makes fan spin all the time
I had the problem described above with 8.10 on my Latitude D630 with an nVidia Corporation Quadro NVS 135M. The machine started running hot with the fan coming on loudly. Upgrading the BIOS to A15 and downgrading the nVidia driver from 177 to 173 fixed the problem. The machine ran quiet and the temperature was very comfortable. Upgrading the BIOS only and keeping nVidia driver version 177 did not solve the issue for me as it looks like it did for some in the posts above. When the nVidia version 180 driver came as recommended I upgraded to this. Everything was still fine. But a few days ago, I fell for the temptation and upgraded to Ubuntu 9.04. Now the problem with the machine running hot, and the fan running at high speed is back. *** This bug is a duplicate of bug 376092 *** https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/376092 This sounds a lot like bug #376092, which I'm about to upload the patch for, along with the patch for bug #360319 (another memory leak). I'm going to dupe this to #376092. (Both of these are actually bugs in the intel portion of mesa, rather than directly in the -intel DDX driver.) Regarding a fix for Jaunty, we shipped EXA as the default there, so that reduces the priority on backports of UXA fixes. I'm also a bit leery of backporting mesa fixes to Jaunty because we've found the code to be pretty brittle; several times we backported changes which seemed safe at first but later were suspected to cause freezes, low perf, etc. on different hardware, so I'm concerned about the risk of introducing a regression inadvertently. -- High load average, disk read, no apparent reason - 2.6.28-11 https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/367377 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to xserver-xorg-video-intel in ubuntu. ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 391220] [NEW] Intel/X: Session freezes on login with compiz and KMS
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-video-intel After the recent update on my Lenovo X200 laptop (with GM45 graphics) to kernel 2.6.30-10, which enables KMS by default, when I log into my gnome session, things freeze before any panel or other apps open; the pointer does still move, but ctrl-alt-f1 and other key presses don't work (eg capslock doesn't toggle the capslock led). [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 314928] Re: [i915GM] MTRR entry gets removed when restarting xorg - causes corruption on ttys
I ran your patched kernel for quite some time and it was perfectly stable. I moved X on to xorg-edgers version because I was curious about a few other bugs... I've just been looking into going back a few versions and doing the testing as you suggest. However my .28 kernel is now linux-image-2.6.28-13-generic 2.6.28-13.44 which has come from -updates, and dpkg is therefore moaning about older versions. Re: [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 112238] Re: mga driver no longer will display 1600x1200
I ran Jaunty from the install CD, but did not install it, the best resolution I could get was 1400x1050, 1600x1200 is not even shown in the list of possible resolutions. I downloaded the package you mentioned, but am hesitant to install it as it is for Karmic and I have Hardy on the box and don't want to upgrade at this time. If there is an issue with the MGA driver I don't think it is the only issue since dropping a version of this driver that I know used to work into /usr/lib/xorg/modules/drivers/ doesn't fix the issues at all. So, this looks like there is some sort of miss match between the driver and the X server itself. -Carl On Mon, Jun 22, 2009 at 5:43 PM, Tormod Volden wrote: > There have been a number of fixes to the mga driver since last time we > heard from you. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 357577] Re: kubuntu unusable with desktop effects - xorg takes 100% cpu
Update: Today I tried installing the latest nvidia driver, ver. 185.18.14, straight from nvidia's site (http://www.nvidia.com/object/unix.html) using the simple guide at http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=990978, since the 185 version is not available in the Jaunty repositories. The problem seems to be solved - desktop effects work fine now.
